Hey all... I was under the (mistaken, apparently) impression that the eclipse did not come in a 'spyder' version till the 3rd gen body style. A coworker is looking into getting a 2g body style, and it has a 'spyder' emblem on it. It's a 97, with 64k miles, so that's pretty good, but I was just curious if this was a rebadge or if they def did come in spyders? She says its turbo'd, but what else comes with the spyder package? Is it awd?
Thanks guys. Sorry I am un-mitsu-educated!

2G's came as spyders, and also GS-T (front wheel drive turbo) spyders, but there were no GSX (AWD Turbo) spyders made.

thanks - so if it's badged a spyder and not GS-T then it might not be turbo'd?

The spyders were simply the convertibles, which came in different trims just like the hardtop, correct?

Although the spyders didn't come in AWD there are at least a half dozen around the country that have been converted to AWD.

didnt the N/T come with a 2.4 at times?

If they did it would be a chrysler motor. IMO, the only motor worth looking at is the 4g63. Some might think I'm a little biased.

All the N/T Spyders came with a 2.4L. Also, don't knock that 2.4 just because its a Chrysler/Dodge motor. They have been used to run some pretty sick times all motor in a first gen neon.

People use the 2.4's on the spyders for cranks on a build up.

LoL wow, oh and from what I recall though I could be wrong lol is isn't the 2.4L in all the 2G spyders? Also aren't they non turbo 4G63s? Meaning you could slap a turbo kit on it easily?

ERRRR EDIT: just found out it is a 4G64 motor......does that mean its got smaller rods and stuff?

Spyder means convertible in Eclipses. They had 2G Spyders from 96-99. They came in two trim packages: GS and GST. The GS came with a SOHC 2.4L 4G64 non-turbo engine. The GST came with the same 7 bolt 4G63T that the standard 2G GST and GSX's came with. Both of these engines are mitsu engines and both are very strong blocks and cranks.

Some people use the 4G64 crank to build stroker 4G63T motors.
