I don't know much about the technical aspects of this car but I know what i want in a car and thiscar has it. I am looking to buy one and was wondering if anyone could tell me genral problems the Nissan 300zx might have or things to watch out for. Also any information about the aprts being very expensive to replace or hard to find would be useful as well. Thanks.

Well I will start off here. One the 5-speeds like to go through clutches like they are water. Especially if you beat on them. My girl has one and she had her transmission rebuilt not even replaced and it cost $4,600. Parts are pretty expensive and depending on where you live pretty hard to find.

Do all 5-speeds burn through clutches? or just the Nissans? And was that labor of 4600$ to rebuild clutch cause I have a brother who is a mechanic so service costs don't bother me too much. It's just geting the parts.

If you know you want the car, then go ahead and buy it. You'll find much better info on sites like www.300zxclub.com and www.twinturbo.net

That was labor and parts of $4,600 with most of the money being for parts!!! From what I have seen yes a majority of 300zx 5 speeds do go through stock clutches.

used 300zx TT tranny goes for around 400-600$ + a good clutch 350-500 so ur looking at about 1000 if it every goes bad
my TT tranny now has about 112k on it and still drives like a champ. i have gone trew 2 clutches so far. got the car with 82K on it changed the clutch cuz i wanted to it was not bad then changed it again at 90someting but thats cuz i bought the wrong "type" of clutch the 1st time i got a street clutch .. wen all i was doing was burouts and taking it to the track even tho it did last me about 20K and cost me $250 for the clutch put it in myself takes about 45 min. now i have a six puck clutch grabs alot harder then the 1st ight not last very long well it will last longer then the 1st prob around 20 to 25k i will be happy.... if u have any and i mean any questions about Z shoot me a pm i pretty much now almost everything

parts dont break unless you beat on them. z's are great cars. stay away from the turbo ones unless you wanna be doing work on it. people say the turbos last to about 100-120k and thats usually the mileage you'll find one with. and the fact that you have to pull the motor to change a turbo kinda sucks

so the turbo's go bad after 100,000 miles or so? Does that hurt anything else in the car when they break down? Like is it as bad as a timing belt breaking?

you will smoke like a bitch, burn oil and coolant like its going out of style, and not make boost. you can't drive the car around with a blown turbo. you have a good month or so between when you start to notice it going and when its dead, so its not like it's going to all of a sudden happen.

Aren't the super-hicas (sp?) 4 wheel steering model prone to excessive play in the geometry of thr rear suspension as well??

yea hicas is lame but easily disabled
z32 trannys are stout (much stronger than SR missions)
they're like any other turbo car, but they're a bitch to work on cus of no engine bay room.

These cars aren't as bad to work on if you have a person who knows what there doing. Yeah kinda sucks to change a turbo you have to pull the motor, but can easily be pulled in about four hours. But basic maitenance isn't hard to do imo.
My car has 117000 miles on it and my turbos are fine. I've been deeeeep into the twelves(12.2x +) many times and no problems.
Hicas sucks that's why in my tt I deleted that along with my power steering all together.
