After totalling my beloved 96 Mazda MX-6 in April of 2006, I was on a search to find my perfect daily driver. I've loved the STi ever since I saw the 04-05 body style but I always thought it was out of my price range. After basically getting to a point in my life where i had to decide to either move out of my parents house or buy a new car, i decided to find my perfect STi... i had searched around for months for a black one with gold wheels... but i couldnt find one that wasnt over priced or beat to hell and back... then one saturday morning i stumbled upon this CGM STi at Welsh Subaru in Limerick. I made a call as soon as i saw the car... something struck me that said i needed to drive this car... so i went up later that day... only to find out that i was the first of about 5 calls about the car. It was pouring rain but i drove the car anyway and fell in love... it wasnt my first choice but it had low miles 7009 to be exact, and it was extremely clean minus the water spots that are still on the car. (i think its because there is a nuclear power plant in Limerick and the acid rain got to the paint before i did haha.) Either way i fell in love and drive the car every day. I wanted something that was fast, reliable, and was able to handle any kind of weather, and ive found it.

thats crank horsepower man.... its 254 horsepower at the wheels... there is a large amount of drivetrain loss with all wheel drive... and i dyno'd on a dyno that normally reads a bit low.

And to no offense to anybody here, but I think dynoing a stock car is throwing money away these days. You can search the net for hundreds of stock dyno sheets for about any car. Your car will be within 5hp of the mean with how well (repeatable) they build engines now. Save your $70 for after you mod to really see how much HP you have.

I understand the need for a baseline, but it's hard to go against a mountain of data.

Jon as always... I'm jealous of your car....

As far as dynoing a stock car goes... imho I agree it makes no sense if you don't plan on doing any modifications. If you do plan on upgrading...then for some, its a must in order to truely see gains that pertain to your car and your and your car alone. I dyno'ed my WS6 when it was stock. I made 15 HP more than most other stock graphs I had seen. Jons car actually dynoed almost 10hp higher than most stock STI graphs I've seen as well. Everyone i've come across has put down around 245whp...but everyone likes to spend their cash in different ways...

if you understand the need for a baseline, then what you said kinda negates itself. i dyno'd my stock car because i wanted to see what my car specifically put down. i knew about what kind of power it should make, but no specifics, hence the dyno. i feel like my money was well spent and i was pleased with the results.

Those are sweet stock STi numbers!!

you said the dyno normally reads low? Pretty average numbers for the Sti are 230-240whp. I have only heard of a few that hit 250 stock. If your dyno read low, then you very well could have somewhere in the 260s!

hey chaos311clarity. Why does your car had 254 whp, I thought they come 300/300 whp?

I hate to break it to you man...but those numbers they quote on the TV commercials...thats not actually the power you are putting to the ground...you lose quite a bit of horsepower to drivetrain loss--- its kind of sad that an Evo owner doesnt know that...since AWD cars have it the worst.

Unless you drive an SRT-4 and then usually there dead on.... and then you get off the dyno try to launch and get wheel hop and wheel spin like a mofo :furious: FWD<AWD FTW

STI already has polyurethane trans mounts.....

It does but if you want to go hardcore with cusco mounts they are a whole lot stiffer and transmit a whole lot more NVH. Basically those are the no-give mounts. Group N would be a slight upgrade over stock mounts but... in all honesty it really isn't worth it unless they are worn out.

Won't be official until Monday or Tuesday - have to make sure the dealer is going to cooperate on the GTO, or if I'll have to sue them. Mostly likely, they'll grudgingly take the GTO back....

in preperation for an upcoming track day, as well as doing some maintenance to the car... ive been purchasing parts... they should start coming in this week... not all of the parts listed below have been ordered/secured yet so things may change up a little bit

slated for the install/maintenance:

-cabin air filter (after seeing other peoples filthy filter i think i should swap mine out)

-clean the K&n filter

-engine oil/filter change (currently using Q motor oil but considering switching)

-flush coolant system

-check power steering

-trans/diff fluid change (motul 90pa, gear300)

-remove stock suspension (struts, springs, mounts)

-install new suspension (either ohlins c/o or rce/ohlins combo)

-install strut tower bars (carbing front, random rear because itll get covered eventually)

-install ss brake lines (goodridge)

-get rotors cut

-install new pads (not sure on pads yet)

-flush brake fluid (motul rbf600)

-install fender braces (TiC)

-install wheels w/new tires (re01r's or re070's)

the washer has a spot to pour soap into..but i understand its just to blast everything off. should be good to use once in a while, but can it be used every time you wash? is there a point? wont it just blast the wax off

good to see the progress jon, I'm also not one to get rotors cut, i always opt for new ones. something is never quite the same.

i used a meguiars kit that had a microfiber, 2 small bars of clay and the quik detailer lubricant, and the clay is done haha... im 3/4 done the car, this **** is supposed to last for like 2-3 cars haha my car is FILTHY ... as soon as someone gets home im gonna go out and pick up the mothers kit to see if i like it any different... and dom if you come down next saturday to help me and will, we can detail ur car.

and grimm the reason im not opting to get new ones is because they are retardly expensive, and they dont even offer the kind i want (2 peice blank rotors).. i dont want the slotted or drilled or anything strictly because im pretty sure ill find a way to ruin them haha

grimm
06-01-2007, 03:54 PM
the one i have might be meguiars as well, mine was one bar of clay, the spray detailer and some carnuba wax? I'll have to double check if it was mothers or meguiars... did you wash the car before claybaring it? I can usually get 2 cars out of the bar easily...

I hear ya on the retardedly exspensive... I just have always had poor results with the rotors after they've been cut, they would warp on me soon after. But who knows, maybe mine were on their way out as is.

i actually went out and picked up a mothers kit to finish the car, i like the meguiars a bit better because the clay is white... and you can see what you are pulling out of the paint a bit better

as far as the detail, i started with the 3m fine cut compound after the clay bar because i knew the cleaner wax wouldnt do **** for me... and the fine cut is doing a pretty good job... i must say the car is coming out nicely... i decided to close up shop for the night because its raining and ****ty out..

Well, I finally got around to doing a full exterior detail on my car. I have been compaining for months about the water spots on my paint, and i finally got the chance to have my way with them haha. I should have more pictures this afternoon but I couldn't wait to share these.

The Process:
- prewash with power washer w/ 45 degree nozzle
- wash with turlewax ice soap and low pressure nozzle on PW
- rinse with PW 45 degree nozzle
- clay with meguiars for the rear 3/4 of the car and mothers for the front 1/4 (i destroyed the meguiars because my car had so much crap in the paint)
- 3m Fine Cut Rubbing Compound - porter cable 7424, orange LC CCS pad, 5.5 speed, and some spots done by hand with as many coats as needed to get the spots
- Mothers Paste Carnuba wax - porter cable 7424/hand, speed 3.5
- Stoners Invisible Glass on the windows and mirrors
- TurtleWax f21 foaming tire shine
- water and rag on the wheels by hand (because NOTHING else does a better job)

Payment: a beer and some much needed experience for myself.
Time: i didnt really keep track closely but between friday and saturday probably about 6-8 hours total (im a slow worker)

ok, so i've decided that i need to de-STi my car haha... in total it has 19 STi logo's on the car (3 on the front, 1 under the hood, 4 on the mudflaps, 8 on the interior[gauges, seats, gaugecontroller], 1 on the trunk and 1 on my muffler).... now the gauges stay, and the muffler stays.... what do you guys think is the best way to lower this... im kinda thinking the mudflaps should be the first to go, the look good but i mean its alot of sti logos... post up some thoughts!

ok, im not even sure where to start, but i know i need to let you guys in on all of the craziness thats been going on this past week and a half...

ok so lets see, so i had a crapload of parts coming in, in preperation of my track day yesterday... youve seen the list... whatever haha... so i had to go pick up some more stuff, before that dustin (totheix's) and i installed my strut tower bars that i got from turbotektuning (excellent pricing and fast shipping, cant beat that), big improvement with the carbing bar, not too noticeable with the tein rear...anyway... (if i miss anything im sorry haha)

friday june 8th: woke up early on my day off, drove to Shades of Gray to meet up with ryan and pick up his stock sti catback for my winter set up...then proceeded to drive up to clifton, NJ to meet up with caesar from Lightwerkz... he sold me some almost mint gold BBS's and a set of blizzaks... he also had possesion of a wing i purchased off of someone on IWSTI who was local to him... we shoved all this into my moms Highlander and proceed to drive home... long ass day...

saturday the 9th: Dom, goodfella732, drove what seems to be an endless drive, to come down and hang out in my area, that day spawned all the pictures and videos that he and i have posted in that time frame... we got some cool in-car video with my new camera mount that we installed...

sunday june 10th: at about 10 pm, my good friend/mechanic Don drove over with his moms escort wagon and we shoved 8 tires and 4 wheels in there so he could do the work i was paying him for haha...it was a tight squeeze and quite funny...think immigrants stuffed into a very small car..i also traded cars with don that night, since he was going to be working on my car i needed something to get to work in .. so i was rocking his zx2.

monday june 11th: don began work on the car, swapped all the fluids that i asked (coolant, engine oil, trans, diff) and mounted/balanced all the tires (silver bbs got the blizzaks, gold got the re01r's) and i went over to get the unmounted pirelli's that im currently selling ;) i also took home the silver wheels and the golds were on the car... progress was being made and i was getting nervous about the 16th... which was going to be my first ever track day

tuesday june 12th: when i got off work i drove over to don's shop (less than 5 min away) to hang out and help finish up what i could... he was in the process of doing the brakes, they were being cut (very ****ing slowly) by a shop down the road so we could only work as fast as they came in... either way... to compress this a bit... we got them on with only a minor set back (lower caliper bolt on the drivers side front stripped out and had to be helicoiled)... so the goodridge lines were on, the xp8's were on, and the sticky tires were on, i was amped. we proceeded to go bed in the pads. that was an adventure in itself haha. i called carbotech to find out how to bed in their race pads on the street haha guy told me do about 12 stops from 80-20.. get them warm and let them cool basically... it was interesting doing this on the highway with people driving by going WTF is that guy doin?... i went back to the shopped, paid my bill and went on my way. the reason i chose to have a shop do this is because it took some of the stress off of me... and i dont have enough time to do things thoroughly during the week...

wednesday the 13th: just drove around the car, got used to the tires a bit, and enjoyed the massive amounts of squeeling from the brakes

thursday the 14th: heres where the fun begins haha... ok so my plan for the weekend was this... drive down to MD to my gf's house thursday night, go to racecomp engineering on friday morning, then drive all the way to my cabin in the poconos that friday night... my plans were slightly skewed when my gf found out that a good friend/xbf that she dated for like 6 years, had died in a car accident, i was lost in what to do but thats neither here nor there... basically she didnt know what she was going to do so i had to kinda play things by ear... *GASP* from saying so much.... ok so i cleaned up the car, posted the pictures of the car with the gold wheels various places on teh intarweb and rolled out to MD (2 hour drive)... i didnt get there til late, and my gf was an emotional wreck, which i understand... i was still unsure whether or not i liked the gold/cgm combo.

to be cont'd...

friday the 15th: woke up and quickly got ready to make the haul from manchester to elkridge, MD... the drive wasnt too bad, although youd never know where the race comp shop is from the road haha... so, i pull up to their shop, meet dan and mike, and check out my new parts... ohlins struts, grp-n tops, whiteline fsb and some kartboy endlinks, my rear sway bar was supposed to come in that morning. so they pulled the car up on the lift and started working, meanwhile andrew took my gf and i over to the arundel mills mall where we stayed for a LONG period of time haha... there was alot of work to for those guys and it was nice to get out of the regular scene and check out the cool ass mall... so later in the day i got a call, whiteline sent them the wrong rear bar, i was like wtf, they had asked if it was cool to install it and i said whatever sure... well that turned out to be a legacy bar and just wouldnt work... so they managed to source a bar "locally" .. and mike went off to go pick it up.... it ended up taking mike roughly 3 hours to get back haha... he drove to mach v in virginia (HOLY **** thats going above and beyond) and picked up the bar, then they got finished with the install... this was a pretty big set back as far as time went, i was trying to make it to the poconos that night.. ok so after checking out the car/enjoying the new look... i headed out to a local place they recommended i get the car aligned at... NTB. Myles uses the one guy and he apparently does very well. but he wasnt there... so i ended up getting their other guy named derrick. he was moving slow and trying to get things where i wanted them (0 toe and -1.5 camber), he ran into problems adjusting the front camber ... and we decided in leu of time that it should just be left it was at like -1.4 on the drivers side and -1.8 on the passenger (not a big deal to me)... so by the time i got out of there, it was roughly 930 pm... HOLY ****, i still had at least 5 hours of driving ahead of me... i decided that it was best to drive back to my gf's house then go to my house for the night and sleep, she had decided to come with me because the guys funeral was not til monday...so we got to my house at about 1 am... late as balls, especially with a track day the next day... the ohlins were performing awesome with the rce springs and the sways... i was very pleased... its kinda hard to describe how it takes bumps, its firm but never bouncy... i love it...

saturday june 16th:
my first ever track day...and boy what a day it was... we had to wake up super early to go to the track (430 am)... we didnt get on the road til about 5... and we had quite a drive ahead of us... i was doing my best at staying awake on the boring ass PA turnpike... once we got up there we stopped and fueled up then proceeded to the track about 2 miles down the road... we pulled in to the infield and the excitement/anxiety/adrenaline started... this place was HUGE... being that ive never been this close to a track i was in awe...so we pull into the paddock (i grab a nice garage spot) and go register, i was in the novice group and we had class first, so after class we went out on track for the first time, wow what an experience that was, trying to hit lines and still be quick, i had no idea what i was doing... the instructor that jumped in my car is actually a pro race driver, JD King, hes doing very well in his series (formula 4, open wheel cars) and he was giving me some great tips to follow the lines and such and hit the turn ins... then we had a small break before the instructor rides... this is where the instructor gets into your car and drives you around the track... this was a HUGE eye opener... holy **** i was holding on for dear life... jd was incredible... on turn 3 of our course he actually was starting to get my car a bit sideways haha... tires were getting nice and warm, the car sticks like crazy... and he was hitting 120-125 on the straights and the only reason he didnt go faster is because he knew i was getting scared haha... that was one of the coolest things ive ever been a part of, someone driving my car the way it was prepared to drive... it was just so cool... and about halfway thru his laps i look down at the steering wheel... i notice his left hand looks a bit different... then i saw what it really was... HOLY ****ING MOTHER OF GOD... this guy is driving like this, with a prosthetic left arm... hes amazing... we then had to go back to the classroom and learn a bit more i was late to the class because JD and I were talking about lines and heel-toe and other crap i hadnt tried ever haha... so we went out for my second session of driving, this time a small asian guy (cant remember his name) got in the car and he was really working with me very well and showing me the lines and braking points... i was definitely improving over my first session...this session was actually for the first 3 laps, a no braking exercise, so that definitely helped me hit the lines better, but all the cars kept getting jammed up because of other not so prepared cars that couldnt do very well, anywho, i was glad i was improving. it was lunch time and i was getting very frazzled, my brain was running a mile a second after JD's drive and i was just reeling trying to get better... i decided that i might sit the next session out, and after talking with the cheif instructor, Dave Hess, we went back out, with dave driving... he was emphasizing being smooth and getting the right lines and trackouts... i think his goal was to show me that you can be fast and smooth at the same time (JD did this, but i couldnt take it in as fast as he was driving haha)... after a few laps i asked if i could take a spin... i was doing much better, hitting the proper spots... it felt great.. dave was giving me props... but i was tired ... i think that had a big part in my performance, not enough sleep. that was my last session of the day, i was tired and didnt want to push myself too much before the 2 hour drive home to SE PA... on the way home we actually stopped at the rest stop and took a nap... i was falling asleep at the wheel and didnt want to risk it...

ok so to sum it up:

if you get the chance, go to a track/hpde/pdx day... it was by far one of the best things i couldve done, it showed me how far i can push the car, and how much street driving is SO much different no matter how hard u think you drive...

the parts, i mean what can i say, i made the right choice for myself.... the ohlins/rce combo is fantastic... the drop is great, the ride is great, and it sticks very hard... the tires... wow, the RE01-R is a great tire... it stuck so well on the track and on the wet roads on the way home it basically behaved much the same... they grip. now i also discovered like most do, the stock STi seats blow... especially if you are as big as i am (6'1", 280lbs) my left leg is sore from holding myself against the door and bolster all day... so im gonna need a harness and some better/wider seats at some point... i guess ill finish this up with a mod list and thank you list...im sure there are some things/people i left out so if you see this and didnt get mentioned i apologize and just speak up and be acknowlegded haha...

i like the gold/cgm combo, would look even hotter with some 06 tails :)

and did the struts and everything come in yet? how are you liking the brake lines?

haha im not getting ur tails.. so forget that **** haha... struts are in.. im sure youll read up... the brake lines are great pedal feels very solid and with the pads and tires im using the car stops incredibly well. think coming down the back straight at pocono at 110-115 and slowing to like 50to make the chicane and pound out into the top of the bowl :)

damn Jon, you got me all hyped up to hear about your PDX experience and then you leave me hanging. I've only had one semi track day, but it wasn't in my car and I had a blast. I'm waiting to hear your stories from the day and now what you have in plan for the car. My philosophy on how to mod my car has changed so much since getting into auto-x and with my goal set on PDX's

yea man, it definitely changes ur perspective on things... i mean im almost wondering if ill ever need more power than i have... the car hauls major ass around the track, i mean i was on this evo all day, and a few vettes... thats a good feeling.
