Need Options for what to do with my stock open (non-vlsd) rear.
Ive seen vlsd kits for $1300 and there is always welding the rear. im trying to see if there are any other swaps i can do to handle more torque?

Any VLSD is garbage, had one before, not worth it. If you're gonna drift and dont have money for a 2-way, Weld it. Can't beat the performance for the price. If you have the cash, I recommend a a proper 2-way. I don't think the helicals are great for drifting, they may do good at first and last longer than a VLSD but that much stress will eventually damage it.
If you're not gonna drift and just want something better for the street then I recommend an S15 Helical.

240sx 5.0L? reading that right...because that sounds fun. Yea I guess it depends on your plans for the car and what kind of power you got. Even the stock one welded takes a beating.

If your drifting and on a budget welding is def the way to go. Just make sure you get it done properly.

Just drop the diff, open it up, take it somewhere/someone with a good welder/experience and have them weld the spider gears. You could even cut a piece of sheet metal to fit in between the gears to weld in too.
You'll only notice the difference while sliding/spinning the tires and slow speed turns. But how much power are you looking at for the diff to handle?

If you're looking for a differential capable of handling more power than 450-500 then your best bet is probably to switch to a Q45 Differential.
Q45 Diff bolts into an S13/S14 Subframe without modification, the only thing you'll need to do to mount it is swap the cover to the appropriate one for your subframe (S13/S14). From there you'll need to drill a new hole patten on the input flange (to match the input flange on the factory diff and driveshaft), acquire some Z32 TT rear hubs, and then source one Z32 and one Q45 Axle (can't remember which ones).
Once you install all of that you'll have both a larger stronger diff as well as 31 spline axles vs the factory 28 spline axles. Q45 is great for High Horsepower cars because it's not only stronger but has a lower rear end gear than stock which'll help you be able to use 1st gear.
That's also assuming you're looking for a "Stronger" rear end.

VLSD's are great for the daily/street car that occasionally gets sideways. If youre getting sideways more than youre driving normal, go with a welded.

Agreed. The VLSD is a huge improvement over the open dif for the first couple corners or so but once it heats up forget it. It's too unpredictable if your going to be drifting quite a bit.

A VLSD in good shape is actually pretty sweet.
Otherwise, as they get heat cycled and driven hard they have a tendency to wear out. You can always throw a shim or 2 in them if you've already got one to make it lock better.
Shoot, a double shimmed viscous may as well be a welded.
Just food for thought.

yes good point... Usually when someone is looking at the VLSD it is to save money and the chances of finding a good VLSD aren't all that great. Shimming is an excellent option though.

No doubt that the new shim/thrust washer helps...but the 'negatives' will show their head regardless on an abused/used car this side of street driving :/
*sigh*...I wish we could get a TruTrack or strong mechanical type diff for these cars....the s15's don't cut it, and while I love my 1.5 way (5 years no issues!), it's distracting to a point.

Care to elaborate? Ive been reading up on dif options, and while upgrading my VLSD is a long way off, I always considered the 1.5 way to be the ideal lsd for street and track use. 1.5 way locks only under acceleration, whereas a 2 way locks on downshifts as well right? 2 ways are generally what get squirrelly downshifting on the highway? What drawbacks have you found with the 1.5 way, aside from it being noisy?

If I may interject, a 2 way may as well be a damn welded diff, and if anyone tells you any different go drive both a 2 way and a welded back to back and you'll see what I'm talking about.
2-ways lock on both on throttle and off throttle driving, which essentially means that when the car is in motion the diff will be locked.

Well before I start, I will be the first to say that 1.5 way is certainly (as you described) much more street mannered than a 2 way...however it's still a raunchy mofugga at times out back.
Now don't get me wrong...it dfoesn't make me 'not' want to drive the car...but it's a part of driving that you will undoubtedly need to get used to (and used to driving around if you don't want to deal with it)
Downfall performance wise? None...I'm very glad it unlocks under decel. 'Street car wise'...well it's no worse than my subframe bushings so it may be a push hehe.
I wouldn't EVER take it out...to me it's the best option (and I change oil frequently and always replace the LSD additive...I've found that the Spicer stuff works best at keeping it calm)...but after riding in countless TrueTrac type differentials in domestics, I can say I'd much rather have one...smooth, quiet, and works great.

its a work in progress. something to toy around with on my free time. motor and trans are in and all wiring is hooked up. this summer i should be able to get the drive shaft made and weld up the stock rear for now. that Q45 idea will most likely be my choice being that i have am building a 302 that i will be dropping in later with a blower so ill be passing that 400 horse power range.... you know just a grocery getter lol

Hope you've got a aftermarket block or it won't hang in that power range for long until the lifter valley seperates like the San Andraes Fault line
