Someone that I know is looking to buy an new Impreza within the next couple of months are so. They are going back and forth on whether to buy an automatic or a stick. Which of the two trannies is more durable and built better?

Don't ask me about the 2002 5spd.....

But really. The 2002 5spd has had its share of problems. Most of the issues were corrected (in theory) in the 2003 and up model years by using stronger gears. The STi 6spd is by far the most robust of the group.

He asked for in a rex a stick or auto... i don't think we are talking sti's here.

Actually he said Impreza. Granted the STi never came in automatic, its still an impreza. WRX was never specified sucka.

Please stay on topic: which is built better and more durable, 5spd or auto? We aren't debating mitsu vs. subaru here.

Ok my bad. Both trans are terrible, I would buy a manual and put a PPG Dogbox in it.

nah, 6 spd=bad gearin for 1/4. I got the true winner, sti 6-speed with PPG hardened gear set!!

Yeah, last time i checked subies arent known for being 1/4mile cars. I always thought they were known for handling on tracks that arent a straight line.

Peoplehave different needs for all cars some people what their subie to be a drag car and some accomplish that others fail.

And now we are way off topic.....

If you are looking at a WRX, get the manual. Seriously. Why anyone would want an automatic sports car is beyond my comprehension. The 2002 WRX has had some problems in the manual, but if you don't beat on the car too hard you'll be fine. Even if you are looking at a used 2002, get the 5spd. If you are looking at a 2003/2004/2005, get the 5spd. If you are looking at an 06, get the 5 spd. Please don't buy an automatic unless you are too lazy to shift. But even if you get an auto, you'll enjoy the car.

I hope Julie doesn't read this.....:help:

At least in DSMs, automatic trannies can be made to handle big power a lot cheaper than the manual trannies.

And when a car is 11sec or faster the auto tranny helps a lot because it shifts faster, makes the car more consistent, and frankly leaves one less thing for the driver to worry about.

I know, I know. But seriously, how many guys are building 11 second or faster drag Imprezas? When I think WRX, I don't automatically assume dragstrip. Maybe becuase I use mine for other things, that would be the last priority for me.

Considering we bought a WRX because we needed a car driven daily through heavy traffic the automatic made sense.

Why a WRX?

A well priced small nimble car that is built well with AWD a turbo and four doors with decent seating for 4 adults.

Btw, are people modding the WRX auto trannies yet?

I know there was a guy at one of the meets with a 11 second yellow wagon that had a built auto tranny.

I can't fault you for buying a automatic car to suit your purposes. My job entails a LOT of city/rushhour traffic driving. I sit in gidlock a LOT. I could have bought an auto, but I think the reward from a 5spd outweighs the convenience of an automatic. It's my only car, as I don't have a fast DSM for my speed bug, so it had to be the most rewarding car. I'm not saying that people that drive automatics cannot be enthusiasts, because they can. I just think that you get a better overall driving experience from a 5spd.

If your trying to build A LOT of power and your suby is your dedicated drag car, Id go with an auto. a built auto tranny will shift faster and can handle more power. I remember reading a thread on i-club a while ago about a guy with an RS that he eventually parted and sold. This guy built the car specifically for drag racing. He said next car he buys is an auto.
