View Full Version : Poll: e-Brake with a manual car

Ok, so I was out one day with a co-worker, we drove to lunch in his 2000 Impreza L Wagon, 5-speed and when we got back to work, I noticed he didn't use the e-brake when parked. I asked him why not and he said that the e-brake is over-rated and not supposed to be used and whatnot. I'm not big on manual cars, but I thought you are told to use it whenever parked?

He said when he sees a manual car with an e-brake up, it pisses him off and he just thinks when they actually need to use the e-brake for an emergency, they will be SOL cause they prolly broke it from yanking on it.

Well, I know there are ALOT of guys here that are pro-stick, versus automatic-lovers (like me), so here's a Poll, do you use your e-brake when parked on level land?

I always use the e-brake. I didn't one time w/ my 5-speed mustang, in gear and off, came out, it moved from one parking spot, to another

I do it in every car I drive. My girl gets mad at me when I do it in her truck. Habit from driving stick for to long.

I always use mine as well. Not worth the risk not too. With my luck, I'd think I was on level land and I'd come back out to find my car rolled away.

i assume if he's not using the e-brake he's leaving it in gear? meh, i use my e-brake.
and what if its not really called an e-brake, its called a parking brake? does that change things???

It's called an ebrake for someone to pull up: for an instant emergency rotation of the car.

do some cars call it a parking brake? I thought everywhere it was called an emergency brake....for all you automatic people that use it...i just ask...WHY?

Using the e-brake when parking on a not completely level surface should relieve any stress seen in the drivetrain. So if you have an auto and park on a hill, you should use the e-brake. For stick, use it all the time because sometimes things slip. And it's a brake, pulling up the e-brake when you park is going to wear the brake components less than driving around the block.

someone on the first page said somethin about it not wearing out the breakpads, which is true, however.........over time the cable stretches out and it becomes less and less effective, because it doesn't clamp the pads down as tight. PHEW, that was a long sentence!

but yes...I do use it anyways whenever I park.

There is an adjust ment there, and if I'm not mistaken my maintence schedule includes checking the parking brakes functionality. I'd rather use it every day and know it works than to not use it for 3 years and then find out it dosent work at the worst possible time.

legally automakers can't call it an emergeny brake, because in an emergency situation short of loosing brake fluid, the "e-brake" makes the situation worse.

The PARKING BRAKE however should be used on all cars. It relieves stress on the drivetrain. Plus i have watched a Toyota T100 pop out of gear and roll across a parking lot into a beetle. Funny as hell. haha. The smaller drum brake built into the inside of the rear disc is not meant for stopping a rolling car just for holding it in place... and usually the pads on it cannot be replaced without replacing the entire mechanism back there.

my ebrake/parking brake is pretty effed... the pads are worn really bad... i noticed this when i took the rotors off when i changed my wheel bearings... i guess the owner b4 me tried to ass drag it... anways thats my fun project for the weekend now to mention it... change the pads and the cable... tons of fun...

You have a drum e-brake. So if the pads are worn it doesn't matter. You need to check the shoes or just try and adjust the cable at the handle.

I always use my e-brake. When I'm on a hill I'll put it in gear as well otherwise it will be in neutral.

someone told me not to use it all the time, they said it can mess up the cable after a while, so when you need it it may not be as effective.

if you don't use it for a while then use it on a hill I have heard of more then one time when the brake gets stuck on from lack of use.

but I usually us it.

Despite accidentally selecting the wrong option on the poll i always use my ebrake! A few years back I was at a flyers game, some idiot didn't put the ebrake on in his Porsche and some how it rolled out of its spot and into the car opposite it across the lane. To top it off an SUV took his spot that he rolled out of .

I use mine all the time, in autos and manuals. It relieves some stress on the driveline and also prevents it from being stuck, in case you do eventually need it. I also use it when staging at the track in my eclipse. 5k+ stutter box, e-brake up and bump it in with the clutch.

I always use it..in every car i've owned and everytime I change rear pads i give the system a check and adjustment, not really hard to keep it working properly, i park put the parking brake on, let the car settle and then put it in first, lets the stress of the drive train but incase the ebrake fails the trans will hold it...

Its called the parking brake for a reason. If your friend thinks its going to stop him in an emergency then hes got another thing coming (probably the car he will be smashed into).

i dont see how keepin it in gear causes stress, well it does but so does driving the car and down shifting

I don't unless I'm on a hill. Idk, I learned not to, and I did anyways one winter, and it was really cold out and my e brake cable I guess froze and snapped, then needless to say I was ****ed.

i just park in reverse. ive seen more e-brakes fail than trannys. and the e-brake CAN be used to add extra braking force in an emergency, has to be used gradually though like a regular brake. saved my bacon a couple of times in the dodge

Always use the parking brake/e-brake (always have.) However, it is suggested to not engage the e-brake after very hard driving so you don’t cook the pads (I try to keep that in mind but I sometimes forget – the e-brake is a habit.)
