Update: 3/26/07

The last engine didnt last to long. This past weds. I got a smaller turbo, installed it and went out to tune. Well it didnt go well. Spun a bearing due to oil starvation etc. Friday night from 4pm to 4am myself, bryan (troll), and terry (gottalovethewagon) swapped in a new ej18 engine bought from Area1320. I am currently tuning it very conservatively. I don't need this one to blow up. Putting all efforts to building the JDM ej20g engine and converting my car to run with that.

Update: 3/14/07

http://www.mikespock.com/sd5.jpg

My red impreza is always evolving, usually when doing so I make it faster, this time I made it slower....ooops! The headgaskets that went in last time didnt do the trick, apparantly I warped the heads...who coulda thunk it! So I tore it down again and did it right. JDM wrx headgaskets, arp head studs, jdm wrx heads, sti turbo, etc etc. I am running all of this on a stock ecu with a piggyback so I am having trouble dialing it all in. Right now it runs fine but isnt making the power it can.

New parts that are ON:

ej20g heads
arp head studs
vf39 turbo
tial 38mm wastegate
QTP exhaust cutout
97+ hood (getting it tonight or tomorow)

Update: 12/12/06

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4634803977910542226

So the headgaskets blew on 12/7 after racing MissDSM. On 12/9 I took the engine out and replaced the headgaskets with WRX ones. On 12/11 it started up and ran great. Currently running 13psi, looking to goto 15psi as soon as i get new plugs. Oh I also added sti injectors and took the rrfpr out. SO MUCH BETTER! Driving is soooooooo much smoother now, i officially will never use an rrfpr again after seeing how nice the car drives with bigger injectors and a tune.

Hmm where to start. I tear apart subarus, make them better, and put them back together...its what I do. I started off with a 96 automatic subaru, i made it look all nice and **** but that was when i was a ghey ricer and didnt know anything. Now like I said I tear apart subarus so i sold that heap and bought a 95 obd1 5spd impreza. 2k miles ago i tore out the engine, replaced the heads with larger ones and strapped a turbo kit to it. Suprisingly it runs quite well and is relatively fast considering what it came from.

Stock- 18.xx @ 70mph (just a guess)

Teh dirtified- 13.65 @ 99.31mph

I have some big plans ahead of me. Looking for 400whp ultimately.

I saw your WTB thread on RS25:

Get a spare set of heads for now, like EJ22Es, and then get some EJ22Ts and get em PnP'd and work the heads and rev that thing out.

What is your rev limiter at anyway? How high can the bottom end spin before oil delivery is a problem?

The answer is simple. VTEC. :-p

Word up, that sucks what the next step then.

no, next was the two hours I just spent outside working on a base tune. I figure that before with the old heads the compression ratio wasn't much lower than stock. That being said, my timing advance didnt need to change in my tunes, just the obvious timing retard in boost.

Well now my CR is quite a bit lower than it was before. Stock is 9.5:1 and now I am around 8.5:1 if not lower. That added with the increased distance that the heads sit from the block made for some very bad spool characteristics and some very bad power in boost.

The rough part is that I really have no way to tell how much timing advance I am running. With the piggyback you can only see how much advance or retard you are adding/subtracting....not the overall timing.I am not going to advance at all in boost for now but I may have to in the long run.

Timing is very tricky and can bite you in the ass if you push it too much. While figuring out the timing I am going to make sure the fuel is more than covering any lean conditions caused by too much timing.

Anyone following this....GET STANDALONE! itl make life easier for sure.

Well I went to the track last night and it was very dissapointing. Ran a bunch of 14.XX times with every launch being a bog. New pressure plate and tires make a big difference and it was one I wasn't ready for I guess. My last run started off good, the launch was not a bog but not great but I knew it'd be atleast a 13.9 pass. I was wrong. As soon as i got to the top of 1st the engine started bucking and I knew exactly what was happening. I was pretty much on E as far as gas goes and it was all at the back of the tank while the pump was in the front starving...so that was a 19.xx @ 60 lol.

Fast forward to this morning on the way home from DE, theres a street around my house where I always launch. Well today, being no different than any other day, I wanted to launch there. Mind you this is on brand new Dunlop Direzza's and an ACT stage 2 pressure plate. I revved up to 6, blipped it, layed on it and dropped the clutch. Instantly the front two wheels lit up and the back SLAMMED down hard, it reminded me of the WRX and STi guys who talk about diff slam where it hits the chassis. Thats what it sounded like.

So it was a great launch, I didnt even go into second gear because there was a light ahead of me. Light turns green, I go... "clunk, clunk, clunk".

Results:

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e72/lockenstuff/HPIM1327.jpg

I went home and immediately got under the car to look for a broken axle, didn't find one (was hoping for one, lol) and then knew what was wrong. Drained the diff and these showed up on the plug (magnetic). So:

WTB: 3.9 Ring and pinion gears for M/T impreza.

this car rocks!

Pete I love that anything that breaks on your car can be fixed for the change you find under the seats. That's whats so great about it. It's built from the cheapest subaru parts around. Things are going to break but as long as you can do the labor your self and can source the parts(we all know you can) then it's not a problem. Just get under the seat dig up that change that everyone is leaving behind when you launch and get a new rear. Big deal. Oh and tell your dad I beat the piss out of my car too but it's built from legos like your car. But when it breaks it's gonna cost some coin to get her fixed.

teh DIRT
04-14-2007, 10:44 PM

BUT the rear diff I took out of the car didnt want to cooperate. Its a VA style diff with different side axle holders that need a subaru special tool to be taken out. I dont have the tool and the tool I MADE didnt do the trick. So I need a whole diff, housing and all.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e72/lockenstuff/boostslugs.jpg

That will look perfect. You don't really gotta photoshop it though, just peek at my rims. I definately think you should do them gold and get red lugs.

Overall they fit awesome. With the fenders rolled you will be more than fine, although there isn't enough camber for my taste. They still look good either way.

teh DIRT
06-01-2007, 06:35 PM
I cant add any camber, there is NO ROOM between the wheel and the strut in the rear.

subwrxkid
06-01-2007, 06:47 PM
oh wow. So, it's almost hitting? When the rear hits a bump they may rub a little.

Hmm...

You won't settle for those wheels with a one size down tire? You may be just fine, but you won't know until you drive it really hard.

+1 for being inovative atleast.

TROLL
06-01-2007, 06:52 PM
if you dont need to add crazy camber i wouldnt, but if you needed a solution, camber plates would shift the strut and wheel inward together, so wheel/tire clearance on the strut would stay the same while buying yourself some more clearance with the fender. rear camber plates are mad loot though and i dont think you're going to go that out of your way to get a set of wheels to fit. camber bolts would keep the strut angle the same and move the wheel independently of it, which it sounds like you cant do.
if you wanted some 215 or 225 would buy you a tiny bit of clearance, but not 10mm or 20mm respectively, the actual section width difference will be smaller because they are all going onto the same width wheel. so figure maybe 6mm (3mm each side) by going to a 225mm or maybe 12mm (6mm each side) by going to a 215 tire.
anywho, this is all getting ahead of ourselves. i think it'll fit wonderfully with just a rear fender roll :)

Shawn@R/Ttuning
06-01-2007, 07:02 PM

i think they look awesome, i was just saying that they're a +48 and a wheel that you commonly find on subarus, just not on L's cause their fenders generally cant accomodate this kind of width (wheel and tire combo).
if you can drive the piss out of your car without rubbing, then they're amazing. if you have to drive like a little girl around town all the time, meh.

If we all had 5x114.3 we could have rims that fit our cars. Until we do a hub swap like bryan, we can't have the 18x9.5 +35's. It's not our fault! Most of us have to custom order our rims just so they are wide and fit the car right.

not under any circumstance that I would encounter while driving normal or driving hard. I took it to a parking lot and did some VERY hard circles back and forth and only then did it rub a little.
