K-Car people, need Help with a sick Dodge Spirit

My friend has a 95 Dodge spirit with a 3.0L V6, trouble is the headgaskets have gone. I know nearly nothing about this car, other than the V6 was sourced from mitsu and isn't that great. Are the headgaskets easy to do? Is it easier to replace the whole engine (as the mechanic suggested)? Would it be better in the long run to source one of the less powerful 4 bangers or are they even more trouble? I need to fix this as cheaply as possible. Any information is great appreciated.

Are you sure it's the head gaskets? If it's blowing blue it's probably the valve seals. A common Mitsu 3.0 problem.
