Wilkie Chevrolet set up a new red Cobalt SS at Temple University yesterday for the Spring Fling. The car seems really nice on the inside and it looks like theres and empty spot in the engine compartment on the passenger side. IDK it just looked like wasted space. It looks like a sharp and quick little car I can't wait to test drive one.

Looks the same as the Saturn Ion Redline because it's the same car...only 2/10ths slower. (due to being made entirely out of metal and toting heavy as hell 18" rims, NOT because the engine is slower. Same engine, same body platform. Just weight.)

True but my whole life i have been raised to know saturns as a girls car so i wouldnt want to get a redline, i respect the power but not the look. Gotta respect the 18's on the cobalt. im still gonna test drive one.

Ouch...well, you ARE a chevy owner, so I guess that's not a big insult.

Yeah, bet the car is made Chevy quality too, if you're getting 135 bucks of free stuff. ;)

Cobalt looked Hot, The trunk is huge on that thing. Guess there is alot of room under that wing. I also was wondering about that spot. The wheels are hot, I wish they were chrome thought. Can't wait to see em in my rear veiw mirror when they hit the street.

I'd rather put the cobalt seats and gauge cluster into the RL, but whatever.

I might actually look into one of these slow things. They do look nice.

That big empty space won't suffice for a turbo, unless you get something like a T2Small or something with instaspool. Girly turbo.

Study the engine bay setup a bit, above and under, and see if you find the spot that a few of us have already found for the turbo to go.

BTW, I held in my hands the turbo psi-fi is using to twin-charge their Red Line. Expect to see some saturns in the area soon pushing some serious power ;) too bad I might not be one of them. Props to Rev It Up and Psi-Fi

I'm in the market for a new (or used, but new to me) car. I'd rather an 8cyl, or something RWD/AWD, but if it comes down to it, I'll be buying me a Cobalt SS. Very beautiful cars.

No problems with mine :) Other than the 2 recalls ( 1 for fuel rail and other for cam shaft pos. sensor) it's been a solid car. Gotta love the suicide rear doors

Cobalt SS - $20k - 22k

Both have same engine, Red Line is lighter... hmmmmmm

LSD > 14k 04 Redline.

SS looks better. Only plus the RL actually has is the lightness...and seats...and doors. I don't need to justify my choice.

SS looks nice... but it looks too much like a civic. LSD is available for the Red Lines through the dealer or Quaife. Same tranny as Saab 9-3 turbo (F35) Someone on RLF already got it installed in theirs.

The empty spot you noticed is probably because the battery is in the trunk like the Red Line ;)

I don't think that's the only reason, but it's probably the best. I honestly think that the 2.0 is relatively compact for a 4cyl (is that possible?), much like the 1.9LLO. It'd look even more uncluttered if they tacked up the wires and tubing more nicely and used the firewall to screw more stuff in (Ala LLO style).

I am not saying that its not true, but you are comparing the maxium price of the SS to the lowest price possible on a Red Line!

I think it would be pretty close if each car was equally equiped (LSD), and you talked a salesman down. Because GM has wayyy to many cobalts sitting on their lots right now.

I'm feel'n the Cobalt. Design wise, it doesn't look as "boy racer-ish" as it's competiters. A little bit more grown up...

The wheels really help make the design stand out also. True pimps ride on 18s.

how heavy on the wheels? anything over 20lbs would be ridiculous on such a small car...

I find it hard to believe that when running the same wheels the redline and cobalt are the same weight...

Cobalts are heavier than the Red Line

Red Line 17" Rims are Forged. Without tires they weigh 16lbs.

i'm just asking if it's the wheels that factor in the increased weight or maybe a stronger drivetrain piece?

Wheels partially. The car in general is made of metal, whereas the Ion is plasic.

oh yeah - forgot about that saturns are covered in rubbermaid...

from edmunds:
cobalt ss - 2991lbs
saturn rl - 2933 lbs

doesn't seem like too much of a difference when you factor in wheel weights and front lsd

It's not too much of a difference, this is true. THe LSD doesn't weigh that much more. It typically weighs about the same as a stock open diff.

But you have to think of the amount of power being lost trying to turn the tires. Bigger diameter and more weight is going to produce a negative effect on the overall movement of the vehicle. I bet if they dropped light 16's on to either car, you'd slam acceleration like no other. All in all, the cars would be fairly evenly matched with matching tires, however, purely for weight, the RL in the long run would pass by mere inches or so.

Using the numbers that SilverBullet posted you could put the LSD in the RL to put its price at 18 after warranty, still compared to the 22K for the cobalt. Thing is you won't see the cobalt drop in price I bet for atleast 6-7 months. Also I need to find the picture someone made up but the car looks to much like a civic. I perfer the look of my redline over the cobalt any day. I'll be getting the LSD installed just a little down the road as I don't have that money right now. These saturns will be pushing REAL serious power soon, I hope to be one of them just depends on money situation. Maybe g/f will help out :supz: on the official redline forums theres talks about once the smaller pulley kit from PSI-FI is on plus a few other little parts we'll be at 300-330 depending on conditions. Also I'm PROUD to drive a rubber maid rocket!! It's hottness. Also in my opinion I don't think you'll ever be able to beat the face of a ricer when they just get beat by someone in a saturn, a chevy they will probably understand but a saturn, NOTHING beats that face. It's one of those starts out with a big smile then when they see the license plate there face just turns into a blank expression then a slow WWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTT TEH F JUST HAPPENED?!?!?!?! then I do some of these :wiggle: :wiggle:   and laugh. Not saying I can beat you guys here cause your all dropping serious numbers with your mods but around my area there is A TON of ricers I play with all day :)

Silly 2002 Saturn L200 $17 and change
Wooden baseball bat $45

Has anyone seen the "sport compact build guide" that GM put out, complete with part numbers on how to build a 1000hp ECOTEC engine?

I've got it on my HD. 160page PDF document...more of a rough outline, but would be fun to try :)

Anyone else seen this?

According to the guide, if done properly, they'll warrant an at-home supercharger installation (done with GM parts & whatnot).

yes the site is www.gmtuners.com I've read the guide already I've been debating on how much HP i want seeing as THIS IS MY DAILY AND ONLY DRIVER! LoL I'll most likely twin charge it like the base kit that psi-fi puts out and thats about it I won't be going crazy, I'll be doing some visual stuff to as I'm more of a looks kinda guy but still with keepin it decently fast.
