View Full Version : Evo Sti or Rx8???

I currently have a 2004 rx8 and I love it, its pretty fast handles great and is just so much fun to drive but I just drove a evo 8 and a 2005 sti I also loved them both and couldnt decide which one i liked better, the sti might have felt a tiny bit faster and the evo may have handled a tiny bit better but not enough to make me like oe more then the other. Im thinking about selling my rx8 and either getting a newer used one with less miles or a used sti or evo with with comparable miles. I dont really know which one to choose I dont really need the extra space of the evo or the sti and the gas milage of the rx8 isnt my biggest concern so Im just wondering what would you do and why?

Depends what kind of mods your going to want to do... 500awhp on a evo:$ 5k... 500awhp on a sti:$ 15k ....evo has nicer interior, out handles the sti, responds to mods easier, easier to do maintenance. Subi has more low end torque, and that boxer exhaust. An evo or sti will be a huge step up from your rx-8. Just make sure to check any used car for mods and anything that might have been put back to stock. Gl finding something you like.. Just my $0.02...put it towards a car.

I will be building my from rolling shell come spring, and probably trade the rx8 gt on some 4 door daily like a TL and probably sell my hatch for a bike....
RX8 to evo wont be a HUGE step, however boost and tq, hp is going to be a nice addition :) i miss boost from my TC

I just BOught a 2010 EVO, only reason i'd get an STI is for the versatility for the hatch, other than that I love my X

why does it cost sooooo much more to mod the sti?

why does it cost sooooo much more to mod the sti?
Cause god doesn't like subarus lol
Piston rings on subis are weak and like to let go around 400awhp , every motors different though. There are stock block 550awhp sti's running around that haven't popped yet. The boxer motor design makes things tricky as well.

cant you just put in new pistons and be good for 500awhp?do you need to have forged rods, balanced crankshaft etc?.not sure, just asking btw

You can throw pistons in but if your pulling the motor apart you mine as well do the rest...do it right the first time. Sti rods and crank are pretty bulletproof...weakest point are the piston rings. Supporting mods add up quick as well..

so if sti rods and crank are bulletproof why replace them.turbo kit with pistons and labor plus tune and you would be good for 500awhp right?and it wouldnt cost 15 grand

So overal the evo has a better engine? would you say one is more reliable (knowing that certain mods would and hp peaks would effect this)? from what Ive heard in other forms you would get more power (example..) with a catback exhaust on an evo then you would get putting the same type of catback on the sti?

sti might be more money to mod, but it makes up for it in the price of the car. most sti's are 5k cheaper than stock evos. and the stis usually have some bolt ons.

From reading other forums im kind of leaning towards the evo but ill prolly end up getting whatever i can find a better deal on, Im shopping used and it seams like theres more/slightly cheeper stis

This is even coming from a guy with an STi. The number one reason I prefer Evos to STi's is the fact that they are so much cheaper to get to big performance numbers.

hm I just dont know what todo, Im realling feeling the Evo now, I want the best performance that I can afford and something that i can mod to be even better and better when I hav more pocket change but my rx8 is just so much fun and I definitely like the interior and the styling much more then the sti or the evo but I really want the extra performance of the evo/sti

Sti or evo all the way. Ive never been a huge RX8 fan tho, just not fast enough for what it is imo.
As for which rally car, thats up to u lol. I chose the Sti because the sti for a few reasons: It had a nicer interior and more solid feel, I liked the sound ALOT better than the evo, the torque of the H4 felt better than the Evos I4, I liked the Sti's adjustible center diff over the evos various modes; and how the Sti could have a rear wheel bias regarding where the power goes, and last but not least the STi was the only performance car the was "Highly" recommended by Consumer reports......all they care about is reliability and economy and this is a high performing car rated as highly as an accord, civic, or camry lol.
The evo is a great car, but for the years ur looking at the Sti is better overall as a car, unless all u care about is being a dyno queen.......but u own an RX8 so im guessing ur more realistic

on a a 2005 sti can you adjust which wheels you send the power too? for some reason I thought that was only on new models and id love to have most of the power to the rear wheels because right now i love how my rwd handles

Either way you'll be happy, just make sure you check out which ever car you buy. Stock FTW. Also 05+ is your best bet, try to stay away from 04s. The adjustably your talking about is the DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential) and i think the way it works is that it sends a theoretical amount of trq to the front and rear wheels depending on the settings.

Definitely go with the Evo. ~600whp on stock bottom end FTW.

can u compare an evo or sti to an rx8? not talking smack, but i just feel the evo and sti are at a whole different level than an rx-8. if you want more bang for your buck id get an evo. if you just want a car you're not going to do much with i'd get an sti

Just to put this out their a STI has better interior then a Evo. Evo's interior feels like it was made in china, in the winter alot of crap rattles.

STi and Evos are on a diff level than RX8s....and when i said before about the Evos having a nicer interior than the STi's i was talking about the seats and the fact that everything isnt blue lol But the STi's fit and finish is much better than the Evo..its not a Audi but then again its not made to be luxury.
If your going to want big power and go crazy with it....evo.
If you want around 300awhp and a nice daily.....STi.

this dude drives an RX8, I dont think he cares about pushing the limits of the power envelope. He proby cars more about the overall driving experience, something an RX8 offers alot of.

Yes u can, to my knowledge 04s and early 05s can send up to 65% of the torque to the rear wheels, it definitely does change the driving dynamics, and u can get some good oversteer going on.
Mid 05s+ to my knowledge, had the torque split lowered to 54% being sent to the rear, still a rear bias.....but as u might guess, its a bit less RWD like in driving dynamics. (Subaru purposely wanted less understeer due to driver safety concerns, I can explain it more if u want but there was lready a huge arguement in another thread when I brought it up lol)
This is all nit picking though, any car u get that is a WRX or STi is a fantastic machine that u will have a blast with.

Why stay away from 04s?
as far as I know the only difference is that during 05 (unless it was 06 they did that in), they lowered the DCCD torque split so there was less rear bias (not a fun change). and they added a fuel cut off.....that can be bypassed by cutting into the green wire under the right side of the steering wheel.....ie the cutoff might aswell not even be there cuz u can still steal the car in under a minute.
So theres really no point in not looking at 04s, unless ur aware of some other issues with them that somehow havent arisen in my car?
please enlighten me if u do

Well I really like the idea of being able to split the power to be more rear biased, oversteer is always fun ;) and i ove my rx8 but its just not fast enough although it handles great, I hate getting beat off the line by people in ****tly little cars

I do agree that the STi is not built like the Evo in terms of handling power, but if you are throwing down 500 or 600 AWHP on the stock motor... well, I don't care if you have a 4G63, you're going to blow that thing up sooner or later.
It's always cheaper to do it right the first time. Remember that. And if you blow up a built motor... well the Universe hates you.

04s have 5x100 hubs that are weaker than the 5x114.3 the 05 and up have, also the interior is slightly different. I sat in a 04 and the overall interior seems cheap and not as nice as the 05s and up. Other than that there isnt many differences.

STi 6MT> Evo 5MT, def 6MT The 6MT in the STi is borderline bulletproof

i dont think it would work like that...partially because of the boxer motor and how it sits compared to the I4 of the Evo.....wouldnt want to **** on your dreams though and that would be awesome if someone did it lol

sti or evo are both nice. i was never really a fan of the rx8's.
its all what you like/want to put money in. any car can make 600whp, just depends how much $$$$$ you have and want to spend on it.
for me it was a toss up between evo/sti. one of the reasons i went with the sti is for the boxer rumble

any block that can do up to 450whp safely on a 4 without modifications is impressive
Don't get so tied up on HP. Torque is what kills motors. You can be on a big turbo and "safely" (I don't even want to use that word) be over 400WHP with under 400WTQ. Have a small FP Green with huge torque numbers and your motor can blow up.

imo if you like the rx8 and dont mind it in the snow id say keep the rx8 if you want the awd goodness in the bad weather the evo and sti are both good cars and you can make big power if thats what your looking for but im sure either of them are fun to drive and if you plan on making massive amounts of power your gonna end up shellin out probably around the same amount on each. but i wouldnt go nd get another rx8 if youve got no problems with the one you have now.
but what i would do is get an old honda to dd and buy a clean 240 rolling shell or super clean stock one and build it with the left over money..... thats just me though
