Flash modifiers

I just ordered a Lumiquest Quick Bounce so I can do some club photography. It was either this or the Gary Fong Lightsphere, but based on the reviews the GFL does not work well unless you have walls and ceiling right near you.

I have a gary fong lightsphere and the Lumiquest 80-20 pocket bouncer. I find myself using the fong more often just because the 80-20 looks like a damn lacrosse stick when it's on the flash. Both get the job done.

It bounces flash light onto your subject, so it's much softer and more natural looking than just pointing the flash at the subject.

It has windows on the top to change the amount of light being directly bounced to your subject and the amount being bounced from the ceiling. If a low ceiling is available then it'd be ideal to let the light bounce off of it.

My friend asked me to photograph her birthday this weekend. We're getting VIP at a club. While I like the look of just bouncing light from the walls and ceilings, this thing will allow my light to be much more controlled and I'll be ok in environments with high ceilings or no walls close by.

I chose this over the Gary Fong one because this one is directed light whereas the Gary Fong lightsphere diffuses everywhere, so it relies on nearby surfaces to bounce off of.

I did a test shoot with the Lumiquest quik bounce on my 50D with 430EX II flash.

Same settings for all pictures. I forgot to turn down the ISO from 640, so the pictures have noise.

Honestly i think the first picture looks the best, that and the 5th shot.

Quick question, i dont mean to thread jack but if i had a flash and the diffuser i posted before, how would i go about taking a portrait shot since then the flash would be only to one side?

You would need to get some remote triggers and set the flash off camera.

Use natural light.

nice...i got this little piggy a few weeks back..just learning how to use it efficiently...

its kinda big/silly to walk around with BUT the results can be pretty good (its a bit bigger than that speedlite softbox posted earlier) AND it has an inside baffle for extra diffusion ..best of all...it all folds up nice and flat

works really well off camera for fill if you have a larger softbox as your main light too!

no you don't need off camera flash and triggers, you just need a Flash flip bracket and a flash cord

but flash triggers are so cheap now and the cheaper ones are actually pretty good too (i have cactus V4's and they work pretty well and i paid like 65 bux for a starter kit plus 1 more reciever - i hear the V5's are even better).

OR if youre shooting Nikon with Nikon Flashes, you can use CLS :-D
