Verizon has been installing FIOS in my neighborhood for three weeks. Every day a bunch of mexican come and dig up cables next to the sidewalk along my cul-de-sac then fill it back in. They have repeated this for weeks, digging up and filling the same holes over and over and over. I have no idea what they are doing since none of them I talked to spoke english. I'm assuming they are just wasting time to drag out a install contract.

I've had FIOS since March. Overall I like it better than Comcast. Of the three main things:
TV: Has more channels and they are laid out more intelligently. Also, the packages are a lot cheaper and give you everything. You have a choice of "movies", "sports", HBO and Cinemax. You still get Comcast Sportsnet, the ONLY channel that Comcast has that FIOS doesn't is CN8. Normally that wouldn't matter, but Comcast is showing 5 Flyer's and 5 Sixer's games on CN8 this year instead of CW. However, with my sports package, I still got the games, I just had to watch the other teams broadcast. The movie package gives you like 72 channels of movies (Starz, Showtime, etc.) along with the OnDemand and HD for each one. It only costs like $12 a month, so is a pretty good deal. The sports gives you ALL of the NFL, MLB, etc. packages plus other channels for $12 a month and includes HD content. Then you have HBO and Cinemax which are each $12 a month. Overall there is more HD content than Comcast and the OnDemand is a LOT better. I found it to be faster, more reliable and it has a bigger movie collection including HD movies. The DVR box is pretty good and can record in standard or HD. You can record 2 standard at the same time, or one HD and there is a 160gig hd in the box. You can also watch recorded content on any box in the house, same thing with OnDemand. So, if I record a show in the living room or order it OnDemand, I can watch it on any TV in the house.
Phone: Probably the biggest difference over Comcast. I used to have the Comcast phone service and it was horrible. The Verizon VOIP is just like talking on a regular phone. They also provide a battery back up system (the thing that is plugged in) so that if the power goes out, you can still use your phone for up to 48 hours.
Internet: I always thought Comcast was plenty fast for me, but the FIOS (25mb dl and 5mb ul) was noticeably faster than my old Comcast setup. I guess the biggest thing with the Verizon internet is which package you get as they are very scalable. I have the middle package and I would imagine it is equal to the newer Comcast, so the lower two options are probably slower than Comcast. Other than the speed factor at the higher end of FIOS there really is no difference.
Overall: I prefer FIOS to Comcast. My service only had one interruption and that is when they installed FIOS at my neighbors place, they accidentally turned ours off at the box. I called Verizon at 6pm on a Friday and they had someone out to fix it by 10pm that night. So, that just shows you their level of customer service, they even credited me one days service for the outage without me asking. My old Comcast setup required frequent restarts of the cable box and the modem. My FIOS equipment has been running without interruption for the past 9 months.

Most places make you pay for that stuff though..... Cox in RI did the same thing...
I still say, the best thing to come to Television was DirectTv. Never had an issue with it since we got it installed, TONS of HD stuff, and all in all, awesome service.
I do the like the idea though of having the one DVR, and being able to watch recorded stuff from that anywhere in the house. Do all the TVs need DVR? or just the one?

You pay extra for those channels on Comcast as well. I think they may be included in the digital package, but I remember my old Comcast setup I didn't have those channels until I got the Starz, Showtime, etc. package.

I'm not getting them for free. I pay like $12 a month for them. They are all in the 700's on my channel guide. Right now I have NFL, NHL and NBA. I also get the other channels you were refering to. I have no reason to make it up. I picked all the options I could when I signed up. At that time my "sports" package was over 70 seperate channels to accomodate all the different games.

None of that is avaiable here in West Chester. So for $12/month you get every NFL game and every NBA game ($12 each)?
I'm going to call and see if I can get that too.

When I signed up I had a choice of "movies", "sports", "foreign language", HBO or Cinemax.
Each of the "packages" was $12 per month and it was $15 for HBO or Cinemax. I took everything except "foreign language" and Cinemax. The sports group included the packages for each major sports league. I asked the installers if I got all of those channels as part of the sports package and he said, yes. I pay $12 a month for all of them. I don't know if the channel line up is different between Jersey and PA, my guess is that it is. If you go to their website the channel guide does change based on your location. It may have been part of the promotional package when I signed up originally. I guess I will see if that's the case when my 1 year is up, but on the bill it doesn't list all the sports stations seperately, so who knows.

Vypurr, with FiOS, every TV needs to have a box, or you only get like 12 channels or something. You should call and confirm with them, but I remember the tech saying it is completely not worth it to run the cable unless there is a box as you only got a couple channels. This has something to do with the way the FiOS signal was sent.
I recently had to change to Comcast as I moved to Moorestown, which doesn't have FiOS. I will say that the new Comcast "premier" package is overall a better deal than FiOS money wise, but I still would overall prefer the FiOS service to Comcast.
OMGz, you must have "Blast" service on your Comcast, I have the same thing. It's 16/2 service to compete with FiOS. I've been routinely getting 27/1.5 off of my connection using "Speak Easy" to test it. This is still new and isn't available everywhere.

Depends on your location. As someone who actually used to install FiOS, I think I can answer that. If you've got a fairly new house that has one of those "OnQ" systems or similar where all your house wiring runs to it shouldn't take more than 4 hours to install everything, including running the line to the house, hooking up the equipment, and setting up the router and boxes. If you live in some POS and need 7 new cable lines ran it is gonna take a lot longer.

It's a big house in Jenkintown(duplex). I've got Coax ran inside to my TV and cat5 run to my room from where I installed my Comcast modem in the living room. I have a Coax line running outside to the side of the house where the demarc is. The FIOS strip is on the same pole I ran my aerial line from. My only question would be about the ONT. I don't think there's a power box outside of the house and the basement that's on that side of the house is my downstairs neighbor's. He is a cool guy, but he will be working when Verizon is supposed to come out. Is there any way they can go without running electric to it? I am just getting internet and TV.
I think the only things the tech would need to do would be run the line from the pole, install the ONT, hook my brand new coax line to the FIOS thing in the ONT, and then hook up the equipment. If I had an installation like this at work I would be kissing my customer's feet.

Wait, FiOS runs on coax?

07-28-2009, 11:10 PM
Wait, FiOS runs on coax?
Inside the house it does. The fiber optic cables aren't flexible enough to be tackled along walls on extreme angles. The fact its run to the house is good enough. We, at Comcast, still run fiber to the node in busy areas with lots of clustered housing or to the tap(pole) in more spread out areas.

So can they just reuse the old coax?

So can they just reuse the old coax?
Yuh, inside the house they can. But, being a new service and all, any good installer will rip out the coax that isn't up to the standards(di-electric that's bent or squished, bad fittings, RG-59 cable, etc). I do installations from high-profile DirectTV or Dish Network customers sometimes with some of my technicians and we rip that stuff out. It makes it easier because if that house has problems at least you will know the wires are all new.

Nope. Levittown, lol.
It's at most at the modem. Past that is the pole. Definitely not my router, but you can watch the modem die off and go into fresh boot status with all the lights indicating connects, then fails on one of them and restarts the blinkfest until it's back into communicating.

It can be the modem. But, what you are describing is just a hunt session. When a modem can not communicate with the Comcast CMTS(this hardware controls all pieces of equipment and synchs it with the plant) the CMTS "drops" it and the modem tries to re-establish a connection. Most of the problems in this area are caused by water in the line, some piece of metal or dirt in a connector, or too many connections between the modem and the demarcation point causing a high upstream. The CMTS will stop communicating with your modem with an upstream of 50 or higher. In very limited cases can you go as high as a 57 while remaining connected. Most of those cases is when you are connected by yourself to a single node(very rare).
type in 192.168.100.1 into your browser and go into the "diagnostics". Take a screenshot or something and I will take a look.
