View Full Version : Lexus LFA

Finally, the moment is upon us. Lexus has released the most-exclusive version of its already hyper-exclusive LFA supercar. Behold, in person, the 2012 Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition. For those who need reminding, the LFA is Lexus' $375,000 supercar. There will only be 500 LFAs built worldwide, and of those, a scant 50 will have the Nürburgring package bestowed on them.
The package takes the standard LFA, which is certainly no slouch on a racetrack, and makes it even harder core. To start with, Lexus added 10 horsepower to the LFA's 4.8-liter V10 (for a total of 562), and has dropped gearshift times from .20 seconds to .15.
Helping out the reworked go-bits is a track-tuned suspension calling the shots for Nürburgring Edition-specific basketweave wheels shod with very sticky, very expensive rubber. The bodywork on the LFA Nürburgring gets some upgrades, too, most notably a unique front splitter and a huge fixed rear wing. According to Lexus, the extra 10 ponies are to overcome the increased aerodynamic drag from the aero bits, not to make the car any quicker.
The car can be had in white, gloss or matte black or screaming orange as seen here. If you're lucky enough to be in line for one, you'll need to have an extra 70 large in your hand for the package. Add another $20k if you want it matte black. For all that, Lexus will let you choose between an all-black interior, a black and red interior or a black and purple interior – and if you're European, you can have an all-carbon fiber interior.
Of course, as part of the Nürburgring package, you'll also get access to the legendary German racetrack itself. Buyers get driving lessons with a special instructor, a branded jacket, and a one-year pass to the Nordschleife and to its related themepark. Ye-haw.

Even though Scott was short shifting and not really giving it the beans (due to safety or whatever), the car still performed brilliantly.
So far, I haven't seen any tests done on the Nurburgring edition, just seen it unloading. It sounds a bit more aggressive so the exhaust must've been adjusted.

I love the cluster, there's nothing like it, but you're crazy if you don't love the sound this thing makes.
this was on top gear Uk last season.
The prototype version was tested twice on TopGear UK. First time around it beat one of my dream cars, the Gallardo LP-560 by 3 seconds in the wet. It also beat the Gallardo Superleggera LP-570 from 0-100-0.

As compared to whom? Kia, or BMW, Mercedez? I find that the people at Lexus are so much friendlier and helpful than any other luxury dealership. Everytime I dealt with BMW, the people are uptight and unfriendly, and that spreads throughout the organization (dealerships, car shows, etc)
Also as far as getting the same value for your money, there's nothing cheaper than the LFA that's comparable and that will retain its value. This car is projected to increase in value, not depreciate like the 599 and the SLR, SLS which are the most comparable cars to this one.
If I had $400,000 to drop on a car, this would be it. My .02.

Fair enough. I agree with the value for the money to an extent. I probably didn't explain what I meant very well as far as the pretentious part. I meant with this car, as in how you have to be selected by the places you go and who you know and everything. I understand you want your car to be seen at all the right places and everything. However, that could also mean that a decent amount of them will not end up with people who could truly appreciate the vehicle for what it is, as well as take care of it (and not destroy it). Just my opinion though.

I agree with you to an extend, but again, you can't resale the car for 2yrs so if you are not the type who can appreciate these kinds of cars, you wouldn't buy one. Also Lexus wanted exposure, that was the whole purpose of this car, that's why they selected the buyer to make sure the cars wouldn't become garage queens.
To be perfectly honest, if this was my only supercar, it would prob sit in a garage as well  I think most car guys would baby their first supercar...

Scott is awesome ... I got a ride along with him in an IS-F when it was first released (I had the option to drive the car or let him drive--I figured I'd probably get a chance to drive one later, but never would I get a chance to have him drive me around).

Scott is really cool and the sound that V10 makes is amazing. I also got a ride in an IS-F with Jeff Andretti; the wife came along. I also drove the IS-F. As you can see in the vid, it was a Lexus F-Sport event so they had the entire F-Sport line up there. It was a pretty cool day. The 2011 IS-F got several suspension and drivetrain changes and I hear it handles a LOT better.

So they put some carbon fiber on it, some special tires, went out and tested and it was worse so they added 10 horsepower, went and tested and it went just as fast as a normal one... said screw it and made it a 70k option... wow.

The regular LFA did the Nurburgring in 7:24 (http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?fID=0&gID=3&tID=10073&viewThread=y). Lexus states the Nur-Version should be about as fast or faster as their race cars since it weights a little more but is not running on restrictors for the SP8 class which restricts to under 500hp.
The race cars were about the same as the production cars since Lexus didn't care about winning as much, but rather testing the LFA to get rid of defects before production. Click here, it shows it weighted 3,300+lb (http://adac.24h-rennen.de/fileadmin/24h/downloads/BOP_%2024h.pdf). Also, it is a SP8 class requirement that cars are very close to the production version.

To me, the engine sound alone is worth $100K. Before this engine, on the Carrera GT engine provide that for me.

I'm not hating on the LFA, I think it's a fantastic car. I just wish manufacturers would stop doing this stuff. It's like Dodge/Chevy and their anniversary cars with special stickers that go for 20K more.
Build one car, make it what you want. If you want to upgrade, offer it as a factory upgrade. In the end it's just a car, there is no way a few carbon fiber panels, "tuned" suspension (tuned? to what?), and 10 more horsepower is worth 70K. That's just ridiculous.

In the beginning, you could not buy the LFA....you can only lease it.
Now, you can buy the LFA outright, but only on the condition that they sign an agreement giving the dealer first right of refusal to buy back the LFA if the owner wants to sell it within the first two years.
I saw it at the Lexus event last year and the car looked and sounded fantastic. The lucky guy who got to ride in it was sooooo excited when he started.....then almost tossed his cookies when he returned from his ride....:-p

Damn you for mentioning that ... I have no intention of ever seeing any movie associated with the Fast & Furious franchise which means I would have had plausible deniability in the eventuality that I got an LFA ... now I just have to not get one. Besides, knowing it is in that movie reduces it's perceived value considerably.

Today I attended the Lexus LFA Driver Development Program at the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, and while I don’t want to give away too much in advance of my Lexus Magazine article on the event, I did want to share some brief impressions.
I started off the day’s driving by hitting 118mph (190km/h) on the acceleration/braking test, which replaces 110mph (170km/h) as my fastest personal time.
My confidence in straight line was tempered by my experience on the slalom course, where on my first run-through I hit 3 of 5 cones.
Everyone in my group was super-friendly — it was made up of two Lexus dealership owners that bought personal LFAs, one gentleman who has just received his LFA last week, and Club Lexus member S2000toIS350, who has already posted up a detailed summary of his experience.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to drive the black production LFA — my entire day was spent exclusively in the yellow pre-production model due to a Lexus video that I’ll be appearing in. I did manage to take some photos, though, here’s one to start with:
There’s nothing like a great instructor — I was paired with Tim Moser, the program’s lead driver, and he helped me improve with every turn. I can’t thank him enough.
Special thanks to everyone responsible for running such a well-organized and extremely rewarding program — the event stands as one of the best experiences of my life, and I was honored to be able to take part. More soon!

Lexus LFA Nurburgring Package edition sets new production car record of 7 min 14 seconds
We are hearing that the Lexus LFA Nürburgring Package Edition has improved upon the 7:22.85 lap time of the Nürburgring Nordschleife set back in June, recording a 7:14 in the hands of Gazoo Racing driver Akira Iida.
The time which was recorded yesterday afternoon, was set in good weather conditions and on a clear lap.
Iida also set the previous 7:22 lap, but Lexus chose not to promote the achievement which suggested they were expecting the LFA to improve still further. Their target was the 7:19 production car record set by the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 on the latest Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres.
Sounds like Lexus hit the bulls-eye..
Lexus is offering the Nürburgring package to a maximum 50 of the 500 customers that have ordered the LFA and its production will start in 2012. Power is boosted to 566 bhp to compensate for the increased drag of its aerodynamics package, despite this acceleration is maintained at 0-62 mph in just 3.7 seconds with a 203 mph maximum speed.
In terms of handling modifications, the LFA Nürburgring package includes a sports tuned suspension, a vehicle height reduction of 10mm, exclusive mesh-type wheels and dedicated, high-grip tyres.
Available only in Matte Black, Black, White or Orange, the Nürburgring package-equipped LFA’s exterior is complimented by a choice of three interior colour schemes –Black and Red, Black and Purple, and all Black. All feature a carbon fibre centre console and door trims, whilst the carbon fibre bucket seats are trimmed in Alcantara.
LFA customers specifying the Nürburgring package will be offered individual instruction on the Nordschleife by one of the Nürburgring chief instructors, and will also receive a one year pass for Nordschleife driving.
Expect to see an official video plus further details during the next few days, in the meantime here’s a video from yesterday, although not the actual record lap being set. Enjoy…

Is that a fact or just what you heard? I thought that he was going to give her one and then they split and she just got herself one?
I'm really impressed with this car more and more everyday! Is incredible to see what a piece of Japanese engineering this thing is! So Toyota decides to take a shot a the Supercar thing and comes up with Japan's first true Supercar and one like the LFA at that setting records left & right.
I am yet to see another CEO from one of the mass production car companies that's as dedicated as Akio Toyoda is. This guy was actually part of the race team and drove the LFA at the nurburgring; has been seen multiple times taking the FT-86 concept out for runs, and is involved in every new vehicle the company is making - including the new Lexus GS. I hope they bring out the GSF as well.
I was fortunate enough to go for a ride in the regular LFA.

Does anyone here watch Top Gear USA. Last Sunday's episode was pretty cool. It is online for free on history channel website.
Tanner Foust took the LFA around a race track and tried to beat the time posted in Forza Motorsports 4.

OMG your right. I did not read earlier in this thread before. I just noticed the Infineon raceway post. That's awesome. I met Tanner Foust once at a Formula D event when he was still drifting the 550HP Twin Turbo 350z. Got his autograph and a picture with him. No idea at that time he would get his own show(Supercars exposed) and be a host on Top Gear USA.

Chris Harris (Evo UK) on the LFA
Not often I do this, but of all the cars I've driven in the past year, the LFA might be at the top of my WANT list.
You have to see it in the flesh, hear that motor and drink-in the incredible engineering.
It drives superbly: I did 2 laps of the 'Ring in it last week: what a tool.
Oddly, I think it's one of the most emotionally appealing supercars ever made. It's unlike anything else - the ultimate expression of Japanese tech.
Each to their own. But the LFA makes a 599 GTO seem a little, well, crude.

Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition video review
Chris Harris presents a video review of the Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition at - where else - the Nurburgring

The Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition is one of the fastest road cars ever at the Nordschleife. Chris Harris puts it to the test around the Green Hell in the video below.
Just 50 Nurburgring Editions will be made, out of a total run of 500 LFAs, celebrating a hat-trick of class wins in the Ring 24hrs. Each will cost £63,000 on top of the standard LFA’s £352,000. Personal tuition from a works LFA driver and a year’s Ring-lappery are thrown in for free.
Peak power from the LFA’s bespoke 4.8-litre V10 engine is up 10bhp, from 552 to 562bhp, though quoted torque remains the same at 354lb ft, produced at a high 6800rpm. As the figures suggest, the engine thrives on revs. Thankfully, the noise is just as terrific as before.
That huge, fixed rear wing is unique to the Nürburgring Edition (regular LFA has a much smaller appendage that rises at speed). It’s one of several new CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) components on the car, contributing to a weight saving of around 100kg.
You can read the full technical story and all of Harris’s driving impressions (plus the story of the LFA Nurburgring’s absurd Nordschleife launch) in evo Issue 163, on sale now. Full details here.

Quote from another forum.
Autoblog: 2012 Lexus LFA
Medical dictionaries define a drug as "any article intended to affect the structure or any function of the body of humans."
The 2012 Lexus LFA is not a supercar, it is a narcotic.
Twist the carbon-fiber key of the Lexus flagship and listen to its race-bred V10 wail. Within seconds of the sound reaching the eardrum, the adrenal glands initialize epinephrine production and endorphins are released from the pituitary. The result of the natural injection is a more rapid heartbeat, an increase in blood pressure, involuntary muscle relaxation/contraction and an overall feeling of well-being - the human body becomes more alert, physically stronger and has greater energy. In layman's terms... the LFA makes its driver feel positively euphoric.
Regrettably, as is the case with most "feel good" medicines, the LFA is also extremely habit-forming and highly addictive. But Lexus has addressed this issue by ensuring safeguards are in place to prevent abuse. First, a person has to be of legal driving age to get behind the wheel. Second, the automaker has limited production to just 500 units worldwide (there are only 46 in North America today). Lastly, and this will certainly keep the toxins from falling into the wrong hands, is that the base sticker price of the carbon-fiber, aluminum and titanium hallucinogenic is a nicely-rounded $375,000.
Yes, it is unlikely that your friends, neighbors or co-workers will overdose on LFA anytime soon........contd

That's expensive! However when I think about it, most Carbon Ceramic brake kits run about $15K and may not be as good as these brakes. So not too bad for OEM parts of this caliber.
