I was just curious how subarus with high mileage were. In particular a 98 2.5 rs with 138k miles, but the heads were rebuilt 40k miles ago. I know it mainly depends on how the car was taken care of and everything, but in general, how are they once they start gettin up to the higher mileage?

The 98 RSs as well as the other GC bodies are notorious for having headgasket problems - if the heads were rebuilt though no doubt they put on a new HG so one of the main points of failure was taken care of. In all honesty that engine should run for another 50k without dying no problem. The EJ251s are a bit underpowered but not turbo so their life span should be a bit longer.

Then again, you should be saving up for a swap with those kind of miles too :D

Hindsight this probably should have went in the subaru section, sorry mods, you can move it if you'd like.

And yes, if i were to acquire the car I would definitely look into a wrx or sti swap. I dont know much about subaru's beyond having awd haha. If someone could give me a general price on a turbo engine, sti or wrx, just a good base start, i would really appreciate it

subbie swaps are expensive last time i checked. STi motors are priced somewhere arround $6k and up i believe. why joe what do you go up your sleeve?

98s are EJ25D and my motor ran fine when I pulled it out with 94k turbo miles(100k total) on it with only oringed heads. I know of many RSs tipping on the edge of 200k miles and still running strong.

Thats for new STi engines.

The older STi engines (v1-3) you can get for under 3k

And you can get WRX swaps for under 2k

My brother got my dad's old legacy when he got a brand new one. It is a 93 with about 250,000 miles on it. Believe it or not nothing major has gone on it. It still runs in the family. Its my bros daily driver. My two cents is that subs are one of the most reliable cars if not the most. Youll be good

I have had my 04 since 2003. Been in for warrenty work once last summer, but the problem fixed it self on the way to the dealership.

Knock on wood I hope it stays this way.
