So I finally picked up the WRX I wanted. Bought the car from Robert's Auto Mall in Downington great place very reasonable. The car only had one owner and had 14k miles on it. I love this car, I keep finding out things about it I had no idea about I'm so happy to be a Subie owner. It's quick to me compared to my 2000 Jetta and very nice exterior/interior. I'm not looking to get much power I'm more for looks.

Are you sure it's an 09?
The pics don't seem to show the gunmetal wheels. It's probably just me.
Make sure you have winter or all season rubber on it. The stockers for 09 were summer only.

I like how the set up already is in the car, ipod hook up which displays text on the dash for the ipod and radio. The ipod/radio can be controlled on the dash and steering wheel I don't want to lose that, it looks very clean. I'm just putting in my MTX double 12' sub I've had in and maybe eventually new speakers depending on how they hold out/sound with the sub. I noticed not to may people are into sounds either but I'm a girl I'm not looking to get power or race or anything like that I'm more for looks of the car.

You'll need a tune to take advantage of the bolt ons. If it has the factory cat-back, a DP will make it louder for sure. Then you have a full turbo back! Yay!

+1 for GOOD coilovers!

My ISC N1s are in the same price / quality range of BC,TEIN, & Megan.

I really wish I'd have gone with a better strut & lowering spring setup. I might be able to get them smoothed out a bit by playing with the pre-load, but not by much.
Talk to DaveSTI about any Subaru suspension mods you're considering.

So I parked on a hill the other day and ever since my hill assist hasn't been working. Is there any other way to try to activate the hill assist? I don't necessarily need it but I don't know why it doesn't work now lol If you know any tips about it I'd really appreciate it lol

Ace, you have no idea what the issues I have to deal with when it comes to the Baja. ;) it's a kit for a Legacy which is lighter. The manufacturer recommended a little preload on the front & rear (a bit mote in the front) & using the damping adjustments to tune the ride. I bought cheap coilovers & am paying the price. :(
If they say a little preload might help, I'm tryin' it. ;)

Oh I can fully understand the custom aspect of things...you think a Baja is odd, try owning a 240 where the market is flooded with **** coilovers, and to go with a decent set you're going custom anyway (like I had to lol)

What I"m confused as is why they suggest preloading them, even a little. With a linear spring you'll never change the capacity/weight of the spring, only move it's working area to a smaller zone. Certainly I understand slight preload for cross weighting and that sort for a race car, but on a street car I'd be afraid to really put much on, as most cheap coilovers (as you claim to have) don't offer any true rebound correction...because of this, it's gonna make it very jumpy feeling on uneven roads...sure you'll be able to use the 'dampening' adjustment to a degree, but it's not going to mask the ride.

Have you ever reduced preload to zero and maybe backed the dampening off as well? In my experience with most cheap stuff, they actually work best on lowest settings...yes I know that sounds odd but it's true.

Another thing to cosider: Can you increase spring rate at all? I mean if you know the springs I/D and length (easily measured) you could tear your coilovers apart and put some springs in there. HOWEVER (and while this sounds great in theory) you're more than likely now going to be pushing the limits of the damper itself here...thus now you're in the snowball effect of it all.

As an EX cheap coilover owner I fully support this statement.

I love hearing things like this. Heck I'm on 550/450 springs and it rides like a Caddilac with the 8611's :D I may even go to 650/550

Not trying to thread jack Megan. :)
One more quick reply.
The coilovers ARE at zero preload.
Any medium or bigger bump is unbearable with the dampening turned up. Turned down it's not near as bad.... But it's like I'm in a civic or jetta with cut springs. they advised a LITTLE preload and THEN softening the dampening.

I'm pretty sure your WRX turbo, and pretty much any factory turbo for many years are oil and water cooled. Basically, after shutting down the coolant will continue to cycle through the turbo and in the process it forces oil to also cycle through till it is cooled down. So basically it cools it self down just like a turbo timer would but without wasting gas. So there is no need for a turbo timer unless you are tracking the car :)

Too late. :)

Though the previous post about not needing one is correct.
Megan, look under your hood.
The tiny, second reservoir / radiator cap near your turbo IS a turbo cooldown device.
The heat from the turbo pulls coolant from there into the turbo, the suction pulls MORE coolant from the main radiator into the little one. When the turbo is cooled off the flow of coolant stops.

The beauty is that you dont even need to let it sit for 5 minutes. ;)

With my car I can actually hear the coolant circulating through the turbo after its been shut off. The reservoir Rob is talking about works.

Enough of that, your gonna do what your gonna do.

Honestly in my opinion an intake is an intake, its just which brand name do you want. Make sure the piping that is used is not metal, because the heat from the engine with heat up the metal intake tubing which defeats the purpose of having a cold air or sr intake.

I would go with a plastic based material for the tubing because it wont get as hot. K&N uses a plastic material I believe.

Our most popular intakes are the Perrin CAI and K&N short ram. The AP uses a K&N filter which is a plus. I wouldn't worry too much about the intake heating up.

...but he was saying you DON'T have to wait in your car with the way stock Subarus are setup. The 2ndary resevoir keeps pumping coolant through the turbo even when the car is turned off (until the turbo cools down)....where as a turbo timer would leave your car on to pump said coolant.

Don't waste your money....spend it on something else if you havent already bought it. Unless you just want people to randomly remind you that you left your car running....haha

Sorry Nick....not true. Subarus are finicky about intakes. Without a tune different intakes will effect your car in different ways. Here is a good post from Nabisco, it's a little out dated but it might give you some perspective.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=477393

Do intakes cause problems with the air/fuel ratio?

Many seem to believe that since their XXX intake does not cause a CEL or exhibit any driveability problems, then their XXX intake must be good. Though the apparent increase in power gives them peace of mind, what they don't take into account is their intake is actually causing unseen harm to their engine. This is generally due to two reasons:
1. The intake piping diameter is incorrect. This can cause a lean condition in the case of larger than stock diameter piping or a rich condition with decreased diameter piping.
2. The air flow is not laminar. The stock piping, through it's apparent unusual design, is constructed to smooth out turbulent air flow. Aftermarket systems do not take this into consideration. When turbulence occurs, the MAF sensor will suddenly see more or less air then it had previously. This will cause the ECU to respond by making the engine run leaner or richer for as long as the error from turbulence occurs.

Can the intake problems be corrected through aftermarket engine management?

Yes. There are a wide variety of engine management systems that have the capability of modifying the mass air flow values to correct intake piping that is non-OEM size. Some intakes have especially troublesome turbulence problems. Since this turbulence can occur at different points in the power band, based on both engine RPM and engine load, all that can be done to make the engine run safely is to recalibrate the engine with a relatively rich overall tune to compensate.

started looking at some gauges, I like to have everything match best as possible and since Defi doesn't make Air to fuel ratio gauges I'm looking at getting both AEM boost gauge and air to fuel ratio. I'll get a Perrin dual gauge pod to mount onto the steering wheel column. I just hope that mounting it there wont block any view of the stock gauges.

I'd appreciate any input on anyone who has gauges mounted on the steering wheel column and let me know how you like it there and if it works for you. Thanks

IIRC, the steering wheel pods will block your stock speedo and I *think* the fuel gauge... unless that's on the older models...

ok thanks maybe I can adjust the steering wheel I don't really have another choice as to where to put it, I only want 2 and they come in a single mount on top of the dash, the dual pod steering wheel, or the triple which goes on top of the clock/mpg indicator and I don't care for that.

jesse096
02-14-2011, 11:41 AM
I actually like the triple pod mount where the factory clock goes, my buddy has it and a 2 gauge pod on the A-pillar, and it looks so much nicer IMO. The steering wheel mount for me just makes more of a clutter... Hopefully someone will chime in and tell you if the pods block off the gauges. What gauges are you gonna use? Boost and and wideband?

yeah I like the pod on the clock too but then I like the ave mpg temp and clock lol and that blocks everything. I want to get a boost and wideband air to fuel ratio most likely both AEM

-Jesse

That's because your engine isn't using any gas. Put the car in neutral when its still moving and the wideband registers the fuel being used to idle the engine. Keeping your car in great while coasting saves now gas than throwing it in neutral.

jesse096
02-15-2011, 07:11 AM

 I should NOT post when I first wake up! SO incoherent lol.

Also, as an alternative to black, have you ever thought about color matching that piece to the same silver as your car? I know a ton of the si guys do it because the sedans came with that same chrome license plate strip. The color match flows really nicely and looks stock.

Here's an example of a guy that did it:
http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/introduction-pictures/247628-2011-dyno-blue-pearl-si-leather-interior.html

Either way, I think going black or color matching will look a lot cleaner. In for results :o

excellent, I highly recommend the kartboy shifter bushings if you haven't already done so, tightens it up nicely

Down-pipe and gauges are some of the most rewarding installs by far. (Shifter bushings too!) Once you get your DP on you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. TT on the other hand....ehhhh.

Everything is finally installed and running great. Today had a tune by Area 1320. They do great work big thanks to them! My car was running really lean due to the intake but now things are set and the car feels a lot better.
OS Tune by Area 1320>> 252 AWHP and 271 AWTR, 18 psi at peak and a target AFR of 10.9:1

pics of installs... (from a point and shoot not the best lol)

I am very happy with everything. The DP isn't as loud as a thought but I will eventually get an Invidia Catback. It sounds good when I get on it though.
I also am currently trying to find a new sub box so I can get rid of the obnoxious one I have now that moves around and gives me zero trunk space lol.
More importantly I will be getting the DP wrapped, a heat shield, a fuel pump, and bigger top mount.

Let me know what you think Thanks : )

Not only was the open loop delay causing issues but that intake on there without a tune was just a recipe or disaster. Glad we could straighten it all out for ya :)

A fuel pump and a tmic and we can toss a good chunk of boost at her ;)

Thanks for coming in!!

True. Mind you the 18psi was peak. It settles around 16psi. Didnt want to push it in this heat with the stock tmic :)

Def, she told me that she didnt see 18psi tonight...had to remind her that its always going to change depending on gear and tails off near redline.

Thanks again as always for your help!

Yeah I am very thankful nothing happened I had the intake on for a couple of months now. I will def be back again. Thank you for straightening everything out, I still can't believe how much of a difference it is

Yes lol but you said that was nothing "great". I'm happy with it though

Lol. My goal was to get it safe for her.

And no the power isnt "killer" but its safe. With the stock tmic and that exhaust is gonna hold it back a bit.

It's still driving a lot better then it was before I can tell a big difference although it isn't a huge change. It's still awesome lol

Congrats Megan !!!
Considering the car is rated for 265 at the crank, you're making decent power on a conservative tune.

Thanks I've been waiting a while to get the tune and I'm thankful and happy I finally got it done, it drives so much better. With some more mods I can even get up a little higher, I'm really happy with it. I drove by your work on the way there and back Ck pointed it out lol.

Car over boosted again so I decided I don't want to wait around for the TMIC, or fuel pump... I ordered a Walbro 255 fuel pump kit, Torque Solution TMIC, and a Invidia Q300 exhaust should be in by Tuesday the 7th then back off to Area 1320 on Thursday the 9th for installs and retune.... Praying this works this time around. I didn't even start my new job and I'm about broke lol. jk
