2001 passat 1.8t help

My cousin just bought a 2001 passat 1.8T 5 speed. the car feels slow. it appears from reading that and cai isnt made or cost to much and that a chip is the best way to go. is there a place in the lehigh valley or close that can rechip his car? iim not sure if its a b5 or b5.5 idk,its a 2001, thats all i know. he runs 93 oct gas and mobil 1. everything else is stock. is a chip the best first mod?

If it was just bought I'd replace/clean some things right outta the gate:

Air filter
Fuel filter
Cabin filter
Clean air intake
Run chevron techron through the gas tank

Before you mod, get it up to par

we did a compression test and new plugs. the air filter we were going to replace it with a cai but didnt find on for that car. and he ran through servel tanks of gas. it runs good. do you run straight pipe right off the turbo and run a cat delete because it seems like that cat is in the way of performance.

Your best bet is to run a cat delete from the pulley directly to the cat. Then a dump tube on the throttle body or the A pillar. Once you double chip that car it will fly.

www.passatworld.com is your friend, TONS of good info there. Passat owners tend to be the older crowd so it's a mature audience with a lot of good technical info.

2001-2003.5 is B5
2003.5-2005 is B5.5
2006 is when B6 chasis begins

First thing I'd do is check for vac leaks. First mod should be a good tune up, new filter, plugs, oil change, etc.

Best chip imo for that car is apr. www.gopar.com, they usually have good sales during holidays so hold off till then. When you chip the car, you'll also want to upgrade the diverter valve.

Synthetic oil changes every 5k is a must on this car. They're known for having sludge issues. It might not be a bad idea to run some seafoam in case the previous owner wasn't as meticulous.

Lastly, these cars are known for having bad coilpacks, I would seriously keep an extra set in your trunk. Other known failures are ABS crapping out and torn cv boots. And t-belt should be done at 75k, don't wait till factory recommended interval of 105k.

if you want cheap parts, the forum I mentioned above has a huge classified section.

Filters are tricky, truth is there aren't many true cold air intakes for the Passat (where it draws air from the grill/lower fogs). Most are open air filters that sucks hot air near the turbo and you get worse performance. I would stick with the oe box and get a k&n or something - just make sure not to over oil the filter as that will mess with your MAF.

Best bang for buck though is to forget cat-back and go high flow cats. Straight pipe will cause a CEL so a 2-300 cell hfc will be your best option. If you insist on getting an exhaust, then I'd just go custom 2.5" piping with a glasspack somewhere in the middle.
