I'm going to work on a self portrait tonight, what are your recommendations? shutter speed? f-stop?

can be anything you want as long as you know how to sit still.

First suggestion: Find a different spot without a light and half a wall/picture in the background.

you're underexposed as well. i would set the camera to aperture priority for now. set it at f8 and see what shutter speed that gives you. then try it out. turn yourself around so the light is in front of you, not behind you. also spot meter on your face so you get a better exposure.

Yes the background draws your eye away from the actual Pic.
