I have a short driveway and it's on a slant. So when I work on my car, i park my car blocking the driveway (think of the letter T). Now, an unmarked impala (still very obvious it was a cop) drives by... eyeing me the whole time as I'm reaching down to take off my oil filter. A few minutes later, i'm under my car trying to remove the drain plug, and I see he passes by again, but this time he stops. I figured if he wanted to say something he would... but he didn't and drove off. Now, as the oil is draining, he comes in the other direction parks in the spot infront of me, facing traffic. THe dialogue went something like this...

COP: How you doing?
ME: Good, and yourself?
COP: Good... you know what you're doing right now is illegal, right?
ME: No... what exactly am I doing that's illegal??
COP: You can't change your oil on the street.
ME: Since when??
COP: Since always.
ME: ?? I've been changing my oil for about 4 years now in the same spot, and never had a problem before (i neglected to mention the tune ups, and lowering my car).
COP: You can only do emergency things like changing a tire. Not changing your oil.
ME: Sorry, I never knew that.
COP: Well, now you do. So finish up and don't do it again.
::Drives off::

I later find out from a crossing gaurd that he was the "deputy chief" and he's been on everybody's case lately. Is this guy strokin' his ego, or did I do something wrong??

<<sorry for the long post, i just wanted to give you a good idea of what happneed>>

On a side note, when I park in the driveway, i block about half of the side walk, but there's plenty of room to walk around it. Can I get ticketed for that?

If your are doing the work to your car on the sidewalk on in the street it is illegal.. according to the books you are not allowed to WASH or REPAIR your veh on a public hwy.. you need to work on your car in your driveway..

I don't quite get what your saying... and i'm not sure if it's because i was a bit unclear of the locale... I drew up a quick diagram...

[My car] is where i'm parked when i work on my car... it's not that close to the yellow stripes... it's a regular road. That red box is about how much my car sticks out into the sidewalk when i'm parked in the driveway. There's no chance i'm getting under that car while it's jacked on a hill... i just wouldn't feel safe. You had said about not washing or repairing a vehicle on a highway... but this is on a residential street. If the books say "highway" and if I were to get a ticket for working on my car on my street, would I have a chance in court?

yes your street is considered a public highway. If you do get a ticket, go to court and plead your case.
