Thanks guys!
it hasn't been an easy car to mod as aftermarket options are slim at best and what is out there blows up a budget pretty quick.
next step is SPEC 2+ and SMF. parts are ~$1500 + book time is 10 hours labor (i do not have the skill set to do this myself <sadface>).
rolling quarters as quick as i can.....

Got a vid clip of the exhaust?

The only video I have at the moment is one of the dyno pulls. I really need to do a drive by and rev video. Exhaust is probably very subtle compared to many on here but i really like that about it. The turbo does like to scream though.

@ k Marsha - I gotta find those run sheets. Iirc the torque jumped to over 300 at like 2200 rpm...

I like that intake ducting!

I plan on doing something similar but havent gotten to that point... May be scoping out your car at lunch

Slasher
11-28-2011, 04:31 PM
Thank you K-Masha.

ducting was from an early Y2K NSX performance parts company called RM Racing. i do not believe they are in business any longer. The outside of it is a "clothlike" material and the inside is coated and ribbed with wire for bendability.
it basically feeds into the plastic intake piece under my hood (see horn relocation pic - snorkel piece with the jegs sticker) which shoves the air into the intake box.
May eventually replace the box with CCI but thus far testing indicates box with sport filter is ideal over CCI (and def HAI...errr....cone filter) until jumping up to K16 or similar.
whatever route i may or may not end up doing...this cold air collection apparatus will remain.

IIRC - there were only a few thousand M66 v50's sold in NA. probably >200 AWD T5's. add in the Flint Gray color and she is a pretty rare bird. of course as stated previously this makes modding....a bit difficult. but the flipside is it makes it a pretty unique car. since i pulled the badging off most people have no clue what it is.

Dyno info:
AWD Mustang dyno. temp: 80's.

The dyno showed steady boost of 18-19 in the two 4th gear runs and 19-20 (blipping 21) in the single 3rd gear run. the AF numbers under WOT were mid 11's to low 12's.
on the first 4th gear run the results were 243 WHP @ 333 # ft of torque.
The second run in 4th gear the numbers fell off (heat soak).
Took a few minutes to cool down and then did the final pull in 3rd gear.
325 torque and 253 WHP.
note: all sheets say "run 1" as i had them all printed separately.
here is the 3rd gear graph which was really "run 3":
http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n637/slasher9/dyno0033rdgear.jpg

I had forwarded the results to Peter @ Autotech to see if there is any tweaking to the Tune that he can do based off of them. he basically called me crazy in swedish (wait...is swedish a language??) and said tune is optimized for all my goodies.

sidenote: tuning on these engines / computer systems (ME-9) is probably not what you all are used to. there is no "user side" tuning available. There are a number of companies out there that have invested (see: $$$) into the software and perform the tunes (IPD, Autotech, Polestar, RICA, ARD) and provide via softloader or disc. files are tweaked (based on bolt on upgrades, fuel change, turbo upgrades) and updated over the net and loaded via OBD port.

is autotech the same tune as elevate? my buddy has a t5 awd s40 and it seems like thus far everything he's bought for it's a complete waste. He has an eurosport turbo back that's barely louder than stock and made essentially no difference performance-wise. He bought the Elevate springs and they lowered the car a 1/4'' so we ended up cutting the crap out of them to make it sit right instead of blowing $1700 on KWs that still don't go low.

Is the tune worth it or should we just get him on another platform? Quite frankly i think the car's a complete dog... My bone stock mk6 GTI pulled him by 2 cars no problem. What made the biggest difference for your car?

Slasher
12-11-2011, 10:58 PM
Elevate gets their tune from autotech, so it is one in the same. Obviously I have done a lot to my car, but before I did a single mod I certainly wouldn't call the 2.5 liter t5 engine a dog.
Personally I did all the bolt on and engine upgrades prior to the tune so I went directly to a stage III tune when I finally did the software. Of course this made a huge difference when loaded. But every step of the way I noticed improvements.
As stated in earlier post I could care less about a loud exhaust, I am more interested in free flow without waking the neighbors or giving 5-o yet another reason. Just looking at the difference in muffler size you can see the est is an improvement over stock exhaust. The gains will be more noticeable with increased front end flow (larger dp).
Is your friends car an automatic? Is there any boost issues or Vac leaks? The stock tcv's on the p1's are notorious for needing replacement. If your buddy does decide to get tune I would strongly recommend upgraded fmic & dp as the stockers are fine for stock boost but inadequate when tuned. The heat will kill. Have him shoot me a pm if any questions and I'd be glad to try and help. It's not a cheap car to mod and for the $$ to do it he can get a Honda, volks, or similar and mod much cheaper for much higher gains. This is not a knock on any of those cars but the point of modding a car from Sweden is it's uniqueness while still retaining some creature comforts.
I got about 1-1/2" drop on my eibachs and still have a gap. The elevates are supposed to be similar drop. Really the gap we are starting with is enormous as these are awd cars. The only way to get low is the kw's.

clubken
12-11-2011, 11:20 PM
He has the eurosport 3'' DP now, but still the stock intercooler. I think his next step is going to be the tune then an intercooler. I sent him a link for the one that you have. I guess I shouldn't say it's a complete dog, just doesn't move like i expect it to for a 5 cylinder turbo (yes, it is manual). It seems like it completely runs out of steam at like 5000ish. happen to have any videos of yours?

Slasher
12-12-2011, 11:05 AM
only video i have at the minute is one on the dyno.
the stock k04 turbo does run out of breath around the 5000-5500 rpm range. The torque on these is beast though. obviously upgrading to k16 will completely eradicate any issues but i'm not sure what your friend has in terms of budget $$$. k16 will run about $3k just for the turbo. not easy to get either, last one that came to states Borg snapped up for internal R&D. but the k16 is basically a bolt-on system with only slight work to be done on oil lines.
if he gets tune prior to upgraded FMIC (and he plans on getting one in the near future) - have the tune written for it as this will save him a couple hundred $ as he will not have to have the tune updated.

Slasher
12-13-2011, 06:45 PM
Horsepower = torque*RPM/5252

5252 is the sum of all conversions.
1hp = 550 ft-lbs/s
1rpm = 2pi radians/60 seconds
550*60/2pi = 5252

this is why torque and hp will always cross on every dyno graph at 5252....

def post up some pix of the R and the bits that you have modded. people on swedespeed are always parting out R's so you can probably find some good deals there if you are looking for any upgrades. i know the clutch slave is notoriously bad on the R's. there may have been a recall fix?

swevo
12-19-2011, 03:16 PM
There may have been a recall before I got it, I work for a dealer so any kind of recalls or warranty work is done almost instantly for me. As of right now all I have done is a 3 inch downpipe doth cat delete, ipd hp turbo control valve, ipd boost gauge, k&n intake, no resonator, full tint, blacked out tail lights, and I think that's it. I need a tune but that's coming soon along with some other cosmetic stuff. I have to say the m66 is alot nicer then the other trannys in other volvos your lucky you have it. I can't imagine not having it in my car.

Slasher
12-21-2011, 11:02 AM
nice upgrades. i think you would be very happy with a Tune written for them. Personally i would definitely recommend the Autotech tune thru Elevate. Don has always been very helpful and the Tune itself has run flawlessly. Plus it's written with the 2nd o2 sensor delete so you wont get annoying CEL.
If your CBV is anything like the one in mine you may want to look to upgrade that to the Forge valve. the stocker is cheapy plastic with rubber while the forge is steel with spring actuation. holds the boost more better.
also when i swapped out my FMIC to the Bell unit, i was surprised how small and limp the stock unit was. serious upgrade potential there as well. and if you are tuning you def want to keep ish as cool as possible.

Found a guy with a S60r selling a SPEC clutch and single mass flywheel.
get the parts, have them installed and lo and behold.....complete slip in 3/4 throttle 3rd, 4th, 5th...didnt even bother with 6th.
me = stupid. lesson learned....once more.
so today i placed order for brand new SPEC stage 2+ clutch, SPEC SMF, flywheel bolts, and transmission fluid.
I have reached out to the seller and am hopeful he will do the right thing. otherwise i am destined for paypal dispute court.
yes, i know i am an idiot.

ok, so i had a SPEC clutch nightmare. Basically unbelievably annoying Squeal as i slip into 1st or R and also on downshifts.
long story short - SPEC SMF & Clutch/PP have been pulled and stockers have gone back in. SPEC will be receiving a package from me shortly for "evaluation".
I took some pictars of the parts that were pulled and will post later.
Anyways, thankfully the OEM is not slipping at this point. i have done some pretty decent 3rd and 4th gear pulls (20psi) with no slippage. i have yet to "launch" first but fingers crossed i will be ok.
My plan was to jump to a K16 upgrade but without having performance clutch in this plan is on indefinite hold. Currently SPEC is the only aftermarket offering for P1 AWD so i am dead in the water.
more importantly - my car is driving and sounding GREAT again so i am happy.

Looking for a set of 19" Heico wheels so please hit me up if you see any for sale.
Next up - Rear slotted rotors, spacers (15mm rear, 5mm front), SS brake lines, poly bushings.....

how long did it take you to get your elevate tune? my friend ordered the tuner and had it within like 2 days, but it's been two weeks now and they still have no ETA on when the tune is going to be done. He paid for second day air so he could have the tune for last weekend because Elevate does not specify the tune is not preloaded or available for download once received.

Slasher
04-27-2012, 03:07 PM
Hey clubken. My tune was available for download pretty soon after i received the softloader via UPS. maybe a couple days or so.
i'm assuming he got the softloader? tell him to plug it into his PC and follow the steps to load the tune to the softloader. it may already be available.
I know that Peter (Autotech in Sweden / writes the tunes) has been hard at work on the K16 turbo upgrade tune so not sure if other stuff has been delayed.
but it would be worthwhile to plug it in to PC and follow the steps as it may be available.
The tune itself really transforms the car. your friend is about to be very happy.
I'm assuming he already reached out to Don @ Elevate but multiple phone calls / emails might help. I have had zero issues but many say his customer service is meh...

clubken
04-27-2012, 08:06 PM
Yeah we connected it to the computer the day he got it an they had not even begun working on his tune. They sent one for download the other day with his correct vin but it wasn't even programmed for his ecu type or something. Going on two weeks with emails every few days. He ordered their short runner and if it's nearly as much of a hassle as their crap lowering springs and this tuner have been then it's going back.

Hoping to get it on the R/T Mustang dyno to get the numbers. i have two separate sessions with nearly identical numbers from previous runs so it would be interesting to see if the open filter really offers any power gains to the wheels.

Put in the new headunit. I'm sure some of you will probably think an aftermarket screen/dvd player looks tacky but it was a hand-me-down from a friend and free parts are free parts, sounds way better than stock.
Map sensor should come by Friday and then it's time to look for new springs. Would ideally like to get new coils all around so I can lower the whole car but right now my main concern is just fixing that rear.

Very nice to see some other volvo owners here. I have a 97 850 GLT with 93K. For those of you who dont know, that is the LPT model. I have a ton of parts waiting to go on, most of which that will this week. I have a genuine volvo PCV kit, silicone IC hoses, Snabb inlet pipe, NA throttle body with 960 throttle plate and a 15g turbo i rebuilt to replace the smaller 15g and a 3" OBX downpipe I just bought. The car should be running only about 6psi as is. Once all the parts go on and an exhaust is welded onto the downpipe and I get 315cc injectors. I am going to get a flash tune from ARD lastly. This will up the boost to about 14-15psi. Should make a fun car, the 2.4 LPT is more torquey than the 2.3 HPT engine which is good. Then off to cosmetic parts.... I will post some more pics once I get some more work done! Thanks!

That is one clean looking 850. Really like it!

Spent my easter weekend swapping out the automatic shift knob for the wood grain one.

Before:

After roughly an hour of fighting with the center console:

And roughly 3 hours after the project started:

With the majority of the interior swapped for the wood trim options it finally feels less cheap inside.

Looks nice man. Dont they always make the center console the biggest pain in the ass to get apart? Lol

I think they figure that no one in the right mind would need to remove the center console unless there was a problem so big that the car would have to be taken to a shop/dealership.

I haven't been in the right mind for a while though...

If you're interested, I have a set of 16" 5 spokes with summer tires I would be willing to sell for quite cheap.
