I would go with something like this. the 2.5rs has a nice strong built motor that will last all the way up to 200,000 miles. Its all wheel drive for when it snows. And subaru is one of the highest safe cars you can drive. i just found this one really quick

Why not just get a last generation civic? You could get one with 50k miles for that much. My ex girlfriend from school has a Grand Am, don't know anything about it, but I know it was the 'sporty' one. Anyway, I thought it was a POS.

I wouldn't go more than 7k. They are really good cars, not many people on a mostly import oriented site are gonna tell you that. I love my gtp. My fiance actually drives it but its an awesome car. Kbb says mines worth 14k which is pretty good reslae for a 5 year old car. My buddy has an 05 grand am and has a lot of problems with the security system not reading the key. He had exactly the same issues with his 01 GA too. I'm not sure if its common or not, but I've actually seen it a few times with these. Might wanna look into that before you buy cause I know its a fairly expensive fix.

I was going to say Legacy. We have both a Legacy and a 2001 2.5 RS Sedan btw and the RS has 224k miles. The Legacy is 2003 has 38k miles and a powertrain warranty still. I drive back and forth from NJ every day and get pretty good gas mileage. Retail for them is about $9k-$10k (last time I checked). I've also never had an issue, but it also pays to have a mechanic boyfriend.

The RS marks our 3rd Subaru and I <3 them.
