View Full Version : Could you all be on the lookout for a WRX?
sisforsurfing

I'm looking to buy a car, and wanted to know if anyone who reads this could look out for used WRX's in the general area. That sounds simple, but... I have to buy from a dealer (annoying reasoning behind this, but unfortunately that's the case). There's a wagon for sale in Newtown Square, but I'd rather find one locally and with less miles. Have ~15 thousand to spend, so if you guys see one around here (Langhorne, Feasterville, even Flemington areas), and could remember to let me know, that would be awesome.
If I can't find one in good shape I'll probably end up getting an SVT Focus or A4 (still great cars), but I'd still like to look a bit more.
Thanks!
Sincere

Oh man, I thought I had researched all the local subaru dealers. i didn't even know there was one in jenkintown! Thanks!
Glanzmann has exactly what I'm looking for (black wagon), but for $16,995. Oh well, haggling can be done.
If anyone has more cars and/or WRX haggling tips, please chime in.

Thanks guys! I found a silver 2002 sedan at a dealer off of i-95/Street Road, but for $18k!! I'm gonna go and try and beat the price down a few thousand, if that doesn't work I'll... keep looking. Maybe go private owner soon... can't yet though.

yeah, that's the problem I'm running into... when I do find one, it's priced more than a new SRT-4. And about 5k above what I can spend. Thanks for lookin out though. I was gonna "settle" and get a used Integra or Jetta, but I don't think I'll be as happy with them, so I'm gonna keep waiting until I find one.
chris, PM me your AIM name (or IM me), i'd be curious about that car. I assume it's private owner? But with warranty I might be able to go for it...

Yeah but he won't be able to get the 05 for 16K.
sisforsurfing
04-27-2005, 11:34 AM
Yeah, Colonial called me as soon as they got that '05 on the lot, but they want 21k for it! I could get them to 19, but that's still too high. I could go for $17,500 MAX if it were a beautiful car, but 19k is a lot of money.
I stopped at Autostrada the day they got it on the lot. It has 68,000 miles on it, and they're asking $16,600. A little high in both areas, but if I can't find anything in a few more weeks I'll take it for a test drive.
Thanks everyone, keep them coming!

1g WRX parked between Babylon and Keith Valley Roads on Horsham Road, Horsham, PA. I wrote down some info for you. It looked really sharp. I would buy it in a second if I had the cash. His number was 215-444-0552.
5-speed
really dark blue with spoiler
36K miles
Cobb Stage 2 thingie- 3" turbo back, piggy-back computer, cold-air intake, intercooler sprayer, other little stuff
IHI VF30 turbo
STi injectors
Unorthodox pullies
Alpine radio/speakers/other stuff and an XM antenna
dark tint
If you buy this car, I will envy you forever. It's really nice.

Thank you so much for taking down that info for me! Seriously, I've become so impatient with this search and it's only been about a month. I've had to stay from a dealer, but Cobb Stage Two/VF30 and reasonably low mileage is worth taking another shot at private owner. Do you know how much he is asking? I'll give him a call once I check out my dealer situation.
edit: I couldn't help myself from calling. He said he'd be willing to go down to 18k minimum, saying he's leaving the country in a little over a week. He also said it has the balance of the factory warranty, but I'm pretty sure that's pretty much gone with the mod list. Oh well, I doubt that one will work out, but I'll probably take a look at it.
...keep 'em coming if you see them!

Looking at this one on Saturday or before: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31868&item=4547783 962&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
I'm gonna try to use the vented HKS SSQV as a haggling point, as well as the exhaust. Is venting Scoobs bad, like with DSM's? Oh well, I really like the yellow, especially with the black wheels.

That and the fact that is doesn't have a spare. BEAT 'EM DOWN!!
TehWagon
05-05-2005, 12:09 AM
Hey if that doesn't go well, you can google something like '02 Subaru WRX' and get all the listings for sale, both from dealers and private. Just a thought.
sisforsurfing
05-05-2005, 12:18 AM
Can you really? I tried and just got a bunch of random stuff. That would certainly make this a lot easier.
And thanks for reminding me of the spare, I'd have forgotten to use that. I just need the ebay auction not the break the reserve by saturday and they're getting the beat down! What do you guys think of yellow?
TehWagon
05-05-2005, 09:44 AM
The yellow is cool as crap and not all that common = hotness in my book
MuddyREX

I like the later, brighter yellow. The pastel yellow on early WRXs is awful IMO.

2002=Blaze Yellow, the lighter color
2003=Sonic Yelllow, the darker "cooler" color.

Put a refundable deposit down on it today in hopes to go back with a friend Saturday. They're asking $19,xxx, so I'll probably start the haggling with 15k cash, stand firm for a while about the mods/spare, then see what they can do for me. Think it's possible for 16.5 max?
TehWagon
05-05-2005, 05:30 PM
That's gettin'em down quite a bit... my best advice to you is be willing to walk... if they see that you are serious they will probably go as low as possible. Good luck!
sisforsurfing
05-08-2005, 02:42 PM
So that, too, didn't work out. A combo of saturday being a bad day to car shop (it was mobbed), and a saleslady that knew nothing about cars and already had two sales lined up that day. She wouldn't let the price drop enough, so we walked. Thanks to my friends for coming along anyway.
Still looking, but am also starting to look at RSX Type-S's. I don't know if I can convince myself to get a FWD, n/a car (a honda) though. I'll see, if I can get a really good deal I might jump on it. Otherwise, keeping on the search for scoobs, might be able to go private owner soon.

sisforsurfing
05-10-2005, 11:51 PM
I think that's the one I went up to look at. Yellow '03, around 25k miles, black wheels, HKS SSQV. That's where I was on Saturday, you guys were REALLY busy, I was shocked. I got a tall lady that wouldn't go below 17.5k, she told us her boss "laughed at" our original 15.5k cash offer, so we walked. Something didn't feel totally right with the car, it wasn't holding max boost and a vacuum line to the vented BOV was dry-rotting (probably the reason), but I don't think she really cared/knew what I was talking about. If that car doesn't sell soon I'll probably be up again to take another stab at getting a better price.
If you have another '03 up there, I'll definitely come up again.

if u want it youll have to offer that because we own it for a little less than that 15.5 is more than 1000$ less, and i aint bull****in u bro im on ur side but thats honestly what the deal is i aint tryin to help them out they ****ed me on my 1st teg sale
Aaron
05-14-2005, 12:24 AM
Did you write that with a cell phone?
Aaron
05-14-2005, 12:36 AM
Here's my best guess: "If you would like the car, you'll have to offer that $17,500 because we own it for a little less than that. $15,500 is more than $1000 less than we paid for it; I'm not kidding either. I am on your side here, but we honestly can't go less than $17,500. I am not trying to help them out either because they screwed me on my first sale."
And obviously no offense to you Jinteng, but if a dealer paid over 16,500 for that on trade or at an auction, THEY deserve to be laughed at. I'd let them keep it and shove it somewhere dark.

i agree with you, i drove it yesterday and it didnt feel right i wouldnt even suggest buying it but i duno, i dont like the color either or the wheels i love gunmetals but not those wheels, so i think u should keep lookin but sorry

Thanks for the response, I would have said something sooner but I've been away.
I don't remember who I got as the salesperson. She was tall and had what I think was reddish hair? Maybe, don't really remember. She wasn't the greatest. Yes, the $15.5k was low, but I felt it to be in the ballpark to start, especially since it definitely didn't feel totally right. Thanks though.
I'm starting to look private owner. Does anyone know what the process is with transfering a Subaru (or any car) warranty? Going private owner will probably be a lot easier, and there are more out there, so if everyone keep their eyes peeled that'd be a big help. Dealers are still fine, but now I'm open to private owners too.
Aaron
05-17-2005, 04:55 PM
As far as I know, the warranty applies to the car (3/36k), not the owner. I think it only gets troublesome when you need to transfer an extended warranty.

05-17-2005, 11:26 PM
I can't believe this is going on four pages... haha...
Thanks for the replies Aaron. I already found a silver '02 wagon for sale by an older husband and wife, so private owner is definitely easier. Two (more) questions...
One, did WRX's ever come with leather? He says it has a "rare" leather interior, and I just thought he was talking the car up, then I realized I've never seen a WRX with leather.
And two, does anyone recommend paying a mechanic to come to check a used car out? I'd assume so... should I just pay a mechanic to come out or just check it all out myself and with some knowledgable friends?
TehWagon
05-17-2005, 11:43 PM
I'm sure if you ask nicely and buy them lunch, one or two of the knowledgable guys from tst will accompany you. Mike, Charles, Kyle, etc- they all know their stuff and know what to look for...
jinteg730
05-17-2005, 11:45 PM
Id say dont pay a mechanic, test it yourself and if u get anything feeling wierd about the car maybe contact a mechanic, but its an 02 and an older couple you said, i dont imagine uncle frank was down the races in the wrx wagon regardless of the trubo, those motors r pretty strong so i doubt ull need a mechanic, my guess is the ur older couple wanted a car with better gas mileage than an suv but wanted to fit their skis in it so they got the wagon plus the didnt want a fwd car so the wagon could fit the skis, plus didnt slide to bad in the snow with the awd and on top of that inside is nce and sporty so he loved it    :finga: buy it
sisforsurfing
05-17-2005, 11:49 PM
I'll probably set up something with them tomorow, since they say they have someone looking at it in the afternoon. He said it's his wife's and she's selling since she bought a Legacy since the WRX was too sporty. I'm not too worried she beat on it if that's the case :D Basically, if it doesn't sell tomorow, and it all checks out, it's mine.
...but I've been saying things like that for two months now. Thanks for putting up with me!

 :wiggle: :supz: :partyman:
I'm really excited, the search has ended. Turns out a family friend is a mechanic, so he came over, everything is perfect. They were asking $16k, got them down to $15.4, which I thought to be pretty reasonable for the car and condition. It's actually a 2003 (I thought it was an '02), silver wagon, black leather interior and alarm with 33k on the clock. They had all the records, and still has a good hunk of warranty left (for me to void anyway.)
So now I can show up to meets in something besides the white Volvo wagon, and start looking for parts I can't quite afford.
