im just wondering what kinds of fluids everyone uses... its almost time for me to do the first oil change on the STi and im probably going to use my old favorite quakerstate Q high performance 10w30, i might get some redline gear lube and such for the diffs but thatll be later down the road... ive heard good things about royal purplestuff as well... i know alot of you probably use mobil 1 motor oil... but hey post up... tell me your experiences. why do you like said products? etc

i would do mobil1 synthethic, 10w30 or whatever subaru recomends, if i were you.it dosnt break down as easy and sludge up the motor like ive seen dino oils do.
dont really have to worry about the diff or tranny oil at this point, since the car is so new.

It's not a bad idea to do diff fluid early. I did mine around 4k and the fluid was really nasty. Make sure you use 90WT mechanical LSD oil for the rear diff-the STi rear diff is different from other Subaru's. Your only options are the stuff from Subaru or Motul 90PA LSD oil. I think Silkolene makes something too, but I haven't seen it. I used the Motul, because it is a little cheaper than the OEM stuff.
I also use Amsoil 5w30 in the engine. Great stuff-my STi uses maybe a half a quart in 4000 miles. If you become a preferred customer from Amsoil, it is actually cheaper than Mobil 1, and MUCH better.

side note: you are from thorndale and you never came out to a meet? wtf mate? lol
the reason i said i like the Q was because it was the only motor oil that was able to quiet down the lifters in my old car...whats the difference between LSD oil and regular gear oil?

I use the regular Napa 10w30 oil. As for drive line, I use Mobile One ATF (8.00/quart) and Mobil One gear oil for the t-case.

I'll definitely come to a meet! Let me know when the next one is scheduled. I don't think I've seen your car around-there aren't many CGM's in this area.
The STi has a mechanical (clutch type) rear LSD. LSD oil is mineral based and has special friction modifiers to keep chatter to a minimum and make the diff less grabby. If you use regular gear oil it will lock up much easier, and eventually burn out the clutches it the diff. Subaru actually released a TSB about this because so many dealers were using the wrong fluid in the STi's. It's amazing how little Subaru dealers know about this car.

the LSD has it's own casing and it's own fluid. Go to the back of your car, bend down and look at it. There will be 2 bolts, the bottom is to drain, the top is to fill.
The tranny fluid is for well...
the tranny.
On another note, mechanical diffs sound sick.
I want one although I know there would really be no point to it :\

I only use mobil 1 5w30 for my car. As for tranny and diff fluid there is alot of debate on this everywhere and no one is right or wrong really so use what subaru says it will save you alot of headaches in the future.

If your nearly brand new STi is using oil you should consider a thicker oil. I like M1 5W40 Turbo Diesel Truck, but as you're an Amsoil fan I'd suggest Amsoil 5W40 European car formula.
The best synthetics get the ACEA A3/B4 rating. Be careful though, higher numbers aren't better. For example M1 5w30 Extended Performance has a ACEA rating of A5/B5, this is actually worse than A3/B4 and is really a stricter version of A1/B1.
Few oils that meet this spec:
M1 0W-40 (kinda weak sauce compared to most mobil 1 products, but good in the grand scheme)
M1 15W-50
Castrol Syntec 10W-40
Castrol Syntec 5W-40
Castrol Syntec 5W-50
Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (made in Germany, very good, difficult to find though)
Quaker State Fully Synthetic 10W-30
Quaker State Fully Synthetic 5W-50
Amsoil European Car Formula 5W-40
Redline oils technically don't have an ACEA rating, but I'd look for one with a HTHS score of 4 or greater, that's the 30 or 40 weights.
I don't know how well a subaru will react to thick oil, with european cars generally the thicker the better. I'd stay away from the 50 weights. I'd get the syntec 0w-30, but it's only available at autozone and nearly impossible to find. :( My second choice is M1 5W40 (not the 0w40), but the Quaker state 10w-30 would work well too.
I use m1 5w40 in my engine, redline MTL in my gearbox, and Valvoline DOT 4 in my brake lines.

My wrx used to loose a quart of mobile one per 3k miles. I switched over to Castrol Synthetic and havent had any loss since. In fact I'm changing it now. :supz: Be real carefull about the tranny fluid you choose, Subaru's are rather finiky or so I was reading on Nasioc.

Less than half a quart in over 4k miles is NOTHING. All engines are going to consume a bit of oil between oil changes-a quart per thousand miles is actually considered "normal". I used Mobil 1 for years and thought it was the best until I tried the Amsoil. It is far superior to Mobil 1 in every aspect.

My engine doesn't use any oil and I drive it like I stole it. My mom's camry that's 8 years old and has 120K on it doesn't use a drop. Maybe it's normal for you suby guys, but it's not normal to the rest of us.
And how exactly did you determine that Amsoil was "far superior"?

You're wasting that oil, you can run that at the very least 5k, if not more.
