I went to get my M3 inspected today and they failed me because my shift knob doesn't have the gear indicators anymore since I switched it over to a momo one, how dumb is that? All german cars are laid out the same except for Benz.

You're not the first person I know to be failed for that. It is pretty stupid.

If you need a shift knob to tell you where first gear is you shouldnt be driving.

Not really. It costs the state of NJ more money to fail a car than pass. NJ inspection is free there guy.

Ah, runs us 20-30 bucks. A fail gets you a bright red sticker on your windshield and every cop within a 20 mile radius runs out to ticket you.

Yep, it's free unless you are heavily modded and go to a gas station. We have 45 days to make changes to the car to pass.

It has failed inspection for the following condition(s)
Shift indicator missing/incorrect

to to staples and buy a bright orange round sticker and a sharpie. draw your shift indicator onto the sticker and plop it on the top of the knob.

but really, would that work?

I have a 5 spd, normal configuration shift pattern...but the shifter isnt screwed on correctly so the shift pattern is incorrect. instead of shifting up down, diag up down, diag up it is right left, diag down right, left, diag down right. (rotated 90 degrees)

Wonder if that would fail?? That inspection point is a total joke. If you don't know your shift pattern, buy an automatic

does it have to be ON the shifter, or just somewhere near it? you can probably find a little sticker somewhere online to stick near the shifter. this isnt the first time ive heard of this

My friends trans am has the shift pattern on the plastic around the shift boot. Comes from the factory like that no pattern on the knob it's self.

I failed inspection on the M when I didn't replace my painted front reflectors with OEMs. If your car does not come with reflectors on the front bumper, then you don't need them. If it is OEM equipment, it's required that you leave them there. How lame...

I agree.....But, what if someone else needed to drive it? Like a cop.
