I'm in the market for a truck/suv for my parents. Found something they like, went to take a look at it, and then started to do my research on the truck.
Its a 2003 GMC Envoy XL with 136k on it advertised for $4k obo. Truck looks good, runs good, all electronics work. Mom and dad like it, they can both drive it, sounds good. Guy tells me its an auction truck, and it had a no-start issue, so he had the engine replaced. (first red flag) He had the engine replaced with a unit over 100k miles, but has no paperwork to back up the replacement or the mileage claim (second red flag)
So, I get into my office the next day, and I decide to look up the vin number of the truck. Sure does turn out it was an auction truck. Was sold at a Copart auction in June as a donated vehicle, not an insurance vehicle. To my surprise, the truck is listed with 235,549 miles!!! Mileage listed on the auction sheet and a picture of the instrument cluster.
Call up copart, they confirm who the truck was sold to, and its the party selling the truck local to me, but weren't able to give me a final purchase price. Its listed as a clean title too.
Should I inform the local PD? I've read up a bit, and it seems that odometer fraud is a criminal offense.
