View Full Version : How do you pronounce these companies names?
Why is it so confusing to pronounce most aftermarket autoparts companies names? It seems that no matter where I go, I run into someone who pronounces a name completely different than I do. Here is how I pronounce some hard to figure out ones.
Tein (rhymes with PINE?) heard it pronounced TEEN before, also TANE
Greddy (rhymes with EDDIE) also pronounced gee-ready, or GREEDY
A'Pexi (no idea) EY-PECKSI?
Defi (sounds like Defy) also have heard DEFFI
Gruppe-S (GROUP S) also heard Group-ay es or GRUPP ES
Mugen (MOO-GEN) also heard as MYOUGAN or MUJEN or MYOUJEN
Dinan (DEENON) also heard as DEENIN
Ecu-Tek (E.C.U. TECH) also heard ECOOTECH
maybe these are lame, but I always feel like an idiot when someone tells me I am pronouncing these names wrong. So whats the right way?

A'pexi is pronounced A'pex with no i
Defi from my understanding is pronounced deaf-eye
Dinan is die-nan
Ecutek is E.C.U. tek like you had it.
I think everything else is cool, lol i still have no idea about the gruppe-s one still, always wondered about that one.

had no idea there was no I in A'Pexi

I have had a couple people say G-ready to me a couple of times lol. I found Greddy is pretty easy. TIEN is a little tricky, but I know someone who called thier phoneline for the message and they pronounce it TANE

Right or wrong this how I say them.
Tein (Tea - En) I've met people with that last name and that is how they would say it.
Greddy (Gredd - ee)
A'Pexi (A - Pex - ee)
Defi (??)
Gruppe-S (GROUP - S)
Mugen (Mou - gen)
Dinan (DEE - NON)
Ecu-Tek (E.C.U. TECH)

Nissan. Knee-san or Niss-an?

I get confused when I watch any of the BestMotoring videos.

From my knowledge and experience this is how these ones go.
Tein = Tane
GReddy = Greddy
Defi = Deffy
Gruppe-S = Grupp Es
Mugen = Moo Gen
(gen is pronounced like ten, and the G isn't pronouced like a J)

That must be why Myles (Racecomp Engineering) didn't know what I was talking about when I wanted a set of En-key's. I've been calling them that for so long, I don't think I'll be able to break the habit. :rolleyes:

I think a lot of people say G READY because its technically spelld GReddy..the first two letters are capitalized like the G is an initial.

More like "Niece-san", with the s sound at the end of neice dragging into the san. It is Japanese, after all.
It's much like nii-san, meaning older brother. Or nii-chan for being less informal. You could do onii-ue if you wanted to be formal...abd both nii's could also be onii.
Anyway, yeah, that's how it's pronounced.

I think this company got their name from Titanium-Aluminum periodic symbols merged together, hence the capital "A"

Tein is Japanese, so the correct pronunciation of "ei" is "ay", or "eh-ee". So Tein = Tane or teh-een
Gruppe-S is a California based company who spells their name with a pseudo-european spelling. Gruppe-S = whatever they say it is, but probably Groop-ES'
Falken = Fall'-kin, not fal-con (like the bird)
König is German for "king" and the umlaut over the "O" makes the pronunciation something like "eurh" So König = keurh'-neeg
Kumho is South Korean, and I dont speak Korean, but I have always heard it said koom'-oh
Mugen is a word of Japanese origin, meaning dream, fantasy, (夢幻) or infinite (無限). "G" in Japanese is always hard, so Mugen = Moo-Gen
Now, whether, or not these companies pronounce their names like this, I don't know, but I believe these would be proper.

I know how people are trying to write Mugen, but people are gonna see gen and think jen.
Like Cabra said, Japanese always has hard sounds, while Chinese is more like a shh through their sentences.
So think moo-gain (pronounced like "again").

an update to this I was reading an old issue of SCC and in one of the columns they said 'No Tein, No Gain'....which would imply you are right, its pronounced like TANE.

kumho is korean so i bet they meant to say KOM (mixed between KUM and KUUM) and ho is not like HOE but more like the o in told.
mugen is MYOO JEN from what i remember
and isn't tial pronounced TILE?

Mugen (MOO-GEN) yep That is what I have heard from groups they sponsor

Ecu-Tek I think it's ECKYOO TECH
Tial is not TILE, but TIE-UHL, nit picking I know, but slight difference. I have one of their Wastegates.
