**A little history**
----PICTURES LATER IN THREAD AT POSTS: 17, 22----
In the summer of 2004 I finally decided I couldn't take driving my 'beater' anymore. That beater.... a 1986 Pontiac Grand Am... I know... awesome right? Its ok to hide your jealousy...
Believe it or not it served me well. Was my first car purchased in 1991, wrecked and revived 3 times, and when retired, clocked 150,000. Not bad for a mid 80's GM car. My 'baby' in 2003 was my 2001 WS6 Trans Am. The WS6 was cammed w/headers and other typical bolt ons. It made 365whp/426tq. It was the fastest car I had ever owned...and I had love hate relationship with it... GOD did it rattle....Anyways.. to replace the Grand Am as a DD...I wanted something that was reliable, had a little bit of power, could haul a decent amount of cargo, was on the small side, and AWD. What other choice did I have but Subaru? After looking I found a Black 02 Wagon up at Welsh Subaru. It was auto, which I wanted because I find stick annoying around here with 63,432 stop signs and stop lights. So I bought it and was happy. Well things change. In bringing our first child into the world, we had a few bumps along the way, so I sold the WS6 in the summer of 05. Now I was left with my beloved daily driver, but no "go fast" car. Knowing I couldn't afford a new "go fast toy" right now, I looked at the Wagon and thought... I'll do the next best thing... Sleeper. Soooo as I find my self with the extra cash, I'll put some into the wagon.
I'm happy to say all modifications thus far have been done by me, not a shop. I think it gives a better feeling of satisfaction to turn my own wrenches, rather than just pick out stuff and have someone else put it on. Anyone can pick out parts online and pay someone to install them. Wheres the skill in that?
As of Sept 07....

Had the wagon dyno tuned at Xotic. All it had was the Accessport stage 1 flash. No other mods yet at this point. It put down 184awhp. Not bad for the 2.0 with a slushbox. It left me optimistic for the future additions to the car.
8-8-06
First large upgrades... Maddad steathback, boost & egt gauges.
10-1-06
I purchased the Street Tuner software to allow custom tuning and data logging to the car. I hope to have Andy at Xotic do a custom tune for me shortly. Coming soon will be a brake rotor, stainless lines, and pad upgrade, along with deleting the roof rails. I plan to drive on that till it gets old...then move to either a FP16G or a VF29 with all the supporting mods. I will most likely stop there. My current goal for the car is unlike most people. In the end...its still my daily driver, so I'm not all that interested in peak HP... I'm interested in usable midrange power. I want the wagon to be a car that might catch you with your pants down and surprise you off the line, but not necessarily beat you to the finish...I gotta keep that DD reliability.

Spring is here and so are the changes and additions to the old wagon.
I've been driving on the stealthback for a while now and decided I wanted to hear the sound of the exhaust a little more. After listening to every muffler I could lay my ears on, I finally decided on the tried and true Prodrive. Its deep, and stealthy at idle and normal driving speeds, and when you roll your foot into the throttle, it really growls. So far for spring...
Prodrive axleback
LC-1 Wideband 02
Roof rail delete kit
GTSpec Liberal style grille
GTSpec Mesh Foglight covers
I hope to have some pictures up soon to show off the cosmetic changes. So much for being "stealthy"...haha
Hope to have a dyno tune session and some new numbers shortly.

Nice! The Prodrive axle-back definitely has a great sound, good choice.
The LC-1 and roof rail delete are both on my hopeful summer mod list, too. Are you planning on getting the Innovative gauge, too, or just logging through a laptop? The gauge is really cool.
And let us now how the roof rail delete goes. It's not too expensive but I've never felt inspired enough to drop my headliner and do the install. Your car should look great when it's done.

UPDATE: 4-17-07
Today was my dyno tune session using Cobb's StreetTUNER software. Andy from Verocious did the tune. The graph is below. I'm kinda bummed that I didn't hit my goal of 215, but I'm NOT dissapointed with how it feels. MUCH smoother than the Cobb stage 2 accessport "off the shelf map." Andy worked his magic and got me to 208whp / 202tq. Boost holds strong like a mofo and the car pulls stong through each gear.
I have seen some autos make as much as 220 on the stock turbo, but I'm thinking this could just be differences between dynos. Also, I wanted to stay somewhat conservative on the tune since this is my daily driver. I wasn't interested in trying to squeeze every last HP out of that stock turbo.
GREEN = Accessport "Off The Shelf" Stage1 flash only
BLUE = StreetTUNER "OTS" Stage 2 flash
RED = Verocious Street TUNER Stage 2

I spent a few hours on Saturday installing the last of the upgrades I plan to do for a while.
I scored a genuine v7 JDM STI intercooler from ebay, an APS splitter for the scoop, and a shiny SPT heat sheild. I picked the JDM rather than a USDM because the brackets are correct for the wrx, without the need to modify the throttle body hose. If not, the USDM requires some fabbing of the brackets to get it to fit, plus the JDM is actually a little bit larger than the USDM version, so bonus. The brackets did line up, but my samco Y adapter was too short to make the connection to the turbo. A quick trip to pep-boys and 2.99 later, I had a short 1 7/8" OD coupler ready to extend the lenght of the Y hose.
At first I thought it the damn intercooler wasn't going to fit, but after some pushing and shoving, it finally got in there. I am going to need to put some rubber around the one A/C line because the its rubbing at the rear corner.
The APS splitter is a nice piece and required for a larger TMIC, as it is sized to accomodate the increased size of the IC. Picked it up from Rallisport Direct for a good price. Fitment was perfect and went on as expected.
The SPT was sort of bought on a whim. I decided I wanted something shiny under the hood, and it was cheap so what the hell.
The last and final thing will be a wideband gauge for the Innovate LC-1 i bought for tuning, but I need to figure out how to mount it in the ashtray area. If anyone has any ideas let me know.
I am finished modding for now. I have to put some money into my house or else my wife is going to kill me...

Ugh.. Ok I'm stuck... Looking for some opinions here on where to go next. Soon, i'll be installing my new turbo, a Deadbolt 16g. I then need to make a decision. Make my wagon into a true 'project' and find a daily driver, or discontinue upgrading the wagon and look for an older Impreza to slowly build up as a project.
I always liked the idea of the wagon because its a little different. I mean maybe not so much in the subie community, but its different to an average joe. I like being different. I can think of tons or routes to go with the wagon.... Its a automatic so...I could get a monster autotrans work over from IPT, I been considering an 06/07 STi manual swap into it. I like the idea of doing what TROLL is doing... an entire 07 swap. Its a bummer that people are beating me to ideas i've been thinking about for a while. Trolls conversion and even the route that CarbonIS is taking with his color scheme are things i've been thinking of doing for a while. I LOVE Red on Black. I'd also love to swap something like a 06/07 limited interior into it. Instrument cluster and all. I thought JDM STi Wagon, since they do exist overseas, but I"ve been looking high and low for JDM STi wagon specific parts, and they are hard to come by.
If I did the older Impreza sedan build up, it would definately be a twin scroll set up, or full STi conversion, but it seems like TONS of people are doing RS to STi conversions anymore....ugh...
Suggestions?

ive been having a similar quandry john... its really a tough call... what would you get as a DD? what kind of budget would you be working with? etc etc there are a ton of things to consider... the baby being one huge thing lol...
JET02WRX
08-01-2007, 09:27 PM
Well, if I got a DD, i'd probably just get a used RS Wagon, or a Legacy wagon. Something I can still haul stuff in. I think I am going to keep moving foward with the WRX Wagon as my project for now...adding things here and there slowly progressing towards my vision of how I want the car. There are too many 'unpredictables' in life to try and plan further than that. All I know is, I can't be without a car. So reliability is always in the back of my mind.
Oh and I just caved and bought the EDM headlights... They are shipping from Europe in a couple weeks. Oops...lol

OK... EDM headlights are out, vendor was misinformed and doesn't know when they'll be getting more. Its actually a good thing as it seems like something everyone else is starting to do.
The turbo survived its trip to Deadbolt down in NC. Its being rebuilt, FOR FREE, and recertified in my name for their lifetime rebuilds program. For that part I had to pay a simple $50 inspection fee. FWIW, Jerry Halman at Deadbolt is a top notch guy. He's been responding to all my emails, answering all my questions, and hooking me up with a free rebuild before I'm actually "recertified". I decided to put the money I was going to spend on the headlights to better use... Monster port job on the turbo + coating.... :supz:
Hoping to get all this done over the labor day weekend with Chaos' help, then shortly after get down to Verocious for a tune.
I think i'd finally like to take it to a track and run it down the 1/4 mile for the first time and see how it does. I think the engine is pretty strong. My stage 2 setup put down just a butt hair under 210hp. For a 4eat, I don't think thats too shabby. I'm expecting around 255 after the install and tune. We all know that dyno numbers for an auto never equate to how the do on the track so I'm real curious.

A little update. Turbo is back from Deadbolt. Jerry was nice enough to do a full rebuild on the turbo for me, even though I wasn't the registered owner of the turbo. He provided a full write up of the inspection of the turbo, a few small issues aside, he said it was in good condition. The coating and port job are nice. I'm REALLY itching to get started on installing everything now. DAMN it sucks not having a 3rd car.
Finally took the time today to install my Innovate LC-1 wideband. I've had the thing for ever, but never got around to wiring it up. I also got one of their DB gauges to go with it. Loosely hooked it up after hooking up the LC1, and everything seems to be working correctly. Next step is to get it synched up with the Street Tuner software.
I have no idea where to install the gauge. I don't like the clock pods and already have 2 gauges in the oem style autometer bezel. I think I'll probably end up getting an oil pressure gauge and something else, and use a DIN gauge plate for them plus the w/b gauge.
TROLL
08-18-2007, 10:18 PM
hey i've got one of those DB gauges on the way as well... i decided to try that instead of their xd-16 gauge.
if you're looking for a simple single pod solution, i have a subiegal pod fs... it sits at the corner of the dash and windshield right at the bottom of the drivers side A pillar. i was going to use that but ended up getting another gauge so i found a different solution.

Time for an update on the Sludgebox Sleeper. I spent the long weekend installing the ported 16g, Prodrive BCS, Perrin Inlet, modified injectors and Walbro fuel pump.
As of today, everything is in, just have some finalizations to do.
Random thoughts about the install...
The Green Brackets of Death are called that for a reason... I had to mod a 12mm socket for the passenger side bolt thats hidden behind a vent cover. Even with the cover removed the socket was too long. I tried going in from behind with a box wrench to no avail. I ended up cutting about an 1/8th of an inch off of a socket and that gave me the clearance I needed.
Dropping the turbo onto the oil return line wasn't as bad as its made out to be. That was actually easy once the downpipe was out of the way.
The Prodrive solenoid...ugh..you'd think that for as much as you pay for that it could AT LEAST come with the hoses, adapters, much less the nuts you need to mount the damn thing onto the bracket. I had to go to home depot to get the nuts I needed and to Poopboys to get the vacuum hose.
I don't know if my Perrin inlet was a dud, or if my car is just different from everyone elses but this thing fits HORRIBLY. I got it under the manifold no problem. THAT was the easy part. Trying to get all the hoses reconnected was the annoying part. The vent hose from the intercooler had to be modified because the thing stuck straight up into the air and was hitting the hood when I would try to close it. The maf side of the inlet is rubbing a very sharp piece of the manifold, which no doubt over time will saw a nice sized hole in this thing.
Then trying to squeeze the powersteering hardline back overtop of it has proven damn near impossible. Thats where I quit for tonight. I realized theres a reason the stocker and the Samco one have that flat side on the bend right after the Maf connection...its TO CLEAR THE PS HARDLINE!!! Did they even test fit this thing? Has anyone else had that problem?
Other thoughts...
Rubber stoppers are your friends. I used rubber stoppers to plug up coolant lines so I didn't have to dump my coolant. Only one small spill in the beginning when I was caught off guard, otherwise all the coolant is still intact.
Tomorrow will consist of buttoning everything back up, double checking all my hose connections, flashing my "safety map" , turing the key, and hoping nothing leaks.

Finished up today. Double checked everything again, primed the turbo & injectors, flashed the safe map, pushed it out of the garage, hit the key and it fired right up....and died. Hit it again and smoothed out and idled good! I let it idle for a bit then took it on a slow ride around the neighborhood. Figured out the leaning out issue at idle or coming to a stop using the 'safe' map. Turns out I gave him bad info on the injectors I had. I gave him what I read from the info sheet I got from Troll when I bought them. KG must be a little generous in the flow testing. I told Andy what I read, which was 900cc...unusually high for a modded stock injector. My ignorance on the subject didn't clue me into this. My bad...so... using his judgement, Andy went with a standard scaling for modded injectors. One updated map later....all is good. I was worried I had a vacuum leak that I was going to have to chase down, turns out to just be misinformation.

Well.. just got back from my tune session with Andy at Verocious. Results for my Ported 16g upgrade are: (don't forget its an auto!)
256/231 but removed a few degrees of time so its backed off to 253hp/226tq.
This is with 18psi at peak with virtually no tapering at redline.
You figure an extra 25-30hp if I had a manual, and its pretty much right in line.
I'm very happy. The seat of the pants improvement is huge! You can clearly see from the graph there was NO loss of low end spool. Most likely this is attributed to the upgraded boost control solenoid.
Andy said there was a little left on the table and would have ran more boost, but my stock slushbox is holding me back. Someday, either when it blows up or I get the motivation, i'll send it off to IPT for an overhaul. For now.... weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :supz:

Been a while since I updated this thing. Heres a 'hope to do' list for 2008.
- Exterior Paint care asap! Clawed cats FTMFL
- Ported, Polished, & Coated exhaust mani's. Most likely Crucial Racing since they not only port the opening, but all the way through.
- Grimmspeed Coated crossover pipe.
- New injectors. I'm not happy with my modded stockers.
- Re-dyno tune
- New suspension appropriate for fun daily driving (Coilovers?, Struts?)
- Front & Rear Sways, with new endlinks
- 06 WRX 4pot / 2 pot brake conversion
- New winter wheels to fit the brake upgrade
- Possibly a tranny rebuild... Things are starting to slip....

Were the cats crawling all over the car? Im also interested
in how the brake swap goes, cost and how much effort it is.
The car looks good in the old pictures. Id like to see the scratch marks

One of our cats got into the garage a few weeks ago and I didn't realize it for about 15 minutes. When I went out there... he was on my hood. Now there are some sweet claw marks there.

Whats up with your stock modded injectors?

Even though that they were flow tested... they just havent quite performed well. A about 2 weeks after my tune, everything just started to skew richer and richer. I made adjustments in street tuner, and my WOT runs are pretty spot on...map calls for 10.7 at redline... and i'm seeing 10.9 now. I just can't get things like tip in enrichment, idle, etc.. sorted out. It hesitates on take off and the afr's swing really lean for a second, then come back. Things just aren't consitent.
I've gone over everything back to front and based on some of the weird afr's i get, i'm blaming the injectors at this point. I'm going to pick up some Deuschworks 650cc's and see what happens. If the D-works dont' fix the problem, i'll just sell them. If it does...i'm tossing the modded stockers in the trash.
Its seems from everything i've read about modding the stockers...its either they work awesome, or they work like crap. I think mine maybe on the crap side.
