I have someone interested in trading me an 01 b5 Audi S4 for my cobra. I've always liked the cars but don't have much experience with them. I know they can be pricey to maintain. Things like the turbos or a clutch job (though this ones an auto) requires the motor to be pulled. Just looking to get some feedback and maybe a few tips of what to look for when i look it over this weekend. TIA for the help

You may have better luck in the general auto or Audi section. I have no specific experience with them, but I've heard bad things about the turbos as well. Also, that maint. on them, like you said, suck for even the simplest job.

I would check on vw/Audi forums. But you are right, they are on the pricey side if something were to break or need to be replaced. But if they are properly maintained, I wouldn't hesitate to trade.

Def. check out Audi and S4 forums... tons of info out there, but I've heard the same from a few owners I used to know, the turbos are awful and around 100K require to be replaced on pretty much every S4. And yes that requires pulling the motor... not too mention typical repairs/maintenance is $$. If that doesn't bother you, then they are totally worth it, awesome cars.

Most of the B5 s4's now a days have high miles and have been beat to death. With any german car if things go wrong its going to be a lot more expensive to fix then your cobra or a jap car. I have had mine since new but have less then 30K miles on it so I can't really speak to problems since it is has such low miles. Has the car been chipped and modded? The motors are pretty reliable its sensors and other crap that will go bad on them. Check out audiworld.com that has a wealth of info.

stock k03's wont last 100k miles. and most of them nowadays are high mileage it seems..
www.audizine.com read all you can
I worked at a notable VW/Audi/Porsche tuner for 3.5 years so I have a decent amount of experience with them.
While I worked there I was choosing between a B5 S4 and an E36 M3. I ended up going with the M3 because compared to the S4 it was cheap to maintain (never thought I'd say that about the M3).
If you get the S4 and it's on original turbos/clutch I hope you have a few grand in the bank that can be dumped into the car. Sure the car as is might be fine for a while, but it is (at its newest) a 10 year old performance car now. Parts break/need to be replaced and its expensive to do. Turbos, clutch, downpipes and some other jobs all require the motor to be pulled, like others have mentioned. Sweet cars but too much money to run for me.

Lol, more like 30-50k... If your lucky. We went through 3 turbos in one and a half years. Would have been cheaper just to do k04's.
