Years ago, I used dyno software that used data recorded from a wire hooked up to a timing light sensor which was hooked up to the spark plug wire or data from the tach signal. The results were very consistent and when you did have all the environmental data correct it read within 5% of a dynojet on SAE settings. Unfortunately the web page of the creator isn't around any more and its no longer available for download.
I can imagine that this AEM driveshaft dyno is very convenient and if you have your environmental info correct and a level test area, its must be very accurate.

Wouldn't this throw off the balance of the driveshaft?

Not if the unit itself is balanced.

When we spoke to our AEM rep they said the majority of people using this are track guys trying to dial things in or doing shakedown's on car's that they are still working on.
Not your average street/tuner.
There's a more in depth write up in regard's to this here:

Cool idea though.

Stupid. If you constantly make changes and know how to tune yourself this would pay for itself after a while.

You don't need a dyno to tune if you know how to tune.

you shouldnt always have to retune or make adjustments unless your one of those that like to go through motors.

$1500 does buy a lot of dyno time. If the unit is easy to install and remove, it can be used on multiple vehicles. So if you are a tuner that basically tunes one type of car, it may be cheaper than buying a dyno.

tuning on the street is cheaper than tuning on the dyno till someone gets caught or possibly killed. derps.

Yea because you can't tune a car on a highway.
Many of the issues with tuning cars aren't full throttle 4th gear pulls. Its driveability issues. Those can be worked out at safe, legal speeds on the street.

this product is intended for people that actually race their cars (and make adjustments at the track), not the hard parkers of tst.
