Since I drive a 91 do they only do a visual inspection of the exhaust? I was thinking about getting rid of my cat when I have my exhaust done and wasn't sure if it would come back to haunt me at inspection time.

Places should do a visual test for a cat bust often times that doesn't happen.
The only difference is they don't plug into your diagnostic port since you are OBD I. (Pre 95)

on pre 96 cars or cars without obd2 systems you recieve a dyno test or a two speed idle test. i would not recomend removing the cat because your car would have to pass a sniffer test where a probe is placed in the tailpipe and measures the amount of harmfull emissions. a car without a cat will fail this test almost everytime. you could try and get a high-flow cat installed instead which increases your chance of passing.

ok, thanks for the input! My dad took my other car for inspection to a friend of his last year while I was away at school. The guy has a pretty small shop and I was under the impression he wasn't too picky so mabye he would let me slide on this.

I've never had any of my non obd2 cars put on a dyno or sniffed. Remember emissions are county specific in PA

From what I understand, Berks County does not do a visual inspection. Get an O2 sim and you should be fine catless.

I had no idea emissions were county specific. I had a 3" cat-back with a 4" magnaflow muffler on my talon and my dad said the guy didn't even look under the car when he took it there. He did ask to take it for a test drive though, lol.

does the O2 sim just trick the car into keeping the check engine light off?

I'm running cats currently, so I can't answer that question as I'm unfamiliar with how it works exactly. Something to that effect though, I'm sure.

Yes. Which is great for OBDII cars since unless they do a visual, that's all they need. I dont know whether or not you'll need to pass the sniffer though, I've never had to deal with that. Best of luck!

where would I get an O2 sim? or is it something you can rig up yourself?

Pfft how about you stay under 5,000 miles each year and be emissions exempt. I do it...and the GSX is my DD!

what you could do is get a test pipe install it then when inspection time comes around u just swap out the test pipe for the cat then send it in for insp. then swap it back when u are all done
