Dan's heart belongs to AWD, but his left and right feet and right hand are currently in love with a FWD.... Anyone want to donate a AWD to my cause?

In certain weather conditions AWD is the best FWD is the worst because there really is no way to really control the car if your front end slips.

That's because you're not making enough power! :rotfl:

I think I would like my sentra a lot more if it had a better differential. I autocrossed piknockout's Spec V once & the helical limited slip made it a lot of fun to steer with the throttle. My WRX has it's quirks too, when I turn left onto a crowned road, it'll spin the inside rear wheel & fall on it's face. The open rear diff will let all of the power go to one wheel. I would rather have a FWD with a good differential, than an AWD with crappy diffs.

mmm i used to have an srt-4 and FWD was fun...however the low 1st gear and tq steer got kinda old after a while...driving the GTO is much more pleasent and easier (low end torque). not here to bash anyone to each their own...but for me i doubt i'll ever go back to FWD

every layout has its benefits and drawbacks.

fwd works well from a roll, because the car is easy to control and has probably the least drive train loss of any of the platforms. but traction and torque steer are its weak points.

Hmm...I think the opposite. I think FWD it extreamly easy compared to RWD. With FWD the most domonant characteristic of the car is allways gonna be understeer. That is really easy to correct for=just let off the gas. It's a little different with RWD and oversteer. You have to properly set-up for a corner everytime and if you make a mistake it's less forgiving.

The only 4wd car I have ever raced is a Porsche 996tt. That is the best feeling and most balanced car I have ever driven. It's the best of both worlds. It's something like 98% RWD untill the drivetrain decides to distribute the power to the front wheels acording to the situation. Any average driver could turn extreamly fast times in that car.

I'll give ya that, i do think FWD is easier to drive than rear in most situations. I have driven all 3 types enough to know which i like the best and it still has to be the AWD, i know the car makes a different too but when i do buy another car it will likely be AWD(read as Subaru). Simply because AWD > FWD in the snow, lol not that all 3 arnt fun in the snow.

Nothing wrong w/ FWD, I've pulled decent times at the autocross, beating AWD and RWD cars on the solo course. I've also done very well at the drag stripw/ what I had.

I'd prefer a RWD vehicle though. FWD is fun..burnouts are super easy ;)

From a vehicle dynamics standpoint FWD is the worst drivetrain layout possible. However, as has been stated all of the various systems have their benefits. I would personally take a RWD car anyday of the week for racing. However, a PROPERLY setup AWD system is also great.

FWD Pros: Compact, efficient.
FWD Cons: Understeer, torque steer, poor weight transfer, poor weight distribution.

RWD Pros: Balanced handling, good weight transfer, good weight distribution.
RWD Cons: Oversteer (not necessarily a con if used correctly, where as understeer is always bad), more parasitic loss than FWD. Poorer all weather traction (correctable with appropriate tires).

AWD Pros: Great traction in all weather (still dependent on tires in severe weather), weight is generally well distributed.
AWD Cons: Weight, parasitic loss, handling can exhibit a wide range of issues depending on the systems design. Many common AWD systems use a FWD bias lay out which tends to exhibit understeer, some are RWD biased and exhibit oversteer, others are even split and exhibit both (weird feeling).

I would look at it this way 95% or more of all true performance cars are RWD. Pretty much all race cars are RWD (outside of WRC). Most of the advanced AWD systems used on perormance cars are heavily biased to the rear, just using the front tires to assist corner exit and straight line traction. At the end of the day RWD is the "best" setup for a true performance car.

How much would you like to bet on that. Name one competitive race series outside of WRC (where AWD is almost a necessity) where RWD cars are not the dominant vehicles. RWD has long been the standard of performance cars.

I wasn't trying to pick on any particular brand of car, I was just trying to give the best analysis of the pro's and con's of each setup. I have owned cars with all three types of drive systems and RWD is by far the most balanced, responsive and best handling configuration you can have...if you can drive.

guess you didnt get the memo F1 is going to start using all wheel drive...oh yea and the top fuel dragsters are also going all wheel drive so they can hit 2's in the 1/4...sigh

he also stated that those that are "AWD" also put most of the biasis towards the rear of the vechile just to assist with traction in a straight line but most of the power is still hitting the rear wheels.

i think RWD and FWD both take more skill to drive.

not all fwd suffer from torque steer.

Only the ones without enough power.

While it is true that there are plenty of factory cars that are FWD that have greatly reduced torque steer (Acura TL and Cobalt SS come to mind) it is still a problem that is inherent with the FWD architecture. As soon as you start putting serious power down to even the best FWD system torque steer becomes apparent.

Actually any car that applies torque to the front wheels can "torque steer" (I put it in quotes cause the modern interpertation isn't actually what torque steer really is), it just requires a lot more power in an AWD. And RWD cars fishtail, which is soooo much better. :P

And I completely disagree that AWD is superior in the snow. SAAB has said for years and years that you don't need AWD to handle snow (and they get a lot of it in Sweden), all you really need are snow tires. I once saw a video of a standard 9000 with snow tires absolutely flying along a snowy road.

I like FWD, it's very easy to handle, it forgives the foolish and rewards the skillful. Though it does hold my car back at the corner exit cause I have too much torque. :(

mini's have torque??

um yea they do at least the MCS. They have a nice engine curve too.

With the Mini, the bmw engineers implemented a equal length front drive shaft to help reduce torque steer significantly. Hardest thing with the mini though is getting traction on the launches. The ultra performance runflats are nice but not the stickiest.

With any FWD a nice LSD will always help launching, driving it hard in some twisties, or just simply turning corners.

I have been driving fwd cars until recently and i have to say RWD is so much more fun. Over steer is great if used properly while it is less forgiving, you just need more practice to use it to your advantage. I would rather fishtail in a RWD car then have all 4 wheels slide in a fwd car. When you loose tracking to the powering wheels in RWD you can still steer and slap down some throttle to power out of the turn or drift, unlike in fwd where you keep steering, let of the throttle, and hope it turns. I have driven my roommate's srt4 and the torque steer can be down right dangerous and tiring after awhile.

I would suppose the Porsche systems that someone talked earlier about would be the best. An AWD system that is bias towards the rear wheels and only there to save your butt.

But they all have +'s and -'s there isn't one thats good in every situation.

I have drivin a few AWD cars and like them, but i gotta say... RWD FTMFW! I drive a 72 cutlass everyday and I love having RWD. FWD in my opinion is lame for reasons already stated (torque steer mostly.... ew....). So for me I will go for rwd or awd.
