Well most of you have probably seen my car at the RR meets. It was the red 1997 tuboed Honda Civic. Well the civic finally meet it's demise...I was driving home from the street races last weekend and my inline fuel pump decided to stop working(lose ground wire)So I went lean and toasted the rings and blew the headgasket. So.....I want to sell it and buy an Subaru WRX.
I am looking for some help with deciding if I should buy one. How is the upkeep on an WRX. Is it realiable? What would be some problems I would have if I tracked if often? Any Help would be great.
BTW: Hear is what the Honda heads had to say-

That really sucks to hear that. I seen your car a few times and i really liked it. Good luck on whatever you do next. I think i would rebuild the car and get it running stronger and better. But i dont know how attached you are with it and how much you like WRX's

sorry to hear about your ride... at least its just a d16 and you didn't put up money for a swap.
it's a great time to be in a market for a wrx - you can get one in good condition for around ~15k... definitely look for one that hasn't been modified because even though every one has probably been driven aggressively, modifications cause more engine wear.
i would recommend this classified - http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=89
most of the people selling on there take great care of their cars and are only looking to sell in order to upgrade to a STi/EVO...
if you're in the price range for a STi there's plenty there too... check out this one - http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=767228

Oh yea he definately will be happy with either one. I just wanted to know if he did any research to conclude why the STi is a better choice for his needs over the Evo. Didn't want it to turn into Evo vs. STi

Gee, the Honda guys say to rebuild the motor, go figure.
I say STi. It doesn't have to power potential of the EVO, but has the 6 speed.
You can run 12's with a few basic bolt on's and can drive it year round.
Either way, STi or EVO or WRX, you will be happy with the AWD.

The bad tranny stigma is a myth. If you drive the car like an a$$hole then yes the tranny will die eventually but overall its still decient. Ive been driving on a tranny that was raced hardcore prior to my owning and i havent been easy on it, although i havent beaten on it, and its treated me fine. As pete said, its all in driving style.
I vote for the wrx, you wont be dissapointed with your purchase. Plus, since you are still in high school insurance will be cheaper than for an evo/sti.

Avoid the 2002 WRX, the tranny is junk.
Im on my 2nd tranny and its back at the dealership now with a dumpy transfer case. Even though the dealership called and said they couldnt hear the loud ass clunking noise.

GSXDCY: Everyone and their mom has an Eclipse/Honda too...so just try and be different from the rest and instead of ricing them out tune them and do performance mods. I feel that the Evo/STi have so much potential and the stock platform right off the show room floor is amazing. Now, the dealerships offer turbo kits for 500whp with just a couple bolt ons. If I seriously had the money I would get one or the other, but I want to see how the Evo 9 pans out.

but for how long... not talking about the engine either - i would stay away from both the subaru and mistu 5 speeds unless you are willing to learn before you launch. i've seen so many wrx/evo with blown trannies and transfer cases because their owners don't know how to drive.
didnt mean to make this EVO vs STi, but in my opinion you get more with a subaru...

Hello Pete, I'm Chris. I toasted a trans. But it was only 1/2 my fault.

Sidenote: I just took my WRX back from the service dept at Welsh Subaru. They are complete retards. I thought the last service was bad when they had me pick up my car when they installed the clutch wrong. But now they "couldnt" hear the loud ass metal clunking noise coming from my transfer case during tight, slow turns. I called a buddy of mine that works as a tech at a Philly Subaru dealer and he told me that my first mistake was taking it to Welsh Subaru.
So I told the service manager I was taking my car back and going else where, he sounded relieved.
Helllllllllo SOA!

I have an AWD turbocharged DSM and I actually learned stick on my car. I also learned how to launch and got the car with the ACT 2600 (heavy) clutch. My trans is doing just fine and so is my motor....It's my somewhat daily driver and I beat on it a few times a month at the track/Franklin Mills. During the winter I am guilty of doing doughnuts in the snow and losing my ass end in the rain purposely. I guess I am just lucky....no wait....maybe I just do the proper maintinence on the car and upkeep/tuning so it doesn't have a reason to let go. The person who posted can choose whatever car he likes as long as he likes it. He is going to have to deal with it, not the rest of us.

The EVOs are not a DSM. The 4g has been around so long and gone through so many evolutions, the EVO 4g is a stout motor that you shouldn't have to worry about.

Actually the 2.5 STi motor was created specifically for the US.
The true JDM STi sported the 2.0.

Subaru isn't a prize either. The joke on NASIOC is if you put on new tires it voids your warranty.

Both Subaru and Mitsu are a little reluctant to cover major repairs on these cars due to the amount of owners that beat the living piss out of them. It's hard for them to decide whether a warranty claim is valid or not.
Bottom line is that if you mod your car, be prepared for warranty hell.

I actually know from experience that VW's warranty is pretty good. All the upgrades you can do to the new (A4+) models are pretty much ECU related or cannot be seen visibly. I think the only thing that actually voids the warranty is a cold air intake. I know someone who has the GFB Hybrid 50/50 BOV, FMIC, and it's APR Tuned/chipped. His trans blew up twice already and he has gotten it rebuilt with no problems from the dealership about his mods.

It really depends on the dealer when it comes to warrenty, but SOA is a PITA to deal with. Out here, Rafferty is cool about mods, just don't go nuts. ie- Bigger turbo, nitrous, etc... I think Wilkie in Philly is ok too, but I also know most of the staff by now.
Back to the original question, I say you'd be happy with an STi or Evo. You can have a 6-spd in the Evo MR if you want to pay that much.
To add to the comments/complaints about the 02'/03' WRX I can honestly say the paint is complete crap. If you sneeze on it while waxing your car, you just scratched the paint. Probably voided your warrenty too. 2) dump the RE92s, any tire, even my Blizzaks are better. 3)Up pipes are a pain, the STi doesn't have one. My friends refuse to help me take mine out. 4)The weak Japanese tranny can only hold around 300 before it starts breaking apart. 5) mmm....I can't think of anything else.. Except intakes are useless until you upgrade the turbo.
I say avoid the 02's because it was the 1st year they came out and no one knew how to drive them so that means lots of clutch drops.
