I read the sticky "WRX Gear Attack". I was wondering what other WRX owners were doing about breaking first and second gear so I can prepare myself. I have an 02 WRX with no power adding modificatons, but i plan on going stage 2. Before I start making more power should I upgrade my gearbox with an RA gearset or some other type of upgraded gearset.
The car is my daily driver and I have taken it to atco. In the future I plan on getting into autox, so it will be under stress. Is it worth addressing the problem now, or should i just wait till the tranny gives out.

either do a 6speed swap or get straight cut gears 1.2.3.
RA gears are stronger but will still break

Wouldn't straight cut 1.2.3 be a little loud for a daily driver?

unless your a bad drive it's not nessasery to upgrade your gearbox before stage 2. After stage 2 it depends what you plan on doing with the car to determine which gearset you should get.

You should be fine stage 2 for a while. I went 35k on the car, being through multipe setups like vf34's, vf30's etc and I didn't break it until my current 18g setup. Stay stock clutch and be carefull, just upgrade when the time comes. Also I would definately not do RA gears, they are weak still. I would go with PPG straight cut 1-4 or straight cut 1-2 and helical cut 3-4. The only other option other than that would be a sti 6mt swap which I have and love to death!

If i got the PPG gearsets can i swap out with the stock gears without any other modifications. also is there a shop around south jersey that will do this for a reasonable price or is this something that someone on TST could help me with.

Your best bet is to call Andrewtech automotive in Gaithersburg, MD. He is a dealer of PPG and also the #1 installer for them.

yes i been wondering about this too.. whats better.. upgrade the five speed to make it stronger or just go with the sti swap.. whats the cost of the upgrade compared to the swap..

I have had my car for over 3 years and 57,000 miles on it with no problems(knock on wood). As long as you dont beat the ish out of your transmission you should be fine. If you plan on putting down some serious power then you should think about getting a swap, or your a lunitic with the car.

if you have the cash get straight cut 1-2 and helical 3-4 and never worry about the trans again. But you going need at least 5k.

Dont launch the car alot either. I blew 4 stockers and 2 kaaz gearsets. It drove me to sell the car cause i was tired of dealing with it.

You must have been putting down some serious power. im sure that it was more then stage 2. Crazy 2 kazz sets?

I had 311whp on my v7 and never once had a problem with my 5spd up to 8000rpm. Its all in how u drive. Don't drop the clutch slip it. U don't want to buck the car real bad when launching and shifting...otherwise it will break. Shift easy when racing...let the power carry you thru the qtr mile. I have countless times launching at 6 grand and having no problems even once 7 grand...good luck with your decision!

and just a little fyi... Andrew at PPG even admits that he cannot say for sure that straight cut gears are actually stronger than helical cut... there are some theories that say straight cut are stronger, and some that say helical is stronger, but there are so many things that facter into the overall strength there's really no way to speculate yourself to a definite answer.
according to PPG, they have never had a set of straight or helical gears break though, so that says a lot about their product...
oh and i got a 6 speed, just because it was a good bit more economical for me at the time. if the prices were equal i would have gone PPG though...
