Anyone going?? Is there a good place to sit outside of the airfield to watch? I dunno if anyone else is going with me on sunday so I fig. If I can go sit somewhere it wouldn't be that bad. I have never been to a show there before only at Andrews Air Force Base.

I would suggest taking the back roads and avoiding the turnpike exit/entrance like the plague. Excess of 250,000 people this weekend...
Last I heard the Blue Angels will not be in attendance, but the Thunderbirds will..

No blue angels but there is a tactical demonstration from an F-15. I went last year and the F-16 doing the Demo was incredible. There is nothing like the sound of a pure jet at full tilt. Just plain awesome.

naa whats really awesome in miramar(san diego) during the air show. they were doing a deno and all of the sudden a b-2 stealth bomber came flying right over our heads in the stands.. it was awesome seeing that thing fly.. then seeing it up close.. great plane!
USMCEVO
06-16-2006, 02:03 AM
the b-2 is smaller than I thought. I saw one in guam. Its insane to think what that plane is able to do.
Hay anyone who is going to the show, can you keep the trash (F.O.D.) to a minimum. We'd all be very thank full on base after the clean up.

don't need perfect eyes to fly, your sight does need to be able to be correctable though.
Its the physical tests that are killer and that keep people from flying.
I'd join to fly, if I wasn't too old already.

went down today and had a good time. I sat in the regal cinema lot by cold stone creamery. Front row, little hot in the sun lol, but it was neat seeing all of the jets flying overhead.

I went too, and I was impressed. I was on the other side of the base next to the marrot hotel when the stealth bomber came by. I wish i was inside for that! Later on I drive around a went inside the base. You didn't have to pay a dime, and you were able to get good seats near the runway.

I'm not sure of military rules but the FAA says civil aircraft need to stay 1000ft above congested areas unless manuvering to land. How far away from the Grove do you live?
05Accent
06-21-2006, 01:59 AM
a bit far.. about an hour.. in san diego my grandmother used to work at miramar(where they filmed top gun, favoirte movie might i add) and was always at her work on the tarmac watching the aircraft take off land and all that good stuff. it was great..

well if you look at a map used for flying, the military has their own flight paths that your not allowed to fly in. And when your flying in non-congested areas such as in the mountains or open land without homes/businesses, you are allowed to go as low as 500ft. if any of you are pilots you would then know just how stupid it is to fly that low. especially in IFR conditions.
USMCEVO
06-21-2006, 12:38 PM
True they have thier own flight paths but who do you think approves them.

06-21-2006, 01:55 PM
I dont know fer sure but I would think FAA has to approve everything. Especially after Sept 11th. Obviously the there is airspace that they could do almost anything they want but thats where no one else can go. There are ranges out over the ocean were they can do ANYTHING.
05Accent
06-21-2006, 01:59 PM
how about say 2 f-18's go out for a traning run, and there within the limit of there base's airspace, the FAA has to know about it? or ok it?
USMCEVO
06-21-2006, 02:52 PM
There are not many training missions that an f-18 could do in the base's airspace. Just touch and go's or carrier quals. If its a maintenance flight check they could just hop in notify the tower and all they do is fly with-in the area. If they do go some where out side the base they have to file a flight plan. Im not 100% if they absolutly have to file one or not but ill go ask right quick tho.

There are several types of special use airspace where the military conducts flight activities. Alert, Restricted, Warning (off shore), Military Operations Area (MOA), Controlled Firing Areas (CFA), Military Training Routes (MTR) all of which are depicted on VFR secional charts except for CFA's. And yes scud running at 500ft VFR in IMC around here is plain dumb. Please do get back to us on the flight plan SOP for military flights. Thanks.

Ok, I just asked our Maintenance Officer. He said you dont have to file a plan if your VFR. He's a CH-53 pilot (chopper), so I asked him if he knew about fixed wing. He told me no but they always do anyway.

You ready...you asked for it?
Visual flight rules (VFR) are a set of aviation regulations under which a pilot may operate an aircraft, if weather conditions are sufficient to allow the pilot to visually control the aircraft's attitude, navigate, and maintain separation with obstacles such as terrain and other aircraft.
Pilots flying under VFR assume responsibility for their separation from all other aircraft and are not assigned routes or altitudes by ATC (outside of positive control airspace). They fly on their own using a "see and be seen" separation criteria. In busier controlled airspace, VFR aircraft are required to have a transponder. This amplifies the radar signal (as well broadcasting altitude level and a transponder code), and is used to allow controllers to warn instrument flight rules (IFR) aircraft of any potential conflict. Governing agencies establish strict VFR "weather minima" for visibility, distance from clouds, and altitude to ensure that VFR pilots can be seen from a far enough distance.
VFR pilots can request, and ATC can elect to provide "VFR Advisory Services," if the controllers' workload permits. This is also referred to as "Flight following." Under this environment, the controllers will radar identify the VFR aircraft and provide traffic information and weather advisory services for the VFR pilot. Controllers do not provide any instructions concerning direction of flight, altitude, or speed to the VFR pilot receiving advisory services, and they do not provide separation services. This is an optional service and may be discontinued by ATC or the pilot at any time.
The minimum meteorological requirements for VFR are called visual meteorological conditions (VMC) minima. If they are not met then the flight must be flown under IFR, the pilot must have an instrument rating and meet recency of experience requirements pertaining to instrument flight, and the aircraft must be equipped and type-certified for instrument flight. In some types of airspace, generally at higher altitudes, a flight must be flown under IFR regardless of the meterological conditions, as aircraft fly at high speeds at higher altitudes and the "see and avoid" method of avoiding conflicting traffic is less successful.
