anyone have any information on the legality of turbo engine swaps? i'm becoming attatched to my car, but i want it to be a little quicker, so i was thinking about putting doing a BP-T swap (i've got a 95 escort lx). should i just stop wasting time thinking about it and find a real car? i want to keep my car legal for as long as possible, 'cause its my only rid to college and back http

by the time you get situated with the things you want the HP and effort in finalizing the project won't yeild the results your looking for. Definitely save up and find a car that has a more beneficial platform for boost.

If you plan on completely building this engine up from soup to nuts then I'd say the sky is the limit however if your on a budget I'd just save up and buy a turbo.

then again its all about indiviuality.. i personally think id be sweet to see a turboed escport.. something u dont see everyday.. so depends on how u feel about ur car.. so id say go for it, if you really wanted...

As far as the legality, I think that it is legal to put a motor in the car that is the same age of the car or newer. I may be wrong though.

just turbo your current engine.

If you want a little bit more power then add a supercharger to it.

Otherwise you never want to add too many mods, parts or power to your one and only ride.

Superchargers won't give you the most power but they are simple bolt ons.

Bah! What is a real car? No matter what you do to any car there will always be someone out there that will say "for the amount of money you spent on that car you could have bought XXXXX car". In the end do what makes you happy. You will learn more about your car and obtain mroe skills by turbocharging or swapping another motor into your current car.

I think your car had an OBDI computer since it is a 95. If that is the case then you should check what type of emissions testing that your car is required to pass in your area. If you just have to pass the tail pipe sniffer, then you should be good to go. Other then that I don't really think you have to worry about getting stopeed by the police for modifications such as motor swaps or turbo kits.

Dynamometer, Visual Check and Gas Cap Check are the inspections i'd have to go through where i'm at, but i'm not 100% if it will pass legally or not. since all the searched for parts would be on the motor
* Catalytic converter
* Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
* Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve
* Fuel inlet restrictor
* Air pump
* Evaporative control system components such as vapor canisters and lines.
the swap should not be a problem. however, it seems as though they check other things. The certified technician will determine if the devices are properly connected and if they are the correct type for the vehicle being inspected. i guess that means the mazda valve cover would have to be replaced with a ford one? anyone here do inspections in PA?

(mazda BP-T is just a turbo/awd version of the escort gt version. same block and cylinder head and everything, except the transmission was for an awd car)
