I am an Engineer for the state of NJ. I received this e-mail today at 11:00 AM!
June 29, 2006
Dear DOT Employee:
If a state budget is not approved by the start of the new fiscal year on Saturday, July 1, 2006 Governor Corzine has indicated that most state operations will stop and only essential operations will continue. Previous designations as “essential” do not apply and only a limited number of DOT employees will be deemed essential should a State government shutdown become necessary.
These essential employees will receive a separate letter later this week. If you do not receive this letter, then for this purpose, you are not considered essential and you are not to report to work, unless otherwise instructed by management.
Sincerely,
Gregory B. Vida
Director, Division of Human Resources
I approve working bridge drawings for the state. I have yet to get a letter saying that I am an essential employee. Reguardless, as of monday I no longer have a job until further notice!!!!!

thats what i was thinkingA lot of larger companies that don't have work for people just lay them off while giving them unemployment. It's easier on the books and also easier to bring them back once work picks up again. If a whole slew of people get fired, then they have to re-hire a new staff, tons more paperwork and I9's, W4's, etc. etc.

No it's not...He still gets Federal taken out.

Will the state make you wait the standard two weeks before being able to apply?
Will the state have any "essential" workers to approve your claim?
Will the state be able to pay while there is no budget?
I would not plan on collecting anything in the near future over this. Plan accordingly.

I was just watching NJN and they said it is unlikely we will be back tomorrow and more likely it will go into next week, but that may just be hype. They also said we can put in for unemployment without the wait, only problem is the unemployment office is on a skeleton crew so you will likely get a buisy signal so apply online.

Looks like we are back to work Friday. They are also talking about putting through a bill to pay us for the time we were forced to take off but I have a feeling that won't happen.
