Out of town right now but may add more to this thread later...

Basically just pulled the engine to put clutch and k04's on it. You can see the blown k03 in one of the pictures...

Unitronic software.

28's were discussed, but to keep this a more daily vehicle decided to go ko4's. Should still make plenty of power.

Not a fun job...did this once, don't feel like doing it again.

Actually wasn't bad at all I'll do them all day long. Think we had about 8 hours including heads off.

6 speed, I can pull all day everyday. Last time I did Auto, no lift, pulled trans with engine. Terrible when your doing it by yourself.

Swapped in Rs6-K04's, car is unbelievably fun and powerful.

I just did this as well. And now were doing another one with slightly bigger snails. Its not to bad once you learn them a little. Lots of stupid sensors.

Updated pics and trying to decide if we are doing internals now or not.

Props I always heard doing this was a bear of a job. Does the motor come out the bottom or top on those cars? Or does it pull straight out the front.

edit: NVM looks like it pulls out the front. Damn its tight in there.

Normally at the dealer there is a tool to pull them out the bottom. No lift or table available at this location so it came out the front.

just curious why you removed the heads for a simple k04/clutch install? are you installing rods? or something going on with the heads? just wondering, it seems like alot more work than needed, unless there are underlying issues

edit: also i see you left the trans in place? that must have been alot of work. i always remove the trans/motor as a whole and seperate it after its out, makes it alot easier to install as those bell housing bolts arent too fun when its in the car lol! good luck, and enjoy the power!! what clutch, and fueling are you going to be running with this setup?

The bell housing bolts were actually very easy to get to and I think it saved us a bunch of time leaving the transmission in place. We did not need to do any work to it, so we decided to do it that way.

The vehicle has a lot of miles on it. The owner decided we might as well freshen everything up so we don't have to pull the motor again unless we put bigger turbos on it. The heads have upgraded valve springs, valve job, decked, new guides, seals, etc. pretty much 0 miles on them now. No rods at this point but we are going to put new rod bearings, piston rings, and hone. Also did a "gasket-match" type mild port and polish.

Southbend 6 puck clutch will be used. 440cc injectors for now and if we need more fuel we can change those out later. From what I've seen the stock fuel pump should be okay, but if not we will either get RS4 pump or a walboro.

Most everything is ready to get reassembled, but I am not sure how soon I can make the trip out to finish it up as I just found a building to start working out of. I will update this as I get to work on it though.

cool, makes sense, piece of mind is worth alot especially with these cars!! good luck on the build, if you have any questions or whatever let me know as i have done this engine pull about a dozen times on various different years of s4's.

Why would you upgrade valve springs when a K04 dies out before 7k?

If you are going to crack open the block to refreshen everything, you might as well splurge on some IE rods. I'd also skip on the Unitronic tune, and go with either VAST, ASP, or EPL. The injectors you have will be running 130 percent duty cycle, where as the other tuners run EV14's or Siemens 60's with plenty of room to add more fuel.

Just my .02, good luck!

There's no need for rods at this power level - and if we do rods we are doing pistons as well. That cost is above what we are trying to do. I am going with Unitronic because I am a dealer for them and if I need anything done to tweak the file I will have no issues with that. The reason for the springs is because the stock springs were ~ 20lbs. lighter than stock specification and no reason to just put stock back in.

The 440's are to start - if we need to go bigger we can just change the file and swap out bigger injectors. We are also running WMI. We are only running RS4 turbo's not rs6 or any type of hybrid K04 and this is the setup they recommend. I appreciate the input, but this isn't my first time either. If I run into anything weird I won't be afraid to ask for input on here though - didn't know there were so many S4's out here!

i sure hope the stock fuel pump will be enough, but i guess it depends on the tune really, good luck!!
