i had a '91 NA>turbo then back to a NA and then sold haha.

to be honest, probably the biggest waste of money, time, patience, blood, and sweat i've ever had. i owned the car for almost 2 years, had it completely built by what was considered a "reputable" shop and ended up getting completely ripped off. it's really ashame because i think they're cool looking cars but i think it's funny when people SWEAR by the 3S and call it bulletproof yet EVERY single person i know that had an MR2 had major issues with them.

i'd say the only positive about owning an MR2 is that the community is full of great, knowledgeable, mature people, i love the mr2oc and got nothing but help from them over the past few years when I owned mine.

if i had advice for the current MR2 enthusiast, i'd say sell it immediately before you end up getting ****ed out of tons of money LOL!

I haz one. Will probably be selling it over the winter. OR trading it for an n/a with cash on top or with the ability to swap parts over. Really I just want to have my seats and my headunit. Everything else can go with the car actually lol.

I loved my n/a when I had it and never really figured out how good it was to me until it was gone. I love my turbo car now but after rebuilding the car and having problem after problem after problem I've just about had it. You can ask anyone that really knows me. I eat, breath, and sleep mr2s. I have the tat on my back to show for it but I need to step away for a while and get something slow that I can push to the limit and only have to change the oil. Just like when I had my n/a car lol.

I'll be back to the mr2 crew someday but I might jump ship and become an integra/Honda guy for a bit. Ive been driving my girlfriends quite a bit and talking to her about it and the car is so slow but so fun. Plus the parts are cheap and everyyywhere. I'm gonna get one, intake/header/exhaust with a set of cams, wheels and suspension, tint/audio/seats. And be done. Auto x and beat the piss out of it.

Justin is right tho. These cars either love you or they hate you. Sorry for my little rant about another car but its been on my mind for a couple months and I'm sick of looking at my mr2 sit.

It has a lot of potential and the engine/trans are practically new so whoever gets it won't regret it lol.

the turbo cars are fine. the only thing I strongly recommend if you want to buy a turbo mr2 is to find a BONE STOCK car. The problem I, and others have run into is buying modified. Its jus like any other boosted car I guess.

N/a will treat you really good and be fun. Just be careful with the turbo car. They are VERY temperamental lol. Can you modify it? Yes. There is a very good website called MR controls that I can link to when I get home that gives the dos and donts and even numbers to back it up. Just have to be smart and "play by the rules" lol

I agree x10. Do not buy a modified mr2. Most of them have weird problems, are hack jobs, or time bombs. I think almost every single person I know that has purchased an mr2 already modified has replaced their motor. I bought my turbo bone stock with 160k, I modified it and beat the crap out of it and the motor was as healthy the day I parted it out as it was when I bought it.

Well the kid i sold mine too figured out what was going on,which is what i had as one of my guesses. Upon installation of the new clutch,some of the fingers were bent on the pressure plate,causing my clutch issue,he bent em back and its been fine.

Thanks man. Doubt I'll have it ready in time for the meet. It has a light knock that I think is a wrist pin. I definitely plan to go to as many meets as possible once I get it moving though.

If anyone in the mr2 world is thinking about this and you have pre 93 suspension, you should consider it. 93+ struts and springs (doesn't apply on the stock side in this case) were better than pre 93. Cheap handling upgrade here!

Hmm.. I haven't been on this forum in a while and never seen this thread... Im up near Utica NY, and have a white MR2, I have been slowly working on for the last 3 years. Mine was an N/A swapped to a 3sgte which scared me because the shop had no info on this, but the engine has been very strong thus far. I dont know the past histroy of my car other than its from TN and was registered in NY for one winter before me... The under side is clean. I have come to the conclusion that of the 3 previous owners, one did some basic but upgrades like 93 brakes, 3sgte swap, kyb adjustable struts, sway bars, because these parts run flawlessly.

Then, i think someone else bought it and tried to rice it out some. The body kit on it is rough, the ugly blue interior had the carbon fiber stickers on it, giant tach, nice stereo system, but wired poorly, 94-95 taillights - wired terribly, and finally, cut stock springs on nice struts {hence why I assume the two owners}.

Anyways, the interior is 90% black now and cleaned up nicely, 75% of the electrical issues are sorted out, and this winter, I hope to get her painted and finish those other 25% so come spring time, I can add a little power. I also installed Bilstein HD struts w/ TRD springs, and the ride and handing is amazing.

So far i have bought/replaced, Both bumpers, both doors, both headlight assemblies, turn signals, dr tail, hood, wiper cowl, windshield, I have a quarter thats going on on the week of the 16th, dr fender, 93-95 wheels, toyo proxes rear tires, 93+ rear calipers and rotors, a new shift knob, the blue clock overlay, the stupid trunk release plastic that always breaks, a minty ashtray, Lf and both rear struts, exedy oem clutch, drivers hub and control arm, front pads and rotors, thermostat, drivers side vent, free pioneer stereo with bluetooth and Ipod connectivity, 5 inch kenwood speakers (also free), modified my window switch for auto up, and have in the mail; turbo engine lid, 93+ shifter assembly, front motor/ trans mount, trunk release cable, h4 headlight housings... and i will be buying white leds for the dash and new shift bushings whenever this lady come and buys my tires.



God Ive done a lot of work in 14 months. and the car still looks like crap lol

And yea 2zz swap it would be out, that's the same motor that's found in the lotus elise I think, stock the motor is a 1zz/vvti
Best 50/50 balance out of all the 3 gen mr2s, the trunks behind the seats, not like sw20s and aw11s,
And there rare, and in 2003+ some mrs came with smt transmissions , buttons on the stearing wheel that say up and down for shifting, all mr2 spyders are 5speed, hard top is avable, 2500+? Cool interior, i. Like sw20 interior better and please don't buy a green one unless your old

Great cars with pretty good mod potential these days. The 1ZZ isn't a bad motor for the car since it is so light but it isn't any kind of powerhouse unless your go forced induction.

With just a few tweaks they are awesome little cars though. If you have any particular questions don't hesitate to hit me up.


(Hard tops are no longer available new. A guy named Mike in Jerz imports them though and sells them for about 3 grand.)

Your power steering pumps, do they stay on 24/7 but just lower the assist at higher speeds - or do they completely shut off?

I purchased a pump off a member of spyderchat last summer and installed it into my 2001 Prelude over the winter. Currently, I have it on a kill switch, since my control board malfunctioned (installation mistake on my end... waiting for a new one). I have the option to turn the pump on whenever I want, but also control the amount of assist it puts out using the controller (well, should be able to adjust the assist). Just curious if the pump is always on or shuts off at some point.

Just what i wanted to hear! I was worried about leaving it on (once i get the controller re-installed) and end up having the pump burn up...

From what i've read - usually the assist decreases as speed increases. The MR2 pumps normally receive a signal from the speed sensor - but there were a few complications with that when doing this install.

Nobody has confirmed if the pulse is the same between a Honda and MR2 (i know nothing about this, so i looked for the next best thing) The other options were to have the pump on a switch, so i can just turn it on and off when needed, or have a controller to put out the exact signal pulse that the unit needs to adjust the amount of assist. Usually the conversion is done on old cobra kit cars or track specific cars, but a few honda owners have installed them in the past (but i've not found a honda owner using this controller that the cobra owners have used).


I'm pretty much going by what i've been told from the cobra kit car owners ( as far as the controller's abilities are). So I won't really know for sure exactly how much the assist really varies until I have experienced it myself.



If anyone is interested in the control board and what it can do, the site is www.myraceshop.com. There are installation instructions that show the different modes the control board can be set to.

What's wrong with a green one!? They're a lot nicer in person than in pictures, they're actually aquamarine, it looks blue half of the time.

To answer you, yes i am in PA, but since enlisting in the air force i am only home on the weekends(philadelphia). During the week i am stationed at Dover AFB, DE.

I disappeared from the car scene for a while because I'm actually ashamed to bring my mr2 out to meets lol :cry: its in need of a paint job bad! and instead of putting money into a paint job, i decided to put the down payment for that gen4 3sgte swap that PRIME is doing.

Meh it's a bit too flashy for my taste but the 5SFE is a great motor if your like to run the back roads or do autoX. But 15k for that is waaay out of the question. Like what Dpancoast said, I wouldn't pay over 6-7,000 at that and if I did have that much, i'd but a turbo for v6 swapped one instead.
