If I had the choice to purchase a vw, I would have to go with a mid to late 90's gti vr6. 5 grand can get you about 400hp!!!

The passat would be a nice car to have if you can pick it up pretty cheap, I wouldnt pay a lot for it because they are slow as balls in my opinion.

Go for it man. Just be aware that it is gonna be slow for a while( if not forever). Check in on the timing chain/belt tho. I have a feeling my car needs to have it changed. And its got a turbo.

Im not trying to be a d*** but late 90's vw's really just dont last as long as the early to mid 90's. From what I have seen with friends those engines normally last anywhere from 150,000-180,000 miles. Im sure there are some instances where the engines have lasted longer, but from experience I have seen them only last inbetween that amount of mileage. So you should be able to get about 27,000-57,000 miles out of the engine, before you would have to rebuild or replace the engine.

I will check that, thank you. Ive seen chips for these for like 130$ that bumps them up to 209hp? [its 170 stock]

I wont have the car that long, and if i did, id prolly juss rebuild/build it up anyways, but yes, thanks for the advice. And I think you all are gettin the hint that I want speed out of it...Not really...I want more luxuray, cause if I get one more ticket...Im ****ED lol. So I kinda wanna lay low for a while, juss want it fast enough to suprise some of these ricers :), and a intake, chip and BOV should do that :)....More crit pleasee

The coil pack tend to be crap on the 1.8TEE's And as fast as chipping it tends to add 20 hp but there are gobbs of upgrades for the 1.8T over the V6 check out www.passatworld.com

As an owner of a VAG product:
1) The car is slow and heavy. You can change how slow it is by upgrading the turbo (and there are LOTS of options for the 1.8t engine) but you will always be battling weight.
2) Go over the records of the previous owner. Check for timing belt changes, as well as all fluid and see if they've had any problems at all with the turbo.
3) Whomever suggested a VR6 - a reliable car only if kept stock and driven by some little old lady. They have tons of problems, and if you you modify it at all those get expensive.
4) Check out a Jetta with the 1.8t engine. Smaller car, still nice, not as heavy.
5) If you want upgrades, go to vwvortex. The guys there have done tons.
Enjoy the car.
