412whp and 460 w lb-ft
It's running the same ECU it came from the factory with and can spin it's wheels in third, sometimes fourth.

God I wish it was mine. :(

EDIT: Details about the parts and dyno sheet
When I first started out building the monster, my intention was to build a streetable car with modest midrange power and be able use the car as a daily driver if needed......not a racecar. Could I have more horsepower??? Of course i could.....peak numbers over 6000 rpm do not excite me, area under the curve does. In fact, bringing the car to 7000 rpms with the stock valve train actually scares me a bit.
My next intention was to use as many stock saab parts as possible to find out just how far the stock setup would take me. Many ancillary components were changed, as well as the pistons and rods, but the rest of the motor was left relatively stock. the recipe is listed below:

engine B235R bored .040" over stuffed with JE pistons and crower rods. The crank, bearings, oil pump etc are all stock saab components. balance shafts and chains were left in place to maintain a nice smooth running mill.

head: stock T7 aero head with stock valves and springs with old T5 cams that I had in the basement. no work was done to this head.....hence my apprehension to bring the rpms over 7000. ARP head bolts used to hold the head in place.

fuelling: a walbro 255 fuel pump was installed in the stock assembly using the stock fuel lines and and stock fuel pressure regulator. Injectors are 630cc Siemens...used in favor of the RC engineering injectors that I purchased twice.

manifold/turbo/exhaust:stainless tubular manifold with swaintech coating. a top mounted a garret GT3076R with a Tial external wastegate(vented to the atmosphere) with a custom 3" stainless exhaust using a catco catalytic converter, magnaflow resonator and big magnaflow muffler to keep things quiet....until the wastegate opens of course. HKS recirculating dump valve. Big Big K&N filter in the wheel well...3" plumbing to turbo.

plugs: NGK BCPR7ES with traditional direct ignition cassette

intercooler:31"x12"x3" Yonaka motorsport with stainless plumbing.

clutch: SPEC stage 3+.......expensive but well worth the money

transmission is stock for now...LSD is on the shelf awaiting a new transmission

software: SQR custom tune

When did FWD's start to loose 88hp in the transmition?

Does the transmition magically become harder to rotate because you added HP to the engine? 450hp at the crank. A little (and I mean a little) more hp is wasted in heat in the tranny, but you would still be spinning it up that fast on a stock dyno pull.

Not to take anything away from a awesome car with a ton of HP, it's just a pet pieve of mine when people way overestimate hp to the next highest 100hp mark. Carry on.

Having worked at Willow Grove Jag/Saab/LR, I can tell you that Saabs are garbage. Talk about the most disconnected, awkward driving car you've ever driven combined with a weird interior. This is not an attack against FWD cars, but to be completely honest, I would never, ever consider a Saab - ever.

Raven18940
10-18-2006, 09:20 PM
Fixed for you, though saabs standard drivetrain loss is 15% and that's about 475 hp. What's crazy is that this is by no means the most wild SAAB ever. There are much crazier 9000's running around, pretending to be normal cars.

*blink* That's funny cause my 9-5 is one of the easiest and most communicative cars I've ever driven. And the interior is intuitive and easy to use, it's all the other cars out there that are wrong. :P

Agreed. I've driven plenty of other cars and i love the way my saab drives, handles, and everything. As for the interior i think it's great.

And to stay on topic that is an awesome project

RAVEN18940 i agree with you dont worry, my buddy has a white 9-5 aero that can take just about anything, and its the best thing in the world when we embarass people on the highway and the look of amazement on their faces hahaha, so it may be just a saab but it can still take half the people on this forum

looks pretty nicely done to me... i wouldnt take on the project but thats not whats in question. i'm glad there are saab fanatics out there and i'm glad there are civic fanatics and everything else imagineable. how much would it suck if everyone drove the same car with the same engine and the same upgrade path? how about a little show of applause for individuality?

The only internal work was the rods, pistons, and the massive 750 cc injectors and walboro fuel pump to feed the beast. I don't even think he had to cam it. Just a Garret 3076r turbo and an awesome tune of the Trionic 7 by Frank of SQR of Sweden.

I wish I could tell you more, but the guy who did it has been a little secretive about building, just pics and not a lot of details.

I think it's amazing and I don't really care for Saab's too much, but it's still an awesome feat. Let's throw his GTI up on the dyno and see what it puts down. My guess is something WELL under 412hp.

If I were the one saying "that's all?"...that's a different story, but my car is known for being a dyno queen.

Nice. My 2002 9-5 was a very good car for me. i loved the c@ckpit and the ride was very smooth and easy. Handling was not very good but it soaked up everything on the road and got 30+mpg doing 85+mph with fully packed inside.
I think the car in the OP needs BIGGER tires. From what im told, the saab ECU is the most advanced out there.

"Its quite hard why anyone would buy it, instead of a Merc"

"it's not a bargain either"

"inside, there is very little that would put that smile on.... all the people that own them"

"an engineer at Saab once told me that the limit for a fwd car is 220, this has 250"

" the steering is hysterical, its like driving a fast... bouncing castle"

"But, perhaps I missing something, perhaps it’s a bit cutting edge in some other unusual way.... Somehow... I doubt it"

and also ”you have to dig very deep to find the point of this car" hahahahaha

Of course a saab owner pics and chooses what he wants to hear...

You're missing the point, the piece is supposed to be him trying to figure out why us silly SAAB owners love our cars so much. Yes they aren't the fastest things for a race track or even at the limit, but somewhere in between the limit of grip and normal speeds, they're great fun to drive. You've gotta work a little to make them go quickly, but they're very easy to drive at the limit if you want to.
Of course a saab owner pics and chooses what he wants to hear...

Yeah, the rap-around windshield and extremely aerodynamic shape has nothing to do with the aircraft heritage. But you're right, other than the shape the cars have almost nothing to do with planes just like the original saabs back in 1964. Very similiar to BMW.

My car has a much better gearbox, lot less trouble than the 900/9-3, my linkage bushings are worn out though, need to replace them. But I'll gladly drive your car if you want to try and convert me. :)

You’re obviously missing the point, it’s not about that, I respect anything that is fast, nice, shows a lot of work and time into. Its the principle of the matter that its useless power in a FWD car...

Im not missing the point at all, I have driven many Saabs, there is no reason, I guess i just like something that is pretty fast, street, track and fun to drive all the time, not just work really hard to have a little fun. I can have more fun pulling the E brake in a honda civic, and also be faster around a track.

Why does the motor appear to be running downhill? If it is, WTF did they design it like that for?

Did you read the specs, he wanted it to be streetable. As a result mods that he needs to really break past 400 hp (ie cams, intake manifold, head work, and a bigger throttle body) weren't done as they compromise the off boost performance.

Yes I read the specs. The fact that he wants it streetable means the motor should not be level?

Look at the picture of heads-on shot of the car. The left side of the motor sits higher then the right, no?

Why is that?

Ooooooooooooo, I'm sorry, I thought you were talking about the torque curve. :P I'll look at my engine this afternoon, but I think that's just the way they are in the car. On the old C900 the engine was at a 45 degree angle mounted longitudinally.

EDIT: Checked for you Brad and that's just the way the engines are. :)

You just don't know how to listen, they tell you everything that's going on.

No, you're wrong, I drive one everyday, it has great feedback.

Go drive a real car then compare it to your saab I'm not hatin on that saab I'm sure it burns out forever and goes nowhere

So my car is a toy now. I've driven many cars and generally prefer my saab, especially over American stuff. You wanna talk about numb, I drove a new Mustang, horrifically awful. They made the steering heavy, but it has absolutely no feel, so what's the point of heavy steering, might as well make it light so it's easy to steer.
