Need help, honda people...

ok, So my GF has a 2001 honda civic

The cluster is all sorts of ****ed lololol.
or so I think.

The speedometer sits somewhere around 100 or more at idle and goes up from there and she thinks the gas guage is possibly messed up, as well.


Im thinking its either cluster or speedsensor?

so, are these hard to find, cheap, etc.?

Any help will be appreciated, and please let me know if you have any of these parts for cheap or where I can find them..



Also, if anyone has a stock exhaust sitting around, let me know too. She bought it with some dumb huge muffler on it, luckly it isnt too lound/raspy... Ill double check what engine it is later.

About a year or so ago in my Ranger my temp gauge was constantly going towards the hot side. I did everything I could to see if it would go away. Nothing I did worked. I replaced the tstat, radiator, all the lines. It was still doing it. Ended up replacing the gauge cluster, problem went away. Not saying thats what you're problem is, but its a possibility. Good luck figuring it all out.

Is it an electronic speed sensor or a cable? I would assume its electronic. Start by looking in the FSM for what the voltage the sensor should be putting out. Use a voltmeter and see if its putting out the right amount. If it is, Id try swapping in another cluster to see if that fixes it. If it isnt, Id replace the vss. The gas gauge is probably unrelated, but it could be the whole cluster taking a dump. Start with diagnosing and fixing the speed sensor, then worry about the gas gauge.

IIRC, i was able to find a speed sensor for my integra (also electric) on the forums for around $90. I think theyre something like $170 from Honda. A gauge cluster shouldnt cost you too much, but theres almost no aftermarket following for the 01-05 civics because they sucked, so parts may be harder to come by than older Hondas (Integra clusters go for $40-80 used, I'd guess you could find one for the civic for around or under $100). Neither part should be too terribly hard to find- id do some browsing before I committed to a purchase. Theyre also both pretty easy to install, at least they were on my integra.

thanks, sounds good to me. No aftermarket needed, it just needs it to pass inspection in NJ. If we find a cheap truck she is probably getting that instead soon.

its electric speed sensore that goes into the top of the trans...i had that problem once
