View Full Version : resale value of beater cars?
I have been looking around for a beater for a couple of months now. I've watched the For Sale section, paper, and other online places but the cars that would interest me are WAY overpriced. i have only sold 1 car in my life, the rest went to the junk yard so I don't really know how to sell a car but according to KBB people want almost twice what it is worth. I was looking at an older CRX that was destroyed. Didn't run, looked like someone too a baseball bat to the roof, hood and back, most of the interior was either gone or painted 4 different colors, the car had been repainted a different color with what looked to be a rattle can, and he couldn't even find the title and still wanted $2000 for it. Now come one how do people think they can get top dollar for trash or do people actually pay it? Your thoughts?
go to ebaymotors and setup a local search with prices descending (under advanced) you should be able to get it down to like 25 miles. good luck
Ohh no I didn't really want advice on how to find a car. Really I am not ready to buy yet anyway. I'm just wondering how people can sell junk for so much. I sold my 95 Merc Tracer for $600. It was a fair price for the car but I can find the same car right now for $1200. Its just amazing how much people ask for their 10 to 15 year old vehicles.

The answer is:
People are stupid.
Stupid people want a ridiculous price for crap and then stupid kids go and buy said crap, reaffirming that the ridiculous price was "OK" to the stupid seller. It's a vicious cycle. You have to haggle. Point out why their crap is crap and why it will never sell for that price. I bought a 93 impreza for $400 . The original seller wanted 1800 for it - until I told her that she hadnt changed the oil in forever, the transmission was practically bone dry, the brakes were shot, and the tires were bald. She was happy to get 400 out of me after I told her all of that.
I just think people dont know any better, maybe stupid isn't the word. Ignorance might be better.

Whenever I sell a car, I ask for WAY more than I expect to get. That way I can be talked down to more than its worth still and make the buyer think they are getting a hell of a deal cuz the price dropped so much!
