so tonight my buddy says "My iPhones camera is 3/4 of your camera you paid thousands for". i gave a mild chuckle wanting to just go ahead and tear him a new one, but instead i said, "take a picture of the house over there (9pm, real dark) and make it look like it's day time". he says "easy", takes out his iPhone and takes the picture, flash goes off:roll: and he looks at the result, argument ended.
he then followed up with, "well can you change the saturation in your camera?" again i chuckled and said "what does changing the saturation do?" "uhhh...." and again, argument ended.
not bashing the iPhones camera, which is awesome for a cell phone / P&S, but that fact that he said it was 3/4 my DSLR, let alone compared it to an DSLR gave me a good laugh. oh and he's got the set of "aftermarket" lenses you could buy for $80 or something and says "they take awesome pictures that compare or are even better then the pictures you take with the thousand dollar lenses you have".
now this kid is a huge apple fanboy and apple products is literally all he talks about, so i spared him on the bashing i could have given him.
anyone else have funny stores from people who think their cell phones/P&S take "amazing" photos and compare them to you DSLR?

the short answer no lol...
no, not at all. maybe 1/16th of the camera...
although, the 4s camera is pretty legit, if you don't have your DSLR handy:

The camera on the 4s is nice, if the light is just right, along with HDR mode on the pics can turn out pretty damn good:

I love my i-phone... and of course it's not as good as a DSLR, its a phone... i don't think that was apples intentions.... For a phone, what the camera is capable of is pretty good. Now what they need to do is build a phone into a 5dmkII, then **** will get gnarley. =)

Cameras are junk and a complete waste of money. Should not be bought for any reason. There is no such thing as a media professional, bodies depreciate in value so quickly they are financially considered liabilities. 90% of lenses are liabilities as well.
Did I undermine your need to justify your camera purchase yet?

the camera can pull of simple snap shots, but if you wanted something creative or worthy of having a poster size print made, you should use real equipment. the picture posted isn't bad, but what you could pull off with a dslr and manual controls, would just make it that much better and worthy of showing off.

"if the light is just right", very good point. if it ware anything at night, with out manual controls and just the little led flash, any picture would be worthless (like the one my friend tried to take). the picture you posted is a perfect example of what you could use the camera for, out doing something where lugging a dslr around would be annoying/dumb and the reason behind the photo is simple memory purposes, your not gonna use that picture for print or to sell it, but it could be posted on FB or say "check out the fish i caught the other day", the camera is perfect for that.

never said apple was the one who said the camera was 3/4 my dslr, it was my friend who is an apple fanboy. he's the type of kid that has camped out the past 3 iPhone releases and has both an iPad 2 and 3, oh and no job. and you mean 5dmkIV*

^ Yes exactly Saab93Aero. I use my iphone now instead of a simple point and shoot like my olympus stylus tough 3000. Neither of them can shoot as well as a dslr. I bought that digi cam like 2 years ago just because it was waterproof so I can take it outdoors and still have a few options and settings to use. I bought a lifeproof case for the iphone and it works pretty damn good, though I have not used it for under water shots yet.

I took a picture of my friend's Lamborghini Aventador the day he got it with my iPhone 4S and he claims to this day that it is better than the professional photographer's shots that he hired for a shoot. I don't know about all that, but it did come out pretty nice. I guess the bottom line is that an idiot can take a better picture with an iPhone than a DSLR since its foolproof. If you know what you're doing however, a good DSLR with a quality lens will always be superior.

exactly... wish i had my D3100 with me at the time but i don't bring it with me to work on a regular basis. luckly i had the 4s to at least get a pretty decent shot.

You have to remember too....not every schmuck with a DSLR is a photographer.... Sure, they may call themselves that....but yea notsomuch. Takes more than a good body and lens...it takes talent and knowledge of exposure and composition...something I see a lot of "photographers" don't have.

this is true too, most of the photography work i personally do is with high school sports and some of the "soccer moms" with cameras i come across is just funny. granted the main reason they are taking the pictures is for simple memory purposes (which takes away from some of my sales) and for their kids friends to share on FB , but to see them on the sides lines with their 18-55mm kit lens, on a monopod and flash firing, on a bright and sunny day, gives me a good laugh.
oh, but don't forget, even person with an iPhone IS a Photographer:wink:

Now I don't own a DSLR, but this just bothered me for some reason. Your car is a liability. Your house is a liability 90% of the time. Pets are a liability. If you ever have kids, they are a liability. Yes, Cameras too, are a liability. Almost everything you purchase will depreciate in value. How does anything you said make cameras junk and a waste of money?
