requirement:
automatic transmission
higher ride height than most sedans.
easy to park in the city(small)
would be great but not necessary:
4 doors
4x100 wheel bolt pattern
parking sensors or rear camera
I'm thinking a honda fit or toyota yaris.
I'm not sure which cheap cars have parking sensors or rear cameras. Does a mazda 2 have them?

i dont think any of those have parking sensors. However, they all fit that profile.
Pick an older, cheaper, reliable car though. Older will be cheaper to insure, cheaper to purchase, cheaper to maintain, and you(or whoever) wont care as much if a 5k car gets smashed up as much as a 10k+ car gets smashed up.
Craigslist find an older honda/acura.

New driver and newer car is just a statistic for an accident. Just get something cheap. Doesn't really matter what it is.

Why would you ever drive a car in a city without complete coverage anyway... Always spring for the best you can.

You can install parking sensors in any vehicle (clean install - looks factory). As well as a rearview camera (although it's a ****ty bolt on camera with a suction cup screen...)
I'd say a cavalier. Just so any damages (if any) happen from lack of experience - they wouldn't be on a brand new car that would be jumping insurance cost as is.
If indeed you want a brand new car for whomever is receiving said car (if not yourself) Why not make a poll of the cars you're considering and have a vote?

alright that was a vague statement, hondas are prone to theft in the city, i think the real question is whats your budget?
