View Full Version : Extra Tasty CRX: Dyno Disappointment Day

Picked up my 1989 Honda CRX Si in pretty minty condition from a shady local Honda "salesman" in the summer of 03. Yellow wasn't really a color I had wanted at the time, but I love it now.

I never had the money to spend on mods, as the money I didn't put into college went towards camera gear.
I did put a custom exhaust on the car: 2.25 inch piping from the cat back, with a resonator and an N1 style muffler. Always loved how the car sounded, not ricey at all

http://images7.fotki.com/v114/photos/9/96972/1367774/damage-vi.jpg
My suspension gave out on me while I was on the road in early 2005. I'll say this much, do not beat on your car, it WILL break on you.
http://images16.fotki.com/v278/photos/9/96972/1367774/crxedx-vi.jpg
I rang in 2006 with a deer impact, and shortly after, the transmission went.
The engine removal was quite a fun time...

http://www.mikespock.com/chains.jpg
At this point, I wanted to go all out and restore the car to make up for never being able to build it.
I picked up numerous OEM trim parts and other pieces, and ordered a B16 swap.
I started filling and shaving the bay, which turned into a long, drawn out waste of time.
http://www.mikespock.com/bay2.jpg
http://www.mikespock.com/coat3.jpg
I have just primered up the bay, and it will go through winter like this so I can work on areas of the bay whenever necessary. The car should be done sometime in late November.
Mods going on include a JDM B16 with LSD tranny, Koni Yellows and Neuspeed race springs, JK motorsports traction bar, and strut bars for now.

While the CRX was being worked on, I picked up a 1984 Mazda GLC for next to nothing to drive around until the car was done.

1.5 liter engine, 75 horses, 4 speed. It was hella fun to drive around in, until it blew up around 3 weeks later. By some insane chance, I found a professionally built version of the motor for sale on ebay, and another project car developed to steal all my time.
http://www.mikespock.com/gmotor.jpg
http://www.mikespock.com/gmotor3.jpg
^ After polishing it up.
A month later the engine went in, and I've been driving it around open header scaring the hell out of people. If anyone could help me with a custom exhaust, that would be most excellent.

Good luck with the Rex. I remember you trying to sell it a while back, glad to see it still being a project.
CRXed

Yeah, cams as well as some other nice parts. The goal is to focus on the motor build, as I want to eventually stuff the B16 into a mini. Expect the body to go through a drastic change next year. If I had to describe the style..baller rat-rod. When all is said and done, the car should rest in the pages of 0-60 Mag as a featured project car.

Acctually it was 450 in the front and 600 in the rear, I ma using the same setup on my Civic VX right now which is acctua;;y ;ighter then my CRX...It is a little ruff in the VX but with the Konis on Full soft its not to bad at all...I like it on the CRX but the car also had a traction bar and poly mounts so the car was stiff I used the 600 in the rear to help with launching...the car handled amazing but it did have a tendence to want to continue to turn, I'm guessing the softer front would kind of noise dive...
Anyways car is looking really good Mike keep it up! Think I am gonna change up my CRX soon

The car is home.
The noise is still there. It has quieted down a bit and the cams have added a different tone to it. No one has any idea what it could be at the moment.
The motor feels sluggish as hell. Loss of power around 3k. VTEC engages at 4.9k (which was great for the stock b16a cams, prob not for the stage 1's) and the car falls on its face. Power picks up again around 6.8k and the car gets nasty. I've never driven a car that has needed a tune so I can't say if it's that or a mechanical reason.

i only had a lifter tap like that one time, and it went away after like 2 minutes of idling. i don't know what to tell you. I agree with going SC'd. You'll get a ton more low end power. "IMO" i don't care for vtec, i mean, you gotta rev the car out all the time to enjoy it. Its like putting an insanely laggy turbo on a DD...no fun till 5.5 thousand rpms.

Looks good man, I got to see it in the light (as compaired to last night).
You need to paint it (rattle can).. Instead of green like i mention Im thinking a cream color now for ya (coffee with cream picture in satin)... Ill bring the masking tape.
Check out link for the color.. sickest CRX (looks wise) ive ever seen.. sucks teamrice's site not up anymore.

Installed an Innovative traction bar. Feels great compared to my old and ****ty one. Matches the color scheme too, always a plus.
