Hey guys, i just recently bought an 03 mustang GT and im having some concerns with the trans. Its a TR 3650 and im experiences clunking coming out of 1st going into 2nd...and sometimes going into 3rd. Usually it wont do it if i shift out of 1st and go into 2nd roughly around 1800 rpm's. I have to shift out and let the rpm's drop before trying to get into 2nd, otherwise it'll clunk but does go in. Ive been doing some research and have found that alot of other people are having the same issues and are resovling it with replacing the trans fluid to get better smoother shifting. Im on here wondering if anyone has any aditional info/ advise for me as to how to resolve this.

Most of the S197 Mustang owners have had good experiences with GM Syncromesh fluid or Mobil1 Synthetic gear oil in the newer TR3650's.

Does it just make noise or is there another issue? How old is the clutch?

Clunking? Sounds more like a sound that a rear would make.

ok well to start off i did this on my phone and i meant clashing (grinding) not clunking...damn auto correct lol anyways...i looked up the tsb's and the one that is posted for the 3650 has to do with exactly when im experiencing. To fix it, its saying to get a sync kit and replace the 2nd main gear the forks and syncs...and a few other things. Some guys ive heard from, the issue was fixed with getting the syncmesh fluid. The place i bought it from gave me a pretty good powertrain warranty with it and everything the tsb is saying needs replaced is covered on the warranty. So idk if i want to go back and see how they can help me...or buy the sync kit and do a old "do it yourselfer" at work.

The first thing I would do would be to get some fresh fluid in the trans and diff. Then I would bleed the clutch. Also check your shifter, make sure not bolts came loose or anything.

One other thing... is your car warmed up before your banging through gears?

sorry for the miss-post. Also today i put some synchromesh fluid in today at work. I let the car run for about 5 or 10 mins and let everything get warmed up. Took it out in our test drive area and there was no grinding. 2nd gear engaged smoothly and promptly. But im also keeping it in the back of my head about doing a rebuild...just to stay safe. The fluid exchange may just be a temporary fix for now, but who says there really isnt somthing worn and going wrong in there that is just being covered up by the synchromesh and could probably fail later on down the road. lol

There is a good chance it was just simply 9 year old trans fluid. I wouldn't worry too much about there actually being an issue with the trans. They are fairly problem free.
