basically, i want to get into digital photography and i want a decent camera to get me started, ive got a sony cyber shot but we all know its garbage. im looking for something i can take some high quality photos with. i have some background knowledge... its just a matter of remembering it.. (high school photography class) .... now as far as cameras go, ive been told the canon rebel XT and XTi are good, and a couple people here seem to like the Nikon's... i dont really see too many benefits of the XTi over the XT but i dont know much about any cameras and what i should be looking for in a decent set up... i def know i want to get some cool filters and a nice tripod.. but other then that... i dont know much. so if you could post some opinions and some info thatd be awesome.

The Rebel XT is 8.0 MP and XTi is 10.1 MP. I'm very happy with my XT. It's a great camera to learn with.

the XT is an awesome camera - I used it for a bit and toyed with a lot of settings and it's pretty easy to use once you get used to the camera

more activity in here today, then my same thread has had yet.
from doing my OWN research along with the bit i got from here. the nikon d50, 70 and now 80. would be a great starter camera. depending on how far into photography you want to go. it might help to go d200( i think i am going to ge this one)
but like a few said here. Nikon is the way to go. the cameras are generally the same, but the nikon/nikor glass is thousands of times better then any cannon kit lens you may get

dont get a xt. if you pick one up it feels like garbage. like cheap plastic assembled by children in buddapest. if your going canon check out a 20D or 30D. but my bias says NIKON FTW haha. check out the d50 or d70s. just compare cameras and make sure you feel comfortable with the cam you wanna get. i was gonna get a xt, but trol told me what i said above. you have to hold them in your hands to see which one you'll feel more comfortable with. /winded post haha.
edit...
pretty much every nikon/canon camera is very similar especially on the consumer level. they are in direct competition with each other and as a result their products are quite similar... so with that said, go put both of them in your hands and see which you prefer. thats really what it comes down to most of the time, how the camera feels in your hand.

Anyone have a good suggestion on where to buy one from?

i heard the XTi was kinda useless because you are trying to compress the image onto the same size map or whatever as the 8mp xt....
i see alot of you like nikon... and only a few of you mentions any reasons why... lets get some more info.. i know alot of people on here are interested in getting into this...

I myself am kinda leaning toward buying the D50, because i have heard nothing but good things about it. Does $349 sound alittle too low for that one, i found it on some website.

My guess is that's without a lens.

Yeah but the same site has it for $379 with 28-80mm lens. I'm alittle nervous about buying from them tho because all the other online retailers have it for at least 30 bucks more.

So any suggestions on places to buy? Have no problem with online ordering.
Oh yeah the D50 that i found online for 350, was more than likely an international model. Anyone know if that makes a difference or not?
Thanks

I posted to slow :P, Thanks alot. ill probably pick up that one for 580, since that is alittle closer to my price( say bye bye to beer and food).
Why do u suggest ordering it over the phone as to ordering it online?

you can order that one online i checked and made sure its not a gray market one gray market/international products dont have any Accessories just open boxed cams.
if its cheaper than 500 bucks for the body its a scam. normal price is 550 w/o a lense
