"A storm is coming…and it’s wearing a Honda badge. The Japanese auto giant looks to mount a massive sports car charge with its pint-sized S660, flagship NSX, and – surprise – an all-new S2000. Have we got your attention now?

Details are still a bit hazy and Honda hasn’t officially confirmed that latter statement as of yet, but we’d say chances are looking good. Here’s the real kicker; a report from the UK’s Auto Express indicates that this S2000 will be mid-engined, just like its stablemates.

Styling cues look on point with the NSX and the non-US market S660. The S2000 shares a similar elegant fascia, angled headlights, and familial profile. But the really good stuff is underneath its skin.

The S2000 is reported to pack the turbocharged 2.0L mill from the next-gen Honda Civic Type R – regrettably, another Honda that the US won’t get – that produces a staggering 350-horsepower. Performance looks to be nippy, with estimates of zero to 60 mph in a hair under five seconds, but unless this thing packs on the pounds, we expect that number to drop as the debut nears.

Additionally, due to Honda’s Formula 1 reengagement with McLaren for 2015, some of the hybrid F1 goodies are expected to trickle down into each of the road cars. How does 40 mpg sound?

If the reports are true, the Honda S2000 could launch in 2017 for a reported £35,000 ($59,000). That’s quite a lot steeper than the old model at $35,000 in 2009…but owning an everyday NSX is definitely worth it."

60k!?!?!?!? Who will buy that when a brand new Z34 is 30k and has similar power??

I am amazed that such a neat little car was not clear coated from the factory. Are they just being cheap or haven't they got the memo about CC? My boss had one and since I detail cars I was shocked when my rags were covered in red paint.

How are you comparing a mid engine, hybrid, turbocharged sports car to a fairly antiquated naturally aspirated front engine V6 that weighs 2 tons?

On that end, I'm excited to see Honda being interesting again, although I still doubt I will really ever be getting into the newer cars other than DDs.

the red s2000s have red paint in the clear coat, it's common for some red to appear on the pads when waxing.

I'm comparing a 2 seater RWD car to another 2 seater RWD car (though your argument is perfectly valid). I think at 60k, they are pricing themselves out of the market. People will look at Zs, MX-5s, FRS/BRZs before they consider a 60k Honda. If the Alfa Romeo 4C is in the same price range, I see people picking that over a Honda (though it has about 100hp less, it is just a beautiful car).

i agree, but in a sense it may be a market to something like an auidi r8 v8 or porsche 981 boxster? personally i think that if you have the money to afford a 60k car, than you probably wouldnt be looking at a z, mx5 or toyobaru?

35k price tag according to:

Honda wouldn't price it at 60k, that would put it out if its target audience.

Lol, yea that's more accurate. Everyone can only speculate at this point. I am sure Honda will price it appropriately.

Coming from 3 S2000's if they do make one and it looks like a mini NSX I am definitely going to get one.

At the pace that Honda moves a car from idea to concept on the show circuit to dealer lots I'll be driving a Jazzy before I'll be seeing the new S2000 at a Honda showroom.
